The Consortium are left together in Robert Ooley’s office after Eden Morgan drops a pipe-bomb on them and storms out triumphantly.
Pierce: I didn’t...I didn’t plan any of this.
The three consortium members stand in silence for a few moments.
Vines: But when she says it like that…
Dexter Vines shrugs, and Ooley taps his bat against his leg.
Pierce: Yeah…
Travis smirks.
Pierce: It’s working out pretty awesome, isn’t it?
Ooley and Vines exchange a glance.
Ooley: What did you do, steal Relapse’s stash? Is that why he’s clean now?
Pierce: Please. The two of you know full well that when I took this position, I placed my full attention on the growth and development of UGWC as a global brand, and everything I’ve done since then has been to that end. My personal vendetta against Eden Morgan has been set aside.
Vines: What about this Global Challenge stuff?
Pierce: She was the sixth person to hit the ring in a field of eight. That’s pretty good position. She barely managed to qualify. That’s on her. You know what, we all know what happened back in 2013.
Vines: Yeah.
None of them speak for a moment.
Vines: Right, what happened in 2013?
Ooley: The same thing happened to him.
He points at Travis with his bat.
Ooley: Qualified last, had his semi-final immediately, got crushed.
Vines: Right...by Zane.
Pierce: And I didn’t complain about it.
Vines: There is still the Cypress stuff.
Travis points at Ooley.
Pierce: You’re the one that told me Ingalls was fired over a year ago.
Ooley now points the bat at Vines.
Ooley: He never bothered to tell him.
Vines: Hold on, what?
Ooley rolls his eye.
Ooley: I got tired of his shit and canned him last year.
Vines: I’ve still been having him fill out forms!
Ooley: Yes, I ignore those and file the real ones.
Vines: He doesn’t realize he isn’t being paid?
Ooley looks at Travis.
Pierce: PMN had all of our compensations funnelled through the company. It wasn’t something I was directly involved with or stayed on top of. Eden could have easily had us just continue to pay him and I wouldn’t have noticed. I’m sure she has Bryson doing the same thing.
Vines: And nobody notices they are seeing more than one doctor?
Ooley: Nobody bothers to get checked for small stuff, and the big things get second and third opinions all the time anyway. Bamboo has been fine for months.
Vines: And her missing rematch?
Pierce: What missing rematch? Nobody gets a World Title rematch when they are beaten around here. Nobody. It happened once, last year, and it was made a big deal of because it was the first and only time it’s happened, and we all thought Damarest was corrupt for handing it to Hastings. Meanwhile, Zane loses the title and reacts by beating up a defenseless old man.
Dexter looks at Ooley.
Vines: Just how old is Grey Coppi, anyway?
Ooley: Fuck if I know. He was the manager of the liquor store I worked in when I was in college.
Vines: How did he get an interview job in LWF?
Ooley: We thought it was funny.
Pierce: If Eden really believes everything she just spouted off in here, she’s drinking her own Kool-aid, and I feel bad for her, seriously.
Ooley: Well, aren’t you a fucking pussy.
Pierce: What makes you say that?
Ooley: She’s in here mouthing off on you and you just stand there and take it. Why didn’t you say all this shit to her?
Pierce: I didn’t think she was really serious.
Ooley: You knew damn well she was.
Pierce: And it accomplishes nothing to argue with her. The more she carries on, the more she makes herself look like a fool, and that is better than any actual retort I could give. All I’ve done is put the rope on the floor. She is the one choosing to hang herself with it. Listen, if she doesn’t do what she did last year, I’m not standing here now. I’ve come out ahead in all this. I should probably be telling her “thank you.”
Vines: Then why don’t you?
Pierce: I am, through my actions. If she can get out of her own way, she’ll come out ahead in the end on this too. Right now she just wants to find things to blame her faults on. She wants to whine about it all. That’s fine. She’ll get over it. And she’ll be better.
Travis snaps his fingers.
Pierce: Piercing truth, I promise.
Pierce: I didn’t...I didn’t plan any of this.
