"You think this is the last time?"
Phrixus glanced up at his long time partner.
"What do you mean?"
"Is Horizons going to be the last time that the two of us team together?"
"You mean, do I think we're going to lose?"
"I guess, yeah."
"Alan, if you and I can't beat these two, we don't deserve to team together. These are two puppets, tools of a user, unable to make decisions or think for themselves. You and I fight the makers, the puppet masters."
"I guess my question really is, have we two, you and I, grown so old and inflexible that we have outlived our usefulness?"
"In this industry, old friend, you have to be able to reinvent yourself, keep yourself fresh. You and I live on the fringe. Don't forget what we've done together."
After a moment, the Talk nodded his head.
December 2
I tell Alan not to forget what we've done together. The truth is I don't forget what we've done apart.
It is true that together, we have been a legendary cooperative team, having held many team championships together.
It is also true that Alan's two world championships occured with me at his side. I celebrated with him when he won the Lord of the Ring Tournament. I was on his team the night he won the World Championship at Outlast. I was always there.
Ultimately, it is also true that while all of Alan's personal success came with my support, none of my own personal success came with his. In fact, when I was setting records and making history as the Cross-Hemisphere Champion, my first defense saw me defeat him, with no holds barred. My last successful defense was over him as well, that time in an Iron Man Match.
When I won the Lord of the Ring tournament myself, Alan was nowhere to be found.
When I won my first World Championship, he was first in line to try to take it from me.
And when I conquered a demon and won the UGWC World Championship, he came out of the woodwork.
Alan Fernandez has been a brother. He has been a nemesis. He has been a constant, an alpha and an omega. We shall go on, together.
To whatever end.
They stood together, mere steps away from the curtain, awaiting their cue.
"Hey," said the Talk, his hand on the shoulder of the Embodiment of Fear.
Phrixus glanced back at him.
"I love you."
Their hands clasped, and they pulled each other close, each embracing with a single arm.
"Freaks are still cool."
Phrixus patted his old friend on the back, as their music hit, and they stepped through the curtain together.
Perhaps for the last time.
