So I know a lot of us know one another, but some of know others beter than some, so I thought in an attempt to keep the great spirit of this board up I'd start this thread to discuss anything we consider a 'favourite' thing about wrestling. Something when we're bored and on our pown on the boards we can just leave a little reply, or a thought of our own. And I mean ANYTHING, favourite entrance music, favourite wrestlers, favourite shows, favourite merchandise, fabourite accessories, favourite autobiographies, favourite backstage tales and rumours. After all, whether we liked the same periods, we all at some point enjoyed this sport. And it could get some of us learning stuff, and could really go in interesting directions.
I'll go first with a few obvious things that spring to mind.
The guy I consider my greatest Wrestler of All Time is Shawn Michaels, I'll no doubt expand on that over the course of this thread if it expands, but that gives a nice intro to my style of wrestling and entertainment.
Interesting rumour I read the other day, and had never heard before, is that apparently the reason Macho Man left the WWE and never actually returned was because he did something that Vince found unforgivable. The rumour states, and in case of any legal implications (God knows whats monitored nowadays, and who monitors it, they stole our PPV Name and placed it in the same month for gawds sake!) I have no idea if it's true, that Mr Savage had an inappropriate relationship with a 17 year old member of the McMahon family who went on to marry one of the company's biggest stars. I was very surprised I hadn't heard it, and apologies if you all knew, and got bored.
And finally I can remember when I first got into Wrestling. Growing up in the UK, when I was 8 we got Sky TV, the UK's first ever equivalent to what you would call cable. It was 1991, I lived in a house that was heated by a log fire, but we had this gateway into a new entertainment world. To imagine the scope of this in previous to this the UK only had 4 TV Channels, the fourth was as old as I at the time having been launched a month before my birth in 1982.
So this was a huge step forward in terms of entertainment for our country. It took off and was a great success. It initiallywas only another 6-7 channels I think, but the problem was the UK did not have enough people to instantly transfer their skills to TV making, so much of the programming on Sky was bought in from the USA. This is a big reason in the UK many American shows are very popular and we're quite well versed in much of your culture.
Anyway, my dad gets the satellite dish installed and we're watching TV on the first night, and he's flicking through the channels, I can't remember any thing else he put on, but I vividly remember him switching to one channel and seeing a man dressed as a dragon walk into an arena with a huge crowd and he blew fire, my dad made light of this (wrestling had long since died in the uK as a mass interested sport, it had a revival a little after, the WWF at least)and changed the channel, I begged him to switch it back. And then my love was born.
The first PPV I was aware of was Summerslam 1991 when Ultimate Warrior and Hogan teamed up Against Slaughter THe Sheik and the other one. I saw the promo's leading up to it, but we didn't have the sports package, so I couldn't watch the show (Wouldn't have been able to anyway given the time difference PPV's finish between 3am-4am on a monday morning over here.), and this was well before the internet entered my life, so I had to wait til the next episode of superstars for that. And then began a routine of watching Cops before the wrestling came on.
I remember listening to Summerslam 1992 when it was in London in my grandparents dining room on a scrambled feeed (if you didn't subscribe to sports. you got audio but no visual).
And the first PPV I ever watched within 24 hours (I'd watch the UK Prime time replay) when my father pretended he was disconecting the annoying scramble and he actually had subscribed and was changing the card you had to purchase, and that was The Royal Rumble 1993 when Giant Gonzalez interrupted and eliminated the Undertaker.
I'm sorry if this bored anyone, but wrestling memories are something I like discussing and feels it's one thing we will all have in common. Sorry if too long, but if enjoyed and this thread becomes fairly active I may share more.
