Beep. Beep. Beep.
The only sound Risa can hear is the beeping of her heart monitor. it had stayed regular as long as she was awake. She had no idea bout what it did when she was asleep, but no one had come charging in to drag her to surgery, so she figures that is a good thing. Little bits and pieces of things had trickled to her, mostly through ichiro. She had finally learned that Zane Scott, a curse on him, had what he wanted. He had the World Title and he had put Eden back in the hospital. Exactly how bad things were Risa did not know, and neither does Ichiro. Just one more thing to send her mind rolling at a million miles an hour while she did what she was told and remained in bed. Unable to even roll over or scratch due to her arm.
Curse them all to the deepest Chinese hell I've ever heard of. Devil's Most Wanted. Zane Scott. The Consortium. All of them got what they had wanted. I'm not be sure I can defend the title I have right now. Ichiro brought the belt in for me, but he took it when he left hours ago. He had said he had 'a few things to take care of' with a tone of voice that had sent chills down my spine. I hope he doesn't do anything stupid.
She tries to shift, even a little bit, finally able to move her legs around enough to at least restore circulation somewhat.
Eden. I tried. I really did. I wasn't as strong as you, yet again. I'm so sorry I couldn't prevent this. I couldn't even get you out of that stupid co-op match to let you heal. I know you trust me, and that you don't hold me at fault. I just hope you can find a way to forgive yourself. No one else blames you for a thing. We're all worried about you.
Her right wrist still has the charm tied to it Ichiro had left there. She gives a gentle squeeze to the trio of crystals there, trying to add their prescribed abilities to her own prayer. She takes a deep breath. An itch, one that has persisted for nearly two hours, reminds her it's there. She growls softly, the beeping of the heart monitor increasing tempo a little. Within moments, a nurse's head pops in.
Nurse: "Everything okay in here?"
Risa pouts, looking grumpy and displeased.
SR: "No."
The nurse enters, letting the door close behind her. The woman had to have the patience of an angel to enter that room at that moment.
Nurse: "What's wrong?"
Risa sighs.
SR: "I'm sure you've heard this before, but I am freaking bored. I can only sleep so much. I'm trying to be good and lay here and rest like I have been told, but the only entertainment I have is the beeping of the heart monitor and I've hummed every song I know that is even close to that tempo about a dozen times. And even modified a few to be at that tempo."
The nurse shakes her head.
Nurse: "I know it's frustrating. I'd offer some magazines or a book, but it'd be difficult for you to read."
Risa lifts her head to look at the Nurse before flopping it back to the pillow.
SR: "Still, can't I have some earphones? An ipod maybe? Something loaded with audio books and music. I'd even take an old Sony Walkman tape player and some tapes. This is seriously driving me crazy. And you know what's worse?"
The Nurse is grinning slightly. She knows how lonely this can be, and she seems willing to take the time to play Risa's game.
Nurse: "What's that? That you can't reach over and turn the beeping off?"
Risa moves her head side to side.
SR: "I've had an itch on my...backside...for about two hours. I can't reach around to scratch it because it's on the left side."
The Nurse giggles, flipping her blonde hair back over her shoulder.
Nurse: "I know it's frustrating."
Risa sighs.
SR: "Also, there is a friend here as well, but I can't seem to find out anything about her. Last name Morgan."
The Nurse nods.
Nurse: "She's not in this wing. I'm afraid we'd have to go through Admin to see if she's in the private wing."
Risa sighs again.
SR: "It's okay. Ichiro will eventually hear how she is doing. I just need something. Something to occupy my mind."
The Nurse nods.
SR: "Once we get you moved out of here, and we're just a few hours from that, we'll see about getting you a reading stand and at least some magazines. Maybe your friend can bring you some music to listen to. We'll see. As for that itch, you might be able to scratch it when we get you moved. Not sure how restrictive they will keep your arm."
There's a buzz. The nurse looks at her hip, where a pager vibrated.
Nurse: "I gotta go. You hang in there, ok?"
Risa sighs in exasperation.
SR: "Hai. Not like I have a choice. Thanks for coming by."
The nurse nods and steps back out through the door.
SR: "Great. Here we go again."
With nothing else to do, Risa closes her eyes. When she opens them again, she finds she is not alone. Ichiro is standing next to her, smiling.
I: "Hey there. Good nap?"
SR: "Apparently."
Ichiro nods.
I: "Nurse said you were going stir crazy in here. She wouldn't let me bring you a bowl and a spoon in so you had something else to stir with."
Risa giggles. Her shoulders relaxing a little.
SR: "Yeah. It's been lonely in here."
Ichiro shrugs.
I: "I've seen or heard that others from Outlast ended up in here. Was quite a brutal event. I guess no one else knows you're in here."
Risa snorts.
SR: "Even if they do, they sort of have other priorities at the moment. I assume still nothing from PMN?"
Ichiro shakes his head.
I: "Not yet. I'm sure Mister Pierce and Mister Somers are keeping an eye on her. I haven't seen them so she is not in this part of the Hospital. I asked at the main desk, they said her condition was 'Guarded on a Need to Know Basis'. "
Risa lifts her head to look at him as he answers, but flops back to the pillow again, the only real thing she can do right now, and considers that.
SR: "Doesn't sound good."
I: "No, it doesn't. PMN is a bit delicate right now. Three people used to dealing with things on their own, internalizing everything, just now starting to learn how to trust another, how to let someone be close enough to be a brother or sister. If only it weren't that alliance of Scott and Cypress that caused it."
Risa nods.
SR: "Sometimes, when you are at your lowest, that's when you realize who the people are in your life that you trust the most. The people who care about you. You spend a lot of time thinking about them and not quite understanding why."
Ichiro's watch beeps. He looks at it.
I: "I gotta go. I have to....be somewhere. I left you a gift on your bedside table."
Risa raises her head and watches him go. She turns her head as far as she is able, and her eyes open wide. An arrangement of flowers sits on the table. A delicate looking crystal vase with a dozen roses, half yellow and half red.
SR: "Dang it, ichi-kun, I can't reach the card!"
She shakes her head and laughs.
SR: "That will keep my mind busy, trying to figure out how to get that without hurting myself. Thanks, Ichi-kun. I love puzzles."
Smiling, Risa starts looking around, taking stock of what she has to work with...

Ichiro walks into the hotel. The room they were in was not available, but he had gotten a one bedroom for a good price within the same hotel. He makes his way to his room and goes inside. He stops and looks around a moment. He picks up a half consumed bottle of water and walks over to the desk in the room, where his tablet sits, propped up on a stand. As if on cue the screen lights and the pad beeps. He unlocks it and accepts the incoming call.
I: "I'm sorry to ask you to call me at his hour."
On the screen Risa's Grandfather smiles back.
Grandfather: "Not at all m'boy. It's good that you want to keep in touch with us and keep us in the loop. What is it you needed to talk about."
I: "You remember that spider walk you taught me?"
Grandfather: "Hai."
I: "Is it possible to hold yourself in position with both feet and only one hand?"
Grandfather shrugged.
Grandfather: "Hell if I know. Only way to find out is to try it, I suppose."
Ichiro smiles.
I: "I figured as much. Anyway, let me tell you what is going on and get your input on what my tactics should be..."
Ichiro and Grandfather begin to plot. Every suggestion Grandfather adds only makes Ichiro smile wider....
