APR 15
The match hadn’t had the ending he hoped for, but it did end with him standing tall in the ring with Zane and Vain. And followed by the announcement that he would be an option for the World Title match at In Your Hands. He could be riding on a proverbial high after assisting Alan in tossing Trent Steel from the ring if it wasn’t for that human dumpster fire being announced as another option. Ezra had laid down a challenge to the ‘Son of a Bitch’ and he had seemingly answered almost immediately. Or was he only there to attack Alan and he didn’t care about Ezra?
SLAM!!
The sound of the door hitting the wall as it opened reverberated off the walls of his locker room as he entered and set the Chaos Title down on the bench before pacing around the room. He’d had some hurt feelings as of late and it had to do with one of the men he shared the ring with after his match. Zane had excluded him from a list of names although that wasn’t the sole reason he was upset. Zane had included JC on that list even though he’d held the belt less while also defending it less. Frankly, Ezra had gotten all up inside his own head about it.
After talking some bullshit for a couple of weeks about it, Zane still felt it in his heart to rescue him from an attack. Or maybe he was just saving Vain? It felt good to stand tall in the ring after getting blasted in the face by the one belt in UGWC he hasn’t won yet. If it’d only been a few weeks earlier, the picture UGWC’s top single champs sharing the ring would’ve probably gone viral on the internets.
“Trent fuckin’ Steel. This guy loses AGAIN and still gets a possible title shot. Failing upwards AGAIN.” He suddenly picks up the Chaos Title and almost throws it but stops himself at the last second. He grips the belt with both hands and sets it back down, almost reverently. “Almost lost myself there for a moment. Honestly, I’m trying to be better than that.”
“This place just seems backwards to me right now. I lost a bunch of matches and I still had to scratch and claw my way back up the hill, bro. All of you have seen my journey. I went from the ‘Bro With Two Belts’ to absolutely nothing in a matter of months.” Ezra pauses to scratch at his beard a bit and maintain his calmer tone. “Trent Steel hasn’t done anything of note since arriving EXCEPT threaten to burn UGWC to the ground. And he gets rewarded time and time again. He eked out a few victories here and there. Again, nothing noteworthy. And now we’re essentially on the same level, just like at Infinity when our paths first crossed, my dude.”
He looks over at the Chaos Championship and pats the center plate as he sits back down.
“I started 2024 with a specific set of goals in mind. One, do better in the Global Challenge than last year. Two, win at Infinity so I can get my pick of which title shot I wanted. Three, win the Chaos Championship. So far, I’ve accomplished what I wanted to do this year. If I didn’t give a fuck, I could vacate this belt on Synergy and be fine with it. But I do give a fuck. Which means that I’m setting a new goal for this year, bro.”
Ezra stares into the camera with malice in his eyes.
“I’m going to rid this place of Trent Steel… or die trying.”
“The last time Travis Roberts and myself set to square off with each other, he talked a lot about losing. But it wasn’t in a pessimistic tone. It was almost poetic. He spoke about how if he hadn’t lost at Infinity then our match would’ve meant much more. How his ‘triumphant return’ was dashed by A Boy Named Jess.”
Ezra sits in his living room on his couch. In front of him is a coffee table with the typical stoner stuff scattered on top. A tray meant for rolling joints. A few pipes. A couple jars of green leafy stuff. Ezra is currently rolling a joint as he chats to the camera.
“To be honest, it meant more than you think, my dude. You shouldn’t have felt disappointed FOR me, Travis. The disappointment was solely mine to bear, bro. It was the epitome of an off night for me that night. Something that made John Blade look like a superstar. We all have those bad nights though. I can promise you something though, Mr. Roberts. Our next encounter won’t be as much of a walk in the park for you.”
He pauses as he finishes rolling the joint and adding it to a small pile then begins rolling another.
“And while the disappointment was mine, so was the pleasure, bro. I’ve talked a lot about the Old Guard of UGWC. The guys who helped shape this place. Guys who ran amuck around here before, during, and after my dear old mentor was here. And you’re amongst them, good sir. I was beyond stoked when that match was made and it was an honor once again to get another crack at one of the founding fathers of this organization, bro.”
Ezra looks up as the door opens and Nora walks in. She drops her purse off on the kitchen table before walking over and giving him a kiss on the cheek.
“Whatcha doin?” she says, sitting down next to him.
“Rollin’ doobies. Talking about Synergy,” he replies before returning the favor and giving her a kiss on the cheek.
“Well, don’t take too long. We’re going to dinner with your mom later.”
Nora scurries off down the hallway as Ezra goes back to rolling the doobies.
“Some people, like Trent Steel or JC, would probably see my praise towards others as pandering or a waste of time. And I fully disagree with that sentiment. You have to know where you come from to get where you want to go. It’s important to know the history of a place whether you want to burn it down or raise it up. There’s nothing negative associated with me wanting to beat another legend. I’m not trying to be a Legend Killer or anything like that but the more legends I beat in this place, the more my own legend will grow.”
Ezra sets another joint aside and leans back on the couch.
“Unlike last week, this isn’t a must-win scenario for me. I mean, beating Travis would be a major personal accomplishment. But losing to him isn’t going to change the fans’ minds about me. It’s not a title match. There isn’t much on the line for me here. It doesn’t mean I’m going to approach it any differently than any other match though. I’m coming to fight. It’s slightly different for you though, Trav. Beating Travis Roberts should mean something and to me it does. BUT… maybe not to the fans or to yourself. You beat me once and you need to prove that Travis Roberts is beyond flukes. You need to prove that you have what it takes to stay in this game after so many years inside of it. Unfortunately for you, that’s not going to start by beating Ezra Wolf a second time, my dude. May the best budsmoker win.”
Ezra shoots a wink at the camera before getting back to his feet. He turns down the hall that we Nora go down as the scene fades.
