[Hastings looks down at a small envelope, marked ‘A Glimpse of the Future’, he opens it to find a small Newspaper clipping, apparently from the Connecticut Herald, he raises it to his eyes and reads on]
OBITUARIES
Donovan Hastings, best known for his run in the Sports Entertainment company; Global Impact Wrestling during the early years of this Millennia passed away peacefully in his sleep last night, May 30th 2068, at the age of 85, after tripping on his robe and falling down the stairs at his care home, carers revealed.
The ‘Lord’, as he demanded to be referred to during his time in Pro Wrestling, became a household name after joining GIW in 2008, and was well known for his offbeat behaviour which oftentimes bordered on the criminally insane. Hastings spent much of his career focused on his quest for Immortality, which his ultimate failure to achieve, according to the few people close to him, led to a total nervous breakdown when he reached the age of 50. This breakdown led to his eventual blinding at the hands of gang leaders in the Bronx when in the summer of 1958 he entered a neighbourhood in the district, addressing the residents with a much maligned racial insult, and demanding they bow down in front of their ‘Lord’. Moments later he was brutally attacked and had peroxide bleach poured into his eyes. This incident was the tip of the iceberg for a career that was defined by disappointment and defeat.
Donovan was a skilled technical grappler, proficient in many submission arts, whose unfortunate view of reality, and subsequent bizarre actions outside of the ring, lead to the overshadowing of his natural skills. Well known for having in-depth discussions with inanimate objects, such as cardboard cut outs of his peers, Hastings’ was regarded as a figure of light entertainment and comic relief, rather than an athlete with boundless potential and ability.
Donovan’s run in Global Impact Wrestling will be best remembered for his ill fated run as ‘Lord Chief’ of the company. After claiming the title following a dubious victory over well known Human Rights activist Gabrielle Montgomery, who gained international respect on leaving the company when she vigorously campaigned against land mines, the ‘Lord’ went on the most memorable run of his career, defeating Cal Raynor (AKA Dredd) for a shot at GIW’s coveted Unified Global Championship.
Victory over Dredd led to Hastings involvement in a match that ensured professional wrestling fans spanning different generations would always know the name Donovan Hastings. On June 14th 2009, in the Mexico Arena, Mexico City, back in the days when Mexico was a sovereign country not under the rule of today’s modern superpower Estonia, ‘Lord ‘ Donovan Hastings took part in the most high profile match of his entire career, against the legendary Travis Roberts, at the main event of the company’s Break for the Border Pay-Per-View event.
Until this point Hastings career would have been best remembered for embarrassing defeats to the likes of Chris Austin (best remembered for dying whilst trying to felate himself for his weekly YouTube blog) and Referee Owen Peterson (who later became the ‘Lords’ body man and stayed by Hastings’ side loyally until he death in 2027 in a Antelope and Zebra related incident). The match against Travis Roberts presented ‘Lord’ Hastings with a chance to redeem his reputation, and pull off perhaps the biggest upset in Pro-Wrestling history.
Ultimately, as was the pattern for the whole of the ‘Lords’ career, his challenge ended in failure in Mexico City, and resulted in Hastings spiralling further into the depths of insanity. He spent four more years with the company, never again reaching the lofty heights of headlining a Show with Sports Entertainments most successful and important figure.
Despite a career that was defined by failure and embarrassment, Hatsings was able to pass into the afterlife safe in the knowledge he indeed contributed to one of the greatest success stories of our time. Although only a footnote in the history of ‘The Blessed One’ it could be argued that even in that defeat Donovan Hastings had unconventionally succeeded in his quest for Immortality.
