Icihro pulls the rented Nissan Cube into a parking space. His bluetooth earpiece glows a cool blue, showing it in use. He puts the shifter into park and leans back in the driver seat. He looks tired, but somewhat at peace.
I: "Yeah. You should have seen his face when he realized his bat was talking to him. Priceless. Anyway, Mister Somers, thank you for calling me back. I will pass everything along to Risa when I find out what room she is in now, and will let you know. She will probably want to come down and see you all if they will let her roam a bit. That'd be okay? Good. I will let her know. Hang in there. We're here for you. Right."
He presses the button on his earpiece and exhales a long, slow sigh. While the call was a load off of his mind, it had laid more bad news on his mind. Something else that would need to be addressed at a future date. But for now, he had to take care of things one at a time. He gets out of the Cube and walks around to the back hatch, popping it. He pulls out a very girly, pink Hello Kitty backpack and slings it over his shoulder. He then closes the hatch and locks the vehicle before moving on. Passing through the doors, he approaches the desk.
I: "Hi. I'm here to see Seito Risa, I got a call earlier she had been settled into a room and out of observation?"
The nurse sighs.
Nurse: "Spell that for me."
I: "S-e-i-t-o"
The nurse types it into the system and waits. Her lids begin to droop. She nods.
Nurse: "She's in a regular room now."
The Nurse raises her hand and one of the candy-stripers nearby rushes over. The Nurse mumbles to the overly cheerful looking brunette and then gives a wave of dismissal. The girl comes chugging around the desk and up to Ichiro.
Candy-striper: "Hi-eeee! I'm Monica! If you'll follow me, I'll take you to your friend!"
I would advise her to switch to decaf, but she has to be too young for a coffee habit. Reminds me of Risa after a chocolate milkshake.
Ichiro nods, hitching up the backpack. As they walk the girl carries on.
Monica: "I noticed that backpack. Adorable! Where did you get that? My little sister would love one."
Ichiro had to think a moment.
I: "Actually I'm not sure exactly what store she bought it in. She got it in Tokyo."
Monica leads him to an elevator where she pushes the button and turns, way too bright eyed.
Monica: "Tokyo? You've been there?"
Ichiro shrugs.
I: "We grew up in Osaka. Once a month we'd go into Tokyo and just make a day of it. On one of those trips she hauled this thing out on the way home on the train and proceeded to pull I forget how much pocky out of it."
Monica giggles.
Monica: "Yep, sounds like my little sister. You know she is so..."
The elevator dings, the pair get in, the girl still chattering away. Finally the elevator deposits them on their floor, Monica still jabbering.
Monica: "But when she asked about Hello Kitty toilet paper I had to tell mom to draw the line. I can't wipe on something that is staring at me all the while!"
Ichiro grins at this.
I: "A perfectly reasonable approach. I don't think I could either."
Monica: "I know, right?"
She leads him to the floor nurses station and lets the duty nurse know about him. The duty nurse waves them on. The corridor is wider and brighter than the ICU Observation corridor had been.
Monica: "So anyway, if you find out from her where she got that backpack, please let me know. I'll see if I can get it from them online."
Ichiro nods, once again shrugging the pack back up on his shoulder.
I: "I will see if she remembers."
Monica leads him to a door and knocks.
SR: "Please, no more lime jell-o. Otherwise come on in."
Monica opens the door and steps through.
Monica: "You got a visitor!"
Risa perks up. She sits on the bed, her arm finally at least slung from her own body and not the ceiling. Somewhere along the way she appears to have found some mint-green pajamas. Monica steps aside and lets Ichiro pass through.
SR: "Ichi-kun!"
Ichiro blinks at her, smiling broadly.
Monica: "Visiting hours are good for another three hours. Remember to stop by the nurse out front on this floor on the way out. Kay?"
Still sporting a smile brighter than the lighting in the hallway, Monica exits. Ichiro watches her go, then turns back to Risa.
I: "They need to check her blood sugars. She's on a rush of some kind."
Risa giggles and turns, sitting up, feet dangling from the edge of the bed, about an inch off the ground.
SR: "So how'd it go?"
Ichiro takes the backpack from his shoulder and walks over, handing it to an eager Risa.
I: "Went well. Your Grandfather's advice proved to be, as always, precise. And..."
He opens the jacket of his trademark grey suit and pulls out an envelope.
I: "I also intercepted the bounty money."
Risa blinks.
SR: "Bounty?"
Ichiro pauses for a moment.
That's right...I didn't tell her yet..
I: "Ooley told me someone had put a bounty on you for Outlast, to get rid of you. For good."
Risa smirks.
SR: "Well, obviously that will have failed. But I assume the bounty was paid since I'll be out for a couple of weeks at least?"
Ichiro nodded.
I: "The nice thing is the bounty was paid in cash. One-hundred-thousand."
Risa's eyes go wide. She stares at the envelope in Ichiro's hand.
SR: "Wow. Am I really that big a pain in the ass?"
Ichiro shakes his head.
I: "No, but this person apparently feels you are."
SR: "That'd be Ooley, no doubt. Damned Consortium."
Ichiro nodded.
I: "Your instinct is flawless. However we have an issue still to address. What to do with this?"
Risa eyes the envelope.
SR: "If you are thinking what I'm thinking you already know what I'm thinking."
Ichiro nods, sliding the envelope back into his jacket.
I: "Mister Somers gave me a call while I was on the way here. I am going to meet with him for a quick moment before I leave. I will give it to him then to help PMN get back on their feet. He will appreciate the irony I am sure."
Risa grins. She finally takes the backpack and sets it on the bed, using her good right hand to fidget with the zipper.
I: "Risa-kun? Where's your charm?"
Risa turns and looks at Ichiro, then blinks.
SR: "Oh! One of the nurses helped me put it around my neck when they moved me."
She pulls the collar of the pajama shirt down, showing the charm hanging in her less than substantial cleavage.
SR: "See?"
Ichiro nods.
I: "Good. As long as it is with you."
Risa smiles as she finally gets the main compartment of the backpack unzipped.
SR: "It's been on me since you tied it on my wrist."
Ichiro walks over and starts to unzip the other compartments on the backpack while Risa, having pulled a tablet from the bag, fires it up.
SR: "I bet I have a dozen emails waiting. Probably mostly from Mom."
Ichiro nods as he unzips the last of the four zippers.
I: "Likely so, but I have been in contact with both your Mother and Grandfather regularly, I have kept them up to date on everything."
Risa looks up at him.
SR: "Awww, you never let me have any fun!"
She whines, then laughs. Ichiro looks at her a moment, shakes his head, and joins her in the laugh.
I: "It is good to see you joking again, Risa-kun."
She smiles brightly at him as the tablet loads up.
SR: "Thanks to you, Ichi-kun."
I: "Did you manage to get the card from the roses?"
Risa navigates the tablet with her right hand, opening her email program.
SR: "Hai. Wasn't easy. But I did manage it. The flowers are over there."
Ichiro turns, finally seeing the small tray table atop which sits the flowers and vase he painstakingly hunted down for her. He smiles.
I: "Well, I hope it helped."
Risa looks up at him as her email loads.
SR: "I would say you have no idea how much, but likely you do."
Ichiro smiles.
SR: "Eleven emails. Ten are Mom, all just checking in and saying a prayer. This other one, looks like spam."
She puts the tablet to sleep and tosses it onto the bed.
SR: "So how's Eden?"
Ichiro takes a deep breath and pulls over a chair. He sits down, looking at Risa the entire time, explaining everything....
I: "Yeah. You should have seen his face when he realized his bat was talking to him. Priceless. Anyway, Mister Somers, thank you for calling me back.
