This will be difficult for to for you to understand, but I'm going to try to explain it to you anyway.
Everyone claimed they love the unique character of Holden Orson. Some even loved the fact that The Mainstreamer used it as a mask of sorts to re-enter the wrestling world. But everyone seems to think it was an ironic twist of a persona just to trick Vain. It was far more than that, folks.
September 2nd, 2006 was the last day The Mainstreamer you think you know was truly himself. His story from September 3rd has been well told (see "A Night of Vanity"). But Vain did more than "pull one over" on The Mainstreamer. Vain instituted a crash in Mainstreamer's mental stability. The Mainstreamer had always been somewhat mentally unstable. He had just started to come around as a Champion who didn't need his violent side to remain at the top. He thought he was earning the respect of his peers, not just the fear. The match with Vain was supposed to symbolize that. Instead, it was a twisted trick. Not only did he lose cleanly in the match, he lost a friend, a respected rival, and his ability to avoid his dark side. HSW feel around him before he could take any action to get himself of the dark place he had been left at. He remained locked in that place for 8 years.
When I say locked, I truly mean locked. The Mainstreamer became disconnected from society and went into a mental seclusion. Initially, The Mainstreamer just had hatred. He sat in a room plotting against Vain and watching replays of the event that sent him over the edge. He plotted. He obsessed.
HSW reopened, and The Mainstreamer eagerly returned, awaiting his chance to settle the score with Vain. But it never happened. HSW closed again. It closed this time for good, with The Mainstreamer the last Champion in the history of the company. Vain never showed up. He never felt validated.
After some time, his obsession turn into depression. He continued to think about the night that Vain rocked his career. Was it his fault? Was he over hyped? Was the only real success in his life a sham?
He tried to find Vain. A successful Vain would be confirmation that he was bested by a strong competitor. Surely the man that did this to him was a true titan of the industry. But Vain had fallen off the map since that day. He wasn't able to find confirmation of any sort. The Depression deepened.
The Mainstreamer started to punish himself. If he was never the competitor that he thought he was, then what exactly was he? Outside of the squared circle he was nothing.
His only real friend and mentor had died. His military service never left him with any sort of personal connection. He had never married or had children. His parents had died as a child. When HSW ended, he had nothing. There was nowhere for him to go. No one for him to see. Without the success of the Mainstreamer, Martin Graber was nothing.
He was too proud to seek help. As his depression deepened, he started to punish himself. Martin didn't do what most people do in this case. He didn't turn to substance abuse or self harm.
Martin inherited a fortune when his parents were killed. This had allowed Marin to live comfortably for his entire life. He kept nice homes in both South Carolina and New York. He abandoned both homes and moved to a small town in Kansas. Gas, Kansas.
Martin tried to find a life in Gas. He found he had no useful skills, and the only work he could find was that of a short order cook at a truck stop. He didn't do the job particularly well, and was fired after a couple of weeks. Martin got another job as a short order cook in a waffle-themed restaurant. He did the job well enough, but frequently heard complaints from his co-workers and some customers about being stoic and unapproachable. His co-workers had labeled him a “weirdo.”He stayed there for a couple of months.
Eventually a customer recognized him from his past wrestling career. The man gushed over him and did everything he could to get Martin to talk to him as The Mainstreamer. That was Martin's last day as a short order cook. Martin simply walked out of the restaurant and never returned.
Martin never wanted to be recognized as The Mainstreamer again. He started going by the name of Holden, the name of the main character of Catcher in the Rye. He decided on Orson as his surname, after Orson Welles, the man who orchestrated the War of the Worlds. He also decided to hide his face with masks.
Holden Orson eventually took a job as a night time janitor at a church. He wasn't paid much, but he found the church as the only people who would let him stay employed wearing a mask and not speaking with anyone. He lived in a extra bedroom that a older woman at the church allowed him to stay in. It was a room above a garage with a cot, a desk, and not much else.
He spent his days punching an old punching bag he found in a dumpster until his knuckles bled. He did a through job of cleaning the church every night. He'd scrub the floors while contemplating his failed life. His depression led his thoughts into dark corners. Why did he have no one to turn to when his career crumbled? Why had he never found love? Once the wrestling world stopped for him, no one was there for him. No friends and no family. Now that he was a sham of a wrestler, he was a mask wearing weirdo that cleaned the church every night.
He contemplated where Vain had ended up. Did he return to the wrestling world? Was he a titan of the industry now? Was it okay that he got one over on The Mainstreamer? But if he was that good, why didn't he come back to HSW when The Mainstreamer tried to return? Why did HSW fold so quickly with The Mainstreamer as the face of the company? Where was Ichabod? Hadn't they become close friends? Why did Wafer have to die?
Needless to say, the church was spotless every night. After three years of janitorial work, the church, Holden was given a bonus. The congregation has wondered about him. The man quietly kept the church immaculate. He never missed a day and the church was always in perfect shape. The thought was that Holden could solve what ever problems he obviously had with an influx of cash. Holden slipped the check back into the collection plate the next night.
By now it was 2011. The Mainstreamer had ceased to exist and only this new Holden Orson persona existed. He continues to peddle away at the church, cleaning every night, punching his bag every day, and doubting his worth while laying in his cot every morning. He further secluded himself from the outside world. He avoided the people at the church and even the older lady who had taken him in. He went weeks or months at a time without ever seeing another person.
After another couple of years he arrived at the church for his nightly shift. The pastor and the woman who had taken him in were waiting for him. They tried to get through to him. They wanted to know why he never took the bonus check. They wanted to know why he had no friends or family. They wanted to know why he never came to the church.
Holden asked them to just let him clean the church and leave him alone. They left him alone that night, but started to chow up every couple of weeks to speak to him. He was starting to become a rumor. People thought he was a criminal in hiding. The pastor eventually asked for Holden to prove who he was. Since Holden Orson wasn't a real person, he couldn't do that. He was asked to leave.
For the first time since 2008, Holden had to venture back out into the world. It was a very different place. He returned to his abandoned home in New York. The place had 5 years of filth built up, but his 5 years as a janitor quickly solved that problem. Something felt right about his home in New York. He started to look into what he'd missed in the last 8 years. He had missed a lot. Saddam Hussein had been convicted of crimes against humanity and hanged to death. Fidel Castro had stepped down. Kim Jung-il was dead. His son now ran North Korea. The president is a black guy. He'd missed the death of Osama Bin Laden as well. Michael Jackson, George Carlin, Neil Armstrong, Gerald Ford, Joe Fraizer were also gone.
Holden spend the next couple of months trying to understand the world he had returned to. It was like he awoke from a coma. He hated this world with all the social media, smart phones, and memes. He missed the times he'd left. He scoffed at the world for a long time, but always avoided one part of the world.
He avoided it for as long as he could, but he eventually found the world of wrestling. He found about what Chris Beniot did to his family. This had a big effect on Holden Orson. If The Mainstreamer would have had a family, would he have done the same thing? The Mainstreamer hid from society and started going by a different name. Chris Beniot killed his family and then himself. How big is a difference is that? When you think about it, both men used an extreme measure to rid himself of his demons. He watched as the world turned their back on Chris Beniot.
The man deserved it right? He killed an innocent woman and child because he had went nuts. Then he killed himself to escape. Holden Orson has basically killed The Mainstreamer to avoid his failure. He had hidden at a church for 5 years to avoid facing the real world. He convinced himself he was another Beniot.
Holden Orson broke down for a while. He lived on the bank account that Marin Graber left behind. He sat up night after night, punching a new punching bad and cursing “The Mainstreamer.” He hated what the Mainstreamer was.
Holden Orson's hate for The Mainstreamer eventually turned into hate for Vain. What The Mainstreamer had never realized was that Vain was almost exactly what the Mainstreamer was. Arrogant, smooth talking, larger than life, void of life outside the ring.
Holden Orson decided it was time he looked into Vain. Vain had shown up in a place called UGWC. He was in the middle of his mediocre run as just another member of the roster. Vain was unremarkable. Just like The Mainstreamer.
Holden Orson decided that Martin Graber and The Mainstreamer were done. He started the process of changing himself. He wanted to legally become Holden Orson. He went through the legal process of changing himself to Holden Orson. He contacted a lawyer about changing everything about himself. During the process, the lawyer found a will from The Mainstreamer's late mentor Wafer. The will had asked The Mainstreamer to look after Wafer's son.
Holden Orson was thrown for a loop. He didn't know Wafer had a son. Because he had been so engrossed with his failures, he never dealt with Wafer's death. He didn't even attend the funeral. Because he never showed up, Wafer's son spent his teenage years in foster care. Now, Wafer's son was 21 years old, working at a car facotry in South Carolina, and married. The Mainstreamer never came through.
Holden Orson stopped the process of changing himself. He flew to South Carolina and found Wafer's son. Wafer had passed his name to his son. Thomas Lawrence, Jr. Every one called him Larry for short. Holden Orson found out everything he could about Larry.
Larry was a missing link in Holden's life. He could have been Larry's god father. The Mainstreamer could have had purpose after HSW. Because of his own twisted mental state, Larry grew up in foster care.
Holden eventually gather the courage to meet with Larry. He called him first and tried to explain who he was. He never mentioned he was at one point, The Mainstreamer. He introduced himself simply as a good friend of his father's. He apologized for not coming into his life sooner.
The two met in person and Holden got to know Larry. Larry was put off by Holden's mask and outlook he had on modern society. Larry even called him a hipster. He found that Larry had adored his father and had dreamed of following in his footsteps as a professional wrestler.
Holden eventually told Larry that he was a former wrestler himself. He desperately wanted to bond with Larry. Larry got excited and asked if he was returned for good. That's when Holden told Larry that he planned to return to the ring very soon.
Larry lit up like a Christmas light. He wanted desperately to be involved. Larry asked him if he'd get him involved in the sport himself. Holden promised that he'd train him and until he was ready, he could manage him.
Holden then found himself in need of employment. He had to join sports entertainment once again. He thought back to the UGWC. Vain had shown how easy it was to blend in. Holden contacted Jet Somers about joining.
Jet Somers eventually negotiated a spot on the roster for Holden Orson. It was difficult, as Holden never spoke to Jet about formerly being The Mainstreamer. Jet said he could start on the cycle before Wrestlestock.
Holden passed the news onto Larry. He was ecstatic. Larry asked what Holden's gimmick would be. He asked if he was going to train. He even asked if he had any allies. Holden frantically tried to provide Larry with something to latch onto. He told him he was going to be a “hipster.” With his currently personality, Larry loved it. He then told him he was going to train in Cambodia. Holden's boxing background mixed well with learning Labokkatao.
Holden took Larry to Cambodia to train with him. Larry was hopeless at Labokkatao. It was obvious Larry had never seen a ring in his life, wrestling or boxing. But Holden was able to appreciate the time spent with Larry.
As Holden's start date with UWC was coming, Larry started talking about allies. Larry was a bit of a book work and started mentioning who he should try to ally himself with. He mentioned PMN, DMW, and The Puppermasters. Holden flinched. Vain was in the puppet masters. He found out that Ichabod, an old friend/foe was also aligned with the Puppet Masters as well. In a fit of confusion Holden had declared he had already found an ally, and that he would surprise Larry with that person after starting.
Holden made his debut in UGWC and found himself looking for an ally to back up his promise to Larry. As Holden Orson, he had no history and no friends. He actually resulted in hiring an actor. Sean Harrison. The man who played Waldo on the Family Matters sitcom in the 1990s. Holden's quirky gimmick let this somehow make sense.
Holden continues his tenure in UGWC. He avoided feuds. He avoided title matches. He did just enough to look good, but not win anything big.
But The Mainstreamer wasn't dead. The Mainstreamer saw Ichabod and Vain in the locker room. The hate started to fester once again every time he saw Vain.
After Outlast, Ichabod approached Holden Orson. Ichabod had figured him out. He promised to keep it a secret, but was very inquisitive about Larry.
Holden started focusing on Vain. He hated the man so much. He saw Vain's flaws in every person on the roster. Hastings, Roberts, Dirge, and even Deimos all shared his sense of accomplishment. Addams, Klaus, and Gain Jones shared Vain's eccentric attitude. Fusion, Jet, and Monroe all shared his habit of persistently trying to steal the spotlight. Every member of the roster shared Vain's obsession with accomplishments and title counts.
The Mainstreamer was starting to seep through. The Diaz family figured Holden Orson out as well. They tried to settle an old score. The Mainstreamer's violent side came out in Holden Orson. He started to freak out Larry and Waldo. Ichabod told him it seemed like he was reverting back to The Mainstreamer. Holden fought it. Ichabod encouraged it.
Eventually, Holden Orson couldn't hold it any longer. 8 years of pent up aggression and hatred. He wasn't there for Larry. He allowed himself to fall into self pity and obscurity. The Mainstreamer was taking over.
Holden Orson started to revert. He literally killed the Diaz family. He started to get violent in the ring. He seethed. He wanted Vain. He wanted to beat everyone on the roster. This was what The Mainstreamer would have wanted.
Eventually he spoke with Ichabod about returning the Run of the Mill. The Mainstreamer had fought Ichabod in a run of the Mill a decade ago. He beat Ichabod in the most brutal match of his life. He had lost his mind. It's the only reason he was able to win. He was losing his mind again now. He was very close to snapping. He wanted it to happen to Vain. He wanted the Mill to return.
From there, the two men contacted Jet Somers and “A night of Vanity” happened. Holden Orson was not the Mainstreamer once again. Ichabod was there to help Larry train for his dream.
And Vain knew who was coming after him.
Holden also got to drag more bodies with him into the mill. Red Fusion, Harley Addams, and Dirge. All represented something he hated about Vain. Once he entered the mill, he would lose his mind. He would get to disect those things he hated about Vain with Red, Harley, and Dirge acting as his sacrificial lambs. Then he'd get to end Vain.
8 years of hatred culminated into one night of insane brutality.
8 years of schizophrenic self doubt and loathing.
8 years of obsession over a single night.
8 years of self hatred.
8 years of dormant violence.
That's what brutality is.
And folks, when I tell you Holden Orson is more than a gimmick, you have to understand. Martin, Mainstreamer, Holden... whatever you chose to call him lost his mind 8 years ago. And while his wrath will flood the mill, he won't find his sanity there. Holden Orson is just as big of a part of the Mainstreamer as Martin Graber is.
Which ever of this man's three personalities shows at any given time, there's one thing you need to know. The man is insane. God help those who find themselves in his playground at the Run of the Mill.
Everyone claimed they love the unique character of Holden Orson. Some even loved the fact that The Mainstreamer used it as a mask of sorts to re-enter the wrestling world. But everyone seems to think it was an ironic twist of a persona just to trick Vain. It was far more than that, folks.
