Place: Wrestlestock South Parking Lot, James' Camper Van
Date/Time: Sat. July 16, 2022, 4:30PM
I don't know how Rae manages to read our minds. She did it, I don't fucking believe it but she did it. She brought along a few pop tents so we can sits under. We circle all our vehicles near James as he is the outmost spot in the Southern Parking lot. Cody and Elf set up 4 tents so we can all sit around, under the sun and not be hot. It's about 4:30PM at night, close to dinner but we already had ours. at 4 so we can spend the rest of the night and do what we want. I lost my match against Pierce so technically this is MY last day here at Wrestlestock. Yeah, I'll leave tomorrow. Anyway, good ole Rae got the tents out. By a sudden whim of mine, I get out my bass guitar, hook it to an electric cord then hook it to James' van. I bring with me everywhere I go. In case a sudden whim or inspiration hits me. I have been known to rock out backstage during shows. I start playing and almost immediately get cut off. I look up and over. Lizzie has unplugged me from the van and is currently plugging me into an electic generator. She tries a few times but can't seem to start it.
"Where in all the blue hells of buddha did you get that?" I ask her.
"Whenever Cassie and I go van camping, we always take a generator. She likes her comforts, I like my electricity." Elf was never one for being a clean freak. She has beautiful red hair but she rarely washes it or combs it instead opting for dreads. When she isn't out partying, drinking or working, you can find her at home lounging around in camo pants and a white T shirt. I start up again when Bill gets the generator started. I strum a few notes of Stairway to heaven. Then go right into Tears in Heaven.
"Would you know my name.
If I saw you in heaven.
Would it be the same.
If I saw you in heaven."
I continue strumming. From somewhere, Cody gets his electric guitar. Lizzie sits on a stool behind me and with her drumsticks, just starts tapping out a beat on whatever is closest. Rae sits beside Cody and lays a head on her shoulder. Jamie sits on the edge of the camper van and watches us. She actually likes singing so she joins us. Bill does the same. He brought his keyboard but this isn't practice.
"Would you hold my hand?
If I saw you in heaven
Would you help me stand?
If I saw you in heaven."
"All right. I guess I'm warmed up. Hit it." I say and immediately Elf goes into a song of our making, Mourner's Masquerade. Jamie loves this one so much, she has actually cried over it. I look over at her and smile and I see tears already welling in her eyes. Cassie sits on the other side of her and puts an arm around her.
"Dry tears fall down dry cheeks
Hush falls as all try to listen
The preacher preaches
And the speeches are said
The widow hides behind the lace veil
Seeing all and at the same time
Seeing nothing
The deceased lies behind
While memories of him
Float around in the air
Until a mourner catches one
And moans of grief are wailed
All over again
The widow hides behind the lace veil
Seeing all and at the same time
Seeing nothing."
"Fuck this!" Nightelf shouts. We all stop. "Let's go hard!!!!" and she belts out the tune from Metallica's Enter Sandman
"Say your prayers, little one, don't forget, my son
To include everyone
I tuck you in, warm within, keep you free from sin
'Til the Sandman, he comes"
Lizzie turns up the volume some and by now we have a few new neighbors coming over to watch us. One guy actually brings over his guitar and joins us.
"Sleep with one eye open
Gripping your pillow tight
Exit light
Enter night
Take my hand
We're off to never-never land"
"OH FUCK me!" lizzie yells and runs off. Returning a few moments later with her entire drum kit, followed by Gail Kim carrying the rest of her drums. As we continue she sets up.
"Something's wrong, shut the light, heavy thoughts tonight
And they aren't of Snow White
Dreams of war, dreams of liars, dreams of dragons' fire
And of things that will bite, yeah
Sleep with one eye open
Gripping your pillow tight
Exit light
Enter night
Take my hand
We're off to never-never land"
By this time, she has hooked up her drum, plugged it in to another generator Bill went and got for her, and she has joined up beating out the rhythem rather vapidly. (yes I said it). Meanwhile, as we continue, a few more people come to join us. Another guy has a guitar. A woman has a tamborine. Another woman has bongo drums. Not a fan of bongo drum but whatever works ya know. By now a crowd of about 20 people are milling about watching this impromptu concert in the South Parking Lot. Cody shouts out "Change. Who knows this one?" And he starts
"Midnight, gettin' uptight, where are you?
You said you'd meet me, now it's quarter to two
I know I'm hangin' but I'm still wantin' you
Hey Jack, it's a fact they're talkin' in town
I turn my back and you're messin' around
I'm not getting jealous, don't like lookin' like a clown"
Gotta love anything by Joan Jett. I know I do. Here and Stevie Nicks are my idols.
"I think of you every night and day
You took my heart, and you took my pride away
I hate myself for loving you
Can't break free from the the things that you do
I wanna walk but I run back to you
That's why I hate myself for loving you"
I shout out. Wait! everyone stops.
"There is a dark empty space residing within
Hollow enough to house a place
For someone there on in
It’s crying, my soul
It can’t really feel
While on this deep dark knoll
Or chained behind bars of steel
My soul can’t really see anybody
So it can’t really say
Why is there nobody
To be with me today
It’s crying, my soul
Its weeping, seeping and sobbing
It’s been taken by a person of a troll
Who’s not really alive and being."
Rae stops singing and I pick up where she left off.
It’s crying, my soul
It can’t really feel
While on this deep dark knoll
Or chained behind bars of steel
It needs to find that someone
Someone to share my life
It needs to be with that one
Who understands my strife"
Then Cody and I go into our guitar solos and rock the fuck out! When we finish, tamborine lady gets up and goes "Do any of you know this one?" and she starts up the beat of "We Will Rock you." Lizzie's eyes light up and she immediately rocks it hard on the drums. Bongo lady tries to keep up but she is nowhere near as good as Elf. When the lyrics come up, we all know them so everyone, even the good 50 or so onlookers just rock out with us.
"Buddy, you're a boy, make a big noise
Playing in the street, gonna be a big man someday
You got mud on your face, you big disgrace
Kicking your can all over the place, singin'
We will, we will rock you
We will, we will rock you
Buddy, you're a young man, hard man
Shouting in the street, gonna take on the world someday
You got blood on your face, you big disgrace
Waving your banner all over the place."
Cassie, Bill and Jamie are stomping inside Jamie's van. Jamie is just banging on the outside of his van. More onlookers come over. A few more people get guitars and other instruments. Someone even brought a violin and can fiddle with the best of them. I'm impressed.
"Buddy, you're an old man, poor man
Pleading with your eyes, gonna get you some peace someday
You got mud on your face, big disgrace
Somebody better put you back into your place, do it!
We will, we will rock you, yeah, yeah, come on
We will, we will rock you, alright, louder!
We will, we will rock you, one more time
We will, we will rock you
Yeah"
We don't even do "We are the Champions." We just go straight in too another original song of ours, which is more instrumental than anything else. No words. Just a lot of drums and bass. Kind of a jam session just between Elf and me. Bongo lady tries. Violin lady tries. Cody just sits back and watches. While we do do this for money and entertaining millions of people, he was always one for "gather them around then they can do whatever the hell they want. If they want to watch, so be it, if they want to jam, even better." This song is hard and fast and it goes back and forth between me and her. We stop for a solo from bongo lady, then for violin lady, then we go back to jamming...
We had several breaks. We had a lot of people watching, a few joining in with various different instruments. At one point there was a digeredoo which sounds awesome whenever you are in the desert. At another point, someone had bagpipes. A few more guitars. Someone else brought their own drum kit and then preceeded to challenge Lizzie to the drum section of "In a gadda vida" by Iron Butterfly. That received a standing ovation. Songs were played like "Running down a dream" by Tom Petty, "Drop Dead Cynical" by Amaranthe, "Clint Eastwood" by Gorillaz, "King Nothing" by Metallica, then we finished everything that night with 'When the Levee Breaks" by Led Zepplin. Sure, Zepplin has other better songs but not one where Lizzie can go wild on and drum to her hearts content. We wind down, the crowd claps, we turn off the generators, we keep the tents up in case any of us want to sleep under the stairs. We thank the crowd and they thank us back. Another good night of rocking out. LOVE IT! I lost my match against Pierce today but I'm damn proud of our performance in the parking lot. Thank you Wrestlestock. I can go home a happy little girl.

"We need to do another one of ours. For those of you who don't know this song, you'll pick it up quick. But here is "My Crying Soul." Elf taps out a 1 2 3 and then beats out the rythem. I start on my bass and Cody joins in. Unbelieveably, a few of the other guitar players, know this song.
Hollow enough to house a place
For someone there on in
