The Dragon. Is he setting himself up for a Fall?
Whatever happened to the Dragon, Alex Kiseragi? Any of the increasingly high number of Global Impact Wrestling fans around the world should know what I mean by this. Of course he hasn’t actually gone anywhere, quite the opposite in fact, it seems hard to turn your head without seeing him somewhere. I’m finding it hard to drive to work or open a magazine without being visually assailed by the man in his unashamedly metro sexual underwear.
No, the question I’m asking is what happened to the old Alex Kiseragi? What happened to the man who burst onto the scene a few months ago after In Your Hands in that wild Triple Threat Table match on Sentinel? What happened to the man who seemed to want to come out and throw himself around and compete for the fun of competing and the entertainment of us, the Wrestling Fans?
Now I know this is still going to confuse some of you. Indeed on the face of it, to the untrained or blindly turned eye the man who fought that tables match is the very same as the one who fought to the frankly inevitable victory alongside Hardcore Champion Randy Boolzian on last weeks show. But to the more trained or willing eye it is clear that is not the case. Even from his entrance last week, so busy was he taking that same damn ridiculous pose I’ve been forced to look upon so often in recent days that he almost managed to forget the trademark trio of kicks that have made his appearance so exciting. I hate to think what Ray and Mike, apparently the guys backstage responsible for the accompanying pyros were thinking at the idea of being so thoroughly forgotten by a man who made such a point of publicly thanking them for doing so mere weeks ago.
There’s one simple answer to this, or at least on the surface anyway, three words, Global Heavyweight Title. It’s not entirely surprising really. Anyone who has reached that kind of peak in their industry, the top title of possibly the most prestigious company in the country, if not the world could be forgiven for allowing themselves a slight ego stroke. However, I think we as wrestling fans could be forgiven for expecting more integrity from our Champions, especially those who have had our support getting to that point.
Word from backstage sources though indicates that the title may not be directly responsible for any observed changes. Apparently after his victory at Distant Whispers, GIW management assigned one of their top agents to Kiseragi personally in an attempt to open him up to global market in the same way they attempted to with former Champion Travis Roberts. Along with such events as the aforementioned Pay Per View event taking place in London, England and rumours of a World Tour planned towards the end of the year it seem GIW is serious about attempts to break out from the west coast and from American shores in all with the companies Champions being forced into the forefront positions of their marketing campaigns.
What has to be considered though is the average shelf life of a Global Heavyweight Champion is Global Impact Wrestling. If Alex Kiseragi were to successfully defend the title at the upcoming Horizons Pay Per View he would join the elite group of wrestlers who have actually made a successful defence of the Heavyweight title, a group currently consistent only of two time world Champion Brandon Brown and controversial Japanese superstar Komosube.
That in mind, could The Dragon’s time in the spotlight be mere weeks from running out? The odds are certainly stacked against him, especially considering one of his challengers is Hardcore Champion Randy Boolzian, a man still undefeated within the company and who Kiseragi himself has lost to on more than a single occasion.
The question then is; Is Alex Kiseragi setting himself up, or being set up for, a painful fall? Law of averages says so and once he’s fallen back down amongst us, the little people, you’ve got to wonder, how many will be left to pick him back up?
I for one am not sure. How about you?

Alex sat in the back seat of a chauffeur Bentley Continental, hidden behind the unfurled pages of the days paper. The car pulls up outside a swanky looking apartment complex and the door opens, Vince Hawk climbing in and sitting down beside him, unacknowledged by our Champion.
“What’re you reading?” the agent asked.
Alex peered narrowly over the top of the pages. “The newspaper.” he replied, slowly, unnecessarily elongating the word and looking at his company as if he’d just asked the most ridiculous question on Earth.
“Not that damn Strauss article? I was hoping I could keep that off your radar.”
Alex closed the newspaper and let is scrunch up in his lap. “Am I a sell out?”
“No!” Vince almost shouted, recoiling as if horrified by the entire concept. “You’re a Champion. You’re a celebrity. You’re Hollywood baby! Say it with me…”
Alex fixed him with a humourless glare which quickly calmed the agents moment of over enthusiasm. Vince let out a quick cough and reached over, snatching the newspaper away. “Don’t let this chump get to you. Besides, it’s tomorrows fish and chip paper.”
“What?”
“Sorry, it’s a British thing.”
“What do you know about Britain?”
“More than the average American apparently.”
“I seee.” Alex squinted before turning away to look out the window.
“So yeah, we’ve got an autograph signing this morning, then we’re gonna hit the gym. Big match this week.”
“If you say so…” Alex replied, uninterested, still looking out of the window.
“Hey I’m all for playing it cool Champ but you’re going up against Boolz and T-Rob, it’s gonna be a challenge.”
“You’re forgetting something.”
“What’s that?”
“They hate each other.” Alex said, finally turning back. “They hated each other even before Boolz stole Travis’s sink and started banging his wife. There’s no way they’re going to be able to coexist. I’ll probably be able to sit back, wait for any façade of teamwork to break down, watch them beat each other down then jump in for an easy pin.”
“Or Aragato could.”
“Yeah or him.” Alex said, rolling his head back and looking away out of the window again.
…how many will be left to pick him back up?
