‘Vain’ exits the ‘Elite Establishment’, and walks over towards a bench that is situated under a couple of small dogwood trees. Taking a seat, he grabs his cell phone from his inside jacket pocket, and takes a look at his missed call log. He hits a number, and then leans back in his seat, situating his half of the UGWC Cooperative Championship belt in the process.
He sits in silence for a very short time, not saying a word until his phone call is answered.
“’The Vain One’ saw that you called, Jase. Hasn’t ‘Mr. Ego’ told you numerous times that he isn’t a mind reader, and that in order for you to get your point across as to the reasoning behind the phone call, you must leave a message?”
Vain listens to the response, as he seductively smiles at a late-twenties brunette that is walking past him. The brunette blushes and giggles, and continues on her way. Vain focuses back on the conversation.
“Hastings and I just finished meeting with him.”
Vain listens in at what Jason Ingalls has to say.
“Vain has no clue where Remi ran off to. More than likely he found a female companion.”
Again, Vain listens in at the response from Jason Ingalls.
“Dirge was…different, tonight.”
Vain blows a kiss at a beautiful redhead that saunters by. She, in turn, blows him one back, as she continues on into the restaurant.”
“’Arrogance Personified’ isn’t exactly sure what is up with Dirge, to be perfectly honest with you, Jase. Vain imagines that it has something to do with what transpired last week at Synergy.”
Vain straightens his tie as he listens in.
“More than likely it had to do with the decision that Dirge was forced to make last week. Colin has no one to blame but himself for what happened though. Dirge is an extremely reasonable man…and he gave Colin every opportunity to make things right. Unfortunately…Mr. Zale decided to make things difficult, and he was forced to suffer the consequences of those actions. Maybe next time he will put more thought into his response…and lead less with his ego.”
Vain nods his head at the words that he is hearing.
“Yes, Vain is getting ready to head to the airport now. I should be home in time for the taping.”
Jason Ingalls says one last thing, as Vain stands and begins walking towards a jet black Bentley.
“No, Vain told the regular driver that he could go home…handsomely paid, obviously. Vain had other transportation planned, however. I will speak to you in Miami.”
Vain presses ‘End’ on his phone, and places it back into his jacket pocket. Opening the door, he speaks as he takes his place in the passenger seat.
“You are looking lovely as always, Nicole. Vain thoroughly appreciates you picking him up.”
The door closes, and the car takes off towards the airport.
------------------------
“Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to another much anticipated edition of ‘The Vain Vault!”
The camera pans in on Vain, as he is seated behind his desk, on the set of ‘The Vain Vault’. To his left stands Jason Ingalls – Jase, as he is usually called. With a microphone in hand, Jase raises it to his lips and speaks.
“And now, he is the greatest UGWC Cross-Hemisphere Champion that this company has ever had…he is currently a co-holder of the UGWC Cooperative Championships with the reputable Dirge…and he truly is ‘Vanity at its Finest’…he is the man, the myth, the legend, and the ICON…’VAIN’ ALLLANNNN WALLACCEEEE!!!!!!!!!!”
Vain smiles a beautiful smile, as obvious canned applause is piped over the sound system. Jason Ingalls turns the microphone off, and then makes his way over to the first guest chair…taking a seat.
“Vain truly appreciates those kind words, Jase. I am so glad that I decided to acquire your services, and finally let that idiotic twit brother of Celeste’s go. Best decision that I’ve ever made, to be perfectly honest. And during a lifetime of making nothing but the right decision, that’s saying something.”
“You are an inspiration to the masses, Alan. You truly are. If people would only decide to follow your lead, the world would be a much better place.”
“Unfortunately, Mr. Ingalls, the world is filled with people that choose to cheer for the likes of common trash like ‘The Devil’s Most Wanted’…and arrogant twits like ‘The Piercing Media Network’. Alas, there will always be idiocy in this world, Jase. It cannot be helped.”
More obvious piped-in applause, as both Vain and Jase smile and wave at the unseen crowd.
“Moving on, it seems that there are quite a few older wrestling fans that have taken offense to the actions that ‘The Puppet Masters’ took last Monday. It seems that our middle-aged demographic was put off by the actions that we took against one Colin Zale.”
“Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy, in my opinion, Alan.”
“Let me start out by saying that Vain holds no ill-will towards Mr. Zale. Had he done the right thing…had he done what Dirge asked him time and time again to do…things would have turned out extremely different for him. Instead, he chose to go the difficult route, and he forced our hand.”
“He always has been a difficult person, Alan. Trust me on that.”
“Vain truly doesn’t know Mr. Zale, but I have always taken Dirge’s word as he has vouched for the character of the man. Dirge is an extremely fair man, and as I said a few moments ago, he gave Mr. Zale every opportunity to do the right thing, and hand the Paramount Championship over to its rightful owner. Colin – possibly due to too many chair shots to the head over the duration of his career – decided to be difficult. And he paid the price for that decision.”
“And everything was fine until Spyder and Zane decided to but their noses in where they didn’t belone. Bastards…”
“Oh, ‘Mr. Ego’ hasn’t forgotten about Mr. Spyder or Mr. Scott. However, Remi, Donovan and myself have all agreed that we will speak with Dirge first, before exacting any type of revenge that is warranted. But those two individuals will hear from us soon enough…that much is a promise.”
Once again, canned applause envelopes the studio, causing Vain to perform a double-take.
“With all of the energy in this place, and the type of responses that Vain is hearing, he feels like Arsenio Hall at the moment. Take that, 1994.”
“Only you wouldn’t have had your show cancelled, Alan. Everyone here knows that.”
“Truer words have never been spoken, Jase.”
Another round of applause. They truly love this man, don’t they?
“Moving on, it seems that Dirge and I have been mandated to put our newly-won Cooperative Titles on the line, against the team that we won them against, Travis Pierce and Eden Morgan. How they managed to get their rematch so soon…with David Damarest as the UGWC Creative Director…is beyond me, but come Monday, that is the very thing that will happen.”
“I know Edie rather well, if I must say, Alan…and when she puts her mind to something, she sees it through to the end. And she’s a lot tougher than most think. If I can give you some advice…make sure that you and your partner are prepared. Because if you aren’t…she just may well surprise you.”
“Trust ‘The Vain One’ when he says this…we are not looking past Eden Morgan. The problem with Eden is, will her head be right for this matchup? That is the ultimate question, Jase.”
“She seems focused, Alan…especially with the events that occurred with Colin Zale.”
“The question is, what will she focus on? At WrestleStock, she was purely focused on the Cooperative Match, and winning the Cooperative Titles. Until she wasn’t. Seriously showed a lack of intelligence in focusing on Mickey Dragon like she did. She, alone, cost her team a chance of holding the UGWC Cooperative Titles high in the air at the end of the night. And now, she speaks as if Dirge and I were lucky to win them? She speaks as how we don’t deserve to hold them? That’s preposterous in it’s stupidity. We won them as a team…when I was down and out, Dirge came to my aid. What happened with Pierce was down? That’s right…Miss Morgan decided to focus on someone that had already been eliminated. Nice one, Princess.”
Laughter comes from the crowd, as Jase and Vain speak back and forth.
“Speaking of Pierce, I was unfortunate enough to witness that travesty of a show he hosts. He seemed to have more than usual to say this week.”
“Unfortunately, Jase…I bore witness to the same travesty as you. Some of it was laughable…but most of it was just sad.”
“How so, Alan?”
“Well Jase, for starters, someone should let Mr. Pierce know that confessionals are sooooo the 90’s. Honestly, nobody has given a damn about them since ‘The Real World’ was actually relevant. Sure, others may use them…but nobody cares anymore. You’d think a member of a media conglomerate like PMN would know that. Apparently not.”
“Touché.”
“It seems that Mr. Pierce is more focused on what team he will be on at ‘Outlast’, than he is on challenging for the UGWC Cooperative Championship. Vain always assumed that he was always focused on what is important. Maybe his infatuation with Miss Morgan is clouding his judgment.”
“I always thought there was something between them, even when she would swear there wasn’t.”
“Vain feels that you are better off, Jase. And if Pierce would use the head on his shoulders to do his thinking, he’d realize that he would be better off without her, too. Think about it…look at everyone that she has gotten close to over the last year…..”
“Zane Scott lost his mind, and went all ‘Lord of the Flies’ on us, and is painting his face up like he’s attending the local community college, and working on his Bachelor of Clown Science degree.”
“Colin Zale is lying in a hospital bed, having his breathing be assisted, as his loved ones cry around him.”
“And Ryan Hanneman…well, do we really need to go into what happened to Ryan Hanneman?”
“No, we probably don’t, Alan. I think that subject was beaten to death months ago.”
“Vain sees what you did there, Mr. Ingalls…and Vain appreciates the subtle humor. Nicely done, my friend.”
“What can I say, Alan…Jase tries.”
The two men look at each other and chuckle.
“Travis Pierce might want to think twice before he gets too close to Miss Morgan. Vain would hate to see something bad happen to the ‘face’ of the Piercing Media Network. That would pierce the ‘heart’ of the group, don’t you think, Jase?”
Before Jason Ingalls can reply, the phone on Vain’s desk begins to ring. Vain looks at it incredulously.
“Seriously…that isn’t just a prop?”
Vain reaches down and hits the ‘speaker’ button.
“You’re on the line with ‘The Vain One’. To what do you owe the honor?”
An unknown voice on the other end is heard.
“It’s been a long time, Alan. ‘Tis quite sad seeing what you’ve been reduced to.”
Vain chuckles as he looks at the phone.
“Have you been hitting the bottle, friend? You must…why else would you speak to ‘The Vain One’ in this manner?”
“You think that you haven’t lowered yourself over the last decade or so, Alan? That speaks volumes, my friend.”
“Who is this that Vain is speaking to?”
“The question is…who is the Vain that is doing the speaking for you?”
Vain and Jase look at each other, bewildered expressions on both of their faces. The voice on the other line continues.
“At one time, Alan, you were a force to be reckoned with. At one time, you were feared. And at one time, you were able to recognize when others were merely feeding you a bunch of bullshit.”
“Now just wait just a minute…how dare you call into MY show…”
“And how dare YOU bastardize yourself for them! How dare YOU whore yourself out to those that are not worthy of standing beside the REAL ‘Vain’ Alan Wallace?! Have you no shame?”
Vain scrunches his nose at the remarks, obviously perturbed by what is taking place.
“Vain isn’t quite sure who you think you are, my friend…”
“And I am certain that you aren’t quite sure of who you are any more, either, Alan. I knew this would happen…I told you this would happen. Years ago, when you first met that gash of yours…”
Vain’s face turns white as he stares at the phone. He quickly picks up the receiver, taking the phone off of speaker, and begins speaking in hushed tones.
The scene fades.
