“You’re a selfish fucking twat, and you bloody well know it, Alan!”
The UGWC Cooperative Champions stand in the middle of ‘The Syndicate’s’ dressing room; Killian with a scowl on his face, as he points a finger in ‘The Vain One’s’ direction. Vain throws his hands in the air, flabbergasted by the events that are currently unfolding.
“Vain cannot believe that you are serious right now. Are you kidding me?”
“Do I look like I am fucking joking, Alan? What you have done is incomprehensible to me. You are the single most selfish individual I have ever met in my life, and you are so daft that you don’t even realize it.”
“I don’t see what the big deal is, Killian. I’ve been offered a chance, and I am going to take it. Zane is fine with my decision…where in the hell do you get off questioning my motives, or my allegiances…when if you were presented this opportunity, you know damn well that you would do the same?”
Killian begins poking Vain in the chest as he makes his next statement.
“Don’t you presume to know me, you smarmy little cunt. Don’t forget that you were mired in mediocrity before I came back along, trapped in petty feuds with jokes like Kurt Brady. If it weren’t for me, you wouldn’t even have this opportunity. Don’t you forget it!”
Vain slaps the hand of Killian King, and the two go nose to nose.
“While you may have had a hand in helping me…see the light, for lack of a better term…I have gotten to where I am on my abilities, and my abilities alone. Don’t you forget that I was a triple champion until I decided to relinquish my Cross-Hemisphere Title.”
“Only because I won the match at Infinity, you fuck. Were it not for me, you would have lost one of those belts that night. And did I even get a ‘Thank You’? No, and do you know why? It’s because you are a user, Alan Wallace. You take advantage of all that are around you, and you don’t give it a second thought.”
“Now who is presuming to know the other, you prick? Let’s not forget that I went to bat for you, and helped you even get in the door of UGWC. I put my neck on the line for someone with a sketchy past, and yet you proclaim that I am selfish? You’re an asshole, and were it not for me, the only chance that you would have of holding gold is when you face Chaos next week. And do you know something, Killian? I don’t think you have what it takes to beat him. So why don’t you show me a tad more respect, for all that I have done for you over the last six months!”
As the two men are about to come to blows, the door opens, and in walks Eden Morgan and Zane Scott. Sensing the tension in the air, Eden speaks.
“Put them away, boys. I can assure you that I couldn’t possibly care less about whose is bigger.”
Tension fills the air, as Vain and Killian still stand nose to nose. With a roll of her eyes, Eden Morgan makes her way over towards the bar area, pulling a water from the mini-fridge that their dressing room is equipped with. Zane stands silently by the door, a blank expression upon his face, as he watches the two men before him.
With Killian almost shaking in anger, he breaks the silence.
“I believe I shall take my leave now. Congratulations…’partner’.”
Killian bolts towards the door, with Vain yelling from behind him.
“I don’t know what’s crawled up your ass, but you best get your mind right. We’ve got Orson and Rydell in one week’s time!”
Zane chuckles from near the door, as he looks in Vain’s direction. As Eden shakes her head from side-to-side, Zane speaks.
“Did we come at a bad time, Wallace?”
Vain stares at Zane for a moment, before turning and slamming his locker door shut.
Wednesday, March 18 – 13:00 CST
Vain stands behind a podium, as the flashes of numerous cameras envelope him. He smiles as he leans forward and speaks into the microphone.
“What a huge turnout here this afternoon. Of course it’s not surprising…this is ‘Mr. Ego’ we’re talking about here. And when ‘The Vain One’ is slated to make an announcement, he fully expects for you imbeciles to congregate in mass.”
More camera flashes, though a low grumble is heard from some of the media members in attendance. Vain pays no attention, as that glorious smile stays plastered on his face.
“Now I’m sure that all of you are wondering just why I made a special point of scheduling this press conference here in Chicago, when I live in Miami, and spend a large amount of time in Los Angeles. Simply put, now that maintenance has been completed on ‘Vain Force One’, it’s just nice not to have to deal with the general public while in the air. And so, here we are…
Numerous members of the media all begin talking at once, causing Vain to burst out into laughter, as he holds up his right hand.
“While Vain’s hearing is as perfect as everything else that he has going for him, unfortunately, I am unable to decipher what twenty of you are saying, when you are speaking all at the same time. So let’s try this again, shall we?”
The media members all then begin raising their hand, and wait for Vain to acknowledge them before speaking. Seems as if a few of them have been in attendance for a Vain press conference before.
“Vain – April Madison here, from the Chicago Tribune. Will you be discussing your decision to forfeit the UGWC Cross-Hemisphere Championship, opting instead to challenge Klaus vonKnorre for the UGWC World Championship?”
“What more can ‘Yours Truly’ say? I was presented with an opportunity too good to pass up; an opportunity that could position me as the flagship of the wrestling industry, yet again; an opportunity to make things as they should be.”
“Everyone here knows that Vain is simply money. He puts people in the seats, his merchandise sales are through the roof, and he’s allowing UGWC to reap the monetary benefits, hand over fist. If you remember correctly, I did the same thing for Headstrong Wrestling.”
“So instead of asking if I will be discussing my decision to challenge for the World Title, the question that you all should be asking yourselves is a much simpler one: Why did it take so long for the powers-that-be to come to their senses, and realize that Vain as the World Champion is what this company – nay, this business – needs?”
Another murmur of the crowd, and more flashbulbs. A middle-aged man in the center of the room raises his hand, and Vain acknowledges him.
“Marco Passitone here, for PWI. Everyone saw what happened between you and your Cooperative partner last week after Synergy. How will you two be able to coexist, when ‘Sex and Violence’ puts their UGWC Cooperative titles on the line against Dave Rydell and ‘The Mainstreamer’?”
“Killian King and I have known each other for many years, Mr. Passitone. So long so, that I look at Killian as family. And as everyone here knows, sometimes family members find themselves involved in disagreements. That doesn’t change the fact that ‘Sex and Violence’ are the best tandem here in UGWC; nor does it change the fact that even on our worst day, we are simply better than Dave and the Hip-Man.”
“This past Monday, Killian and I both said some things that shouldn’t have. Fortunately for all of you, we’re both adults, and therefore will make things right before we step into the ring this coming Monday.”
“And if not…we still have the talent to successfully defend our Cooperative Titles.”
Mr. Passitone follows up with a general statement.
“I’m sure that both Rydell and Orson will do everything in their power to further the rift between you and Killian, as they strive to hoist those titles up at the end of the night.”
“I would expect nothing less, Mr. Passitone. I also know that they will give us everything that they have. Sadly, just like at Infinity, Rydell and Orson will leave empty-handed. Again. And the wrestling gods will rejoice, because ‘Sex and Violence’ are what is best for this company.”
A long-haired man, in his late teens or early twenties, rises to his feet.
“Yo dude, the name is Aaron, and I have a Youtube blog dedicated solely to professional wrestling. I guess my question is, if you aren’t going to talk about either the UGWC World Title Match or the UGWC Cooperative Title Match in detail…why the hell are we even here? This just seems like a colossal waste of freakin’ time, bro. No offense.”
“Vain told Jason Reeves last week that a press conference was coming, and that the main subject of said press conference would be the question that is on everyone’s mind.”
“It is a question all of you have harped on incessantly in recent weeks, and it is a question that the world will be buzzing with, come this time tomorrow.”
“Does Vain have any thoughts regarding the allegations levied against him, by one Travis Roberts?”
Vain allows the question to hang in the air, as he looks out upon the group of men and women that sit before him. The Youtube blogger eventually speaks up.
“Well?”
“Well, what?”
“Well, do you?”
“Do I what?”
“Sweet Christ, do you have ADHD or something?”
Vain half-shrugs at the question. Honestly, he doesn’t even look like he has heard the young blogger. Yet he still speaks, because, well, he’s Vain.
“You know why I’m here.”
“No, dude…we don’t.”
“You know why I’m here.”
“What are you even talking about, bro? What is wrong with you?”
“I’m just here so I don’t get fined.”
All of the media members are now growing discontented. ‘Aaron’ speaks up again.
“Dude, you’re the one that called this press conference!”
“For the next thirty seconds, I’ll just be looking at you all, like you’re looking at me.”
Vain stares out at the crowd, but ignores any and all questions lobbed his way. After the designated time period is up, the smile returns to his face.
“I would like to thank you for coming out and basking in the greatness that is Vain. It is my hope that what you have heard here today will lead you to great things, but let’s face it, it won’t. You’re the media.”
Vain grabs his water, and steps away from the podium, as camera flashes go off again. Aaron is left standing there, a confused look upon his face.
“Who’s he think he is? Marshawn Lynch?”
Thursday, March 19 – 11:00 EST
“Is there anything that you wish to tell me, Alan?”
Vain sits in his study, his feet propped up on his desk, as he stares across the desk. As the camera pans out, we see a man seated in front of the desk. The camera stops on a shot over this unknown person’s shoulder, allowing Vain to stay within view.
“Well that could most definitely be a loaded question, my friend. There are many things that Vain could possibly tell you.”
The man chuckles.
“No Alan, you most definitely understand what it is that I am inquiring about. However, I will swallow my pride long enough to placate your ego…just this once.”
A coy grin begins to form on the face of ‘The Money Maker’.
“As you can understand, I keep minimal tabs on the wrestling industry these days. So as I am sure that you can surmise, I am on the edge of my seat in anticipation with regards to the decision that you wound up making concerning Barcelona.”
“Ahh, yes…Barcelona. Did I ever tell you about the last time I visited Spain?”
Before his visitor can reply, Vain begins his saga.
“And I kid you not, my friend…her ecstasy was so great, the runners and the bulls alike all stopped what they were doing, averted their attention to our balcony window, and celebrated with us. The cheering was unlike anything that I had heard to that point in life. And the bellows of the bulls did indeed have us in stitches. It was that day that I realized something…that I was in fact the most interesting man in the universe this – or any – millennia.”
Vain smiles as he contemplates that last statement.
“Hmm, that has a nice ring to it. Maybe I should add it to my bio…”
“Are you quite finished, Alan?”
The look on Vain’s face grows in consternation.
“I take it that you are not a fan of storytelling?”
“I have neither the time, nor the patience, to sit through such fable, Mr. Wallace. Not with so much at stake.”
Vain smiles at his visitor.
“Well then, I take it you don’t want to hear the one where I take the UGWC World Title from Klaus vonKnorre then..”
His visitor claps his hands together once, as he rises to his feet.
“Indeed, that is the news that I wished to hear, Alan. We have much to speak about, but unfortunately I have a prior engagement that requires my attendance. I will speak with you tomorrow.”
His visitor turns to leave, as Vain takes his feet off of his desk.
“Leaving so soon, Simon?”
Friday, March 20 – 10:00 CST
Jason Reeves: “Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to another edition of ‘Straight Shooter’. I am your host, Jason Reeves, and my guest today is a man that needs no introduction. However it is written in his contract that I must, so here goes: He is one-half of the UGWC Cooperative Champions; he holds the long-since defunct HSW World Championship; and he forfeited his UGWC Cross-Hemisphere Championship, in order to gain a shot at the UGWC World Heavyweight Championship, currently held by Klaus vonKnorre. He is ‘the Money Maker’ himself, and he truly is ‘Vanity at its Finest’…he is ‘Vain’ Alan Wallace!”
The camera swings around to show that Vain is seated directly across from Jason Reeves. He forces a smile.
“Not bad, I suppose…though I would be remiss if I did not mention your neglect of the ‘Clit Whisperer’ moniker, or the fact that you failed to mention that I am also the single greatest Yahtzee Champion to ever grace the meager dwelling of one Travis Roberts.”
“I apologize for my lapse in judgment, Vain. I will be certain that it doesn’t happen again.”
“That would be best, Reeves.”
“I want to delve right into things here tonight, Vain…and as you are aware, we ask the hard-hitting questions here on ‘Straight Shooter’. I’m sure you can handle it.”
“Do your best, Reeves.”
“For starters, do you feel that your recent title history here in UGWC gives you any type of advantage, as we head into the Massive Melee pay per view?”
“No, Vain doesn’t believe that his recent title history has any bearing on what will happen in a few short days. Sure, I held the Cross-Hemisphere Title this most recent time for ninety-one days, defending it against all comers like a true champion should. And the only reason that I no longer hold that title is because I chose not to hold it. Had Vain decided to keep it, he would have held onto it for as long as he wanted…because there’s nobody that could have taken it from me. And yes, I’ve held one-half of the Cooperative Titles since July the fourth, a reign which has spanned two partners. And let’s face it, I’ve been the true HSW World Champion for almost an entire decade. All of that is true, but I do not believe that it holds any bearing on what happens this Monday. No, what matters this Monday is that Vain will do what he does best. Win. Because Vain is a winner, Jason Reeves, and that alone gives me an advantage at Massive Melee.”
“Speaking of your current partner in ‘Sex and Violence’, the last time that we saw the two of you together, he was voicing his displeasure with your decision after Synergy. Are the two of you going to be able to talk things out, before you meet the team of the Rystreamers?”
“The current relationship between Killian and myself is none of your concern, Reeves. Just know that when the bell sounds, Vain will be defending the UGWC Cooperative Titles. Whether Killian King is there or not is up to him.”
“Everyone knows that you are a man that tends to rub people the wrong way sometimes…”
“Success breeds contempt, Reeves.”
“In looking at your opponents for the Melee, we see that you have had extended feuds with each of them; The Mainstreamer , dating back to HSW; and Dave Rydell and >\/< right here in UGWC. Is there anything that you have learned in previous battles that you hope to exploit this time around?”
“You don’t show your hand before you call, Reeves. But it is rather fitting that they’ve seen fit to band together in their battle against ‘The Vain One’.”
“How so, Vain?”
“They all see the writing on the wall, Mr. Reeves. They’ve seen the success that ‘Yours Truly’ has had over the last year, and they know that it’s only a matter of time before ‘Mr. Ego’ is seated in his rightful place – at the top of this industry, where I belong.”
“Might be more difficult than you originally thought, Vain.”
“And why is that, Reeves? Because both Rydell and Graber have had so much success against ‘The Excellence of Sexecution’? Or is it because they’ve also added Ichabod to their little sucktastic circle jerk? Need I remind you that I’ve beaten him as well?”
“The past is the past, Vain. Looking towards the future, Dave Rydell has been pretty vocal about how he feels they will fare against yourself and Killian. Care to respond to those predictions?”
Vain sits in silence, a smirk on his face.
“Ok, let’s move on to The Mainstreamer. He has been looking for revenge on your for eight long years. And he finds himself across the ring from you, yet again. Are you prepared for what he will throw at you, as he and Dave Rydell strive to become the new Cooperative Champions?”
The smirk turns into a grin, and Vain begins to chuckle.
“Ok…Klaus vonKnorre has been overheard saying that you should have never taken the match against him, because he plans on recreating the violence that occurred during the Redneck Water Torture match. And as I’m sure you remember, you came out on the losing end of that match.”
“Yes, and I am sure that Klaus is going around telling anyone that will listen, that I don’t deserve to receive a match for his World Title. Maybe he was looking forward to another forty days and forty nights of not defending that title, who knows. All I know is that Eden has had the opportunity to lead this company as its World Champion; Zane Scott has had the opportunity to lead this company as its World Champion; and now, it’s Vain’s turn. And Vain is going to show everyone how it’s done.”
“The 'Fecal Matter Foursome' be damned.”
“But what about his threats that the same thing will happen, that happened in the Redneck Water Torture match?”
“Vain will give Klaus his due. He did, in fact, beat ‘The Vain One’ in the Redneck Water Torture match, with the Cross-Hemisphere Title on the line. And even though Mr. Ego’s heart wasn’t really in the match, he will offer his congratulations on a hard-fought victory.”
“What do you mean, your heart wasn’t in it?”
“Let’s face it, Reeves…it was KvK against Vain. With our history, that is a huge match. It was a match much bigger than a second-tier title. And while I have always held the Cross-Hemisphere Championship with great pride…a match of the caliber of Vain versus Klaus vonKnorre deserves more than a silver medal. A match like that deserves gold level status…it deserves the UGWC World Heavyweight Championship. And lo and behold, here we are. And this time around…Vain is focused.”
“So are you predicting to go two and zero in your matches at the pay per view?”
“Vain could go on and on about his past with those three individuals, but we’ve been there, and we’ve done that. And quite frankly, Vain’s opinions don’t really matter right now. Those of Alan Wallace, however, do.”
“What is it tha-“
“Shut up, Reeves. I’m talking.”
“The past is inconsequential. It’s the future that is important. And the future looks bright for UGWC. Sadly, some people feel that it is their time to shine.”
“Enter, Dave Rydell.”
“You see Reeves, Rydell feels as if he should be a main event talent. He feels that what he does in that ring is unrivaled, and he yearns to reap the benefits of being ‘the guy’. The problem, however, is that he’s viewing things through rose-colored glasses. And ultimately, it will lead to nothing but disappointment.”
“I admire your tenacity, Rydell. Truly. You fought tooth and nail in your quest to cut Klaus down to size, and you finally did it after numerous attempts. You wouldn’t give up, even when common sense had to tell you that enough was enough. That grit is why the fans absolutely adore you, Dave. You’re a man’s man, and you are someone that they can look up to.”
“But should they? Really? Because I distinctly remember being hit with a crutch a couple of months ago. Doesn’t sound like the actions of a true role model, but America is filled with hypocrites, so it wasn’t surprising that I heard them cheer you when you laid me out.”
“Sadly, that is the most offense that you have had against me, especially since I beat you down and took the Cross-Hemisphere Title from you. I understand that you’re still sore about that fact, but you are continually allowing your mouth to write checks, that your ass cannot even hope to possibly cash. You’re a mid-tier talent, Dave…nothing more, regardless of who you align yourself with in an attempt to cover up your own inadequacies. And while that might sound harsh, I’m only telling you for your own good. Because if you and I keep going down this road, I’m going to hurt you badly.”
“Ask Jezebel Saint what that’s like.”
Vain shifts in his seat, as Jason Reeves looks on in scared silence.
“Mainstreamer. My good buddy, Martin. This may come as a surprise to you, Martin, but I have the upmost respect for everything that you have accomplished in the ring.”
“At least that would have been my stance eight years ago.”
“Now I just view you with pity. You spent eight long years living a secluded life, having cut yourself off from all of your friends and family. Quite frankly, you were only a beard and a secluded cabin away from sending homemade explosives to the government I’m sure somehow wronged you.”
“Because that’s what you do, right Martin? Blame the bad things that happen to you on others, so that you can mask your own shortcomings?”
“You spent all those years muttering in your sleep about me; you spend all that time under a mask, in hopes to catch me off guard; you put all of your eggs into a hipsters basket. And for what, Martin? To have one night where you gain your revenge, only to have that night followed up by months of dominance by me? That’s gotta hurt, eh Marty?”
“Would make sense to join up with Klaus I suppose. I mean, if you can’t get the job done yourself…might as well employ someone that actually has a chance against me. Yeah…excellent plan, Graber.”
“What do you think Wafer would say, if he would see what you’ve done to yourself for the last decade? No, I didn’t know him…but I knew some of the same people as he did. And he sounded like a standup guy. He sounded like a no-nonsense guy. He sounded like someone that would fight tooth and nail to right any wrongs done to him.”
“Man to man…”
“And face to face.”
“My actions in HSW were meant to set up that company for years to come. You and I were the only two men that could have carried that company on our backs. And there is no way that could have happened, if we were friends. I made the conscious decision to do what I did, in order to ensure that company would sustain for years to come.”
“You chose to take that as me disrespecting your mentor and friend.”
“I guess placing blame was a lot easier than just admitting that I was the better man. But that’s ok, Graber…because I will continue to prove it. Only now, I will continue to prove it just to spite you.”
Reeves leans forward, attempting to reach for the microphone.
“I’ll be done in a minute, Reeves.”
Reeves eyes go wide, and he quickly sits back in his seat. Vain motions for the camera.
“Bring that camera in close, because I want you to look me in the eyes when you hear this, Klaus.”
The camera zooms in, showcasing a spark in Vain’s eyes that hasn’t been seen in years. He slightly chuckles.
“You and I are exactly alike.”
“Now I know what you’re thinking. There’s no way that you’re anything like ‘Vain’ Alan Wallace; he’s an arrogant douchebag, that only cares about himself. He’s a con-artist, who uses people for all that they are worth, and then discards them as soon as he’s finished with them. He’s unreliable, overbearing, and an all-around pain in the ass.”
“Pot, meet kettle.”
“We’re both out for numero uno, Klaus. Always have been. The only difference is I had the balls to let it be known what makes me tick; while you’ve gone the devious, deceitful route.”
“By now I’m sure you’re thinking, ‘the fuck is he talking about…I’m nothing like that arrogant prick. He’s used everyone in this company, and has turned on almost everyone in this company’. And you know something, Klaus? You’re right. I have used those that I’ve needed to, in order to get where I am. And I have turned on those that I felt would give me the biggest boost to my career, and set me up for the future. And I’ll admit it with every breath in my body. I’ll shout it from the rooftops. I am what I am, and the thing is, everyone knows it.”
“This entire company knows that I’m a loud-mouthed asshole, and that I think there’s nobody better. And what pisses everyone off the most is, no matter how much I may brag; no matter how much my ego rages out of control; I’ve backed up everything that I’ve said.”
“My opponents have all said the same thing over the last two years. I’m a washed-up has-been, with an out of control ego, and they are going to be the one to finally shut me up. Sad part for them…they’ve all failed in that endeavor.”
“And while they all still know that I’m going to continue running them down every chance that I get, because it’s what I do…at least they know where they stand with me.”
“Am I arrogant? Yes.”
“Will I only keep them around if they’re useful to me? Yes.”
“Will I drop them like a bad habit if that usefulness wears off? Well…ask Jase that one. If you can find him.”
“I’m in this for me, Klaus. It’s always been about Vain…just like in your subconscious, it’s always been about Klaus.”
“You just do a better job of hiding that aspect of your personality. But after all these years, it’s finally shown itself to the masses. Honestly… I think you might be worse than me, Klaus.”
“I only turned on a business associate. You turned on your best friends of fifteen years.”
“Even I think that’s a dick move.”
“You can attempt to justify it all you want, but the simple truth is, you used them to help you get back on your feet, and the first chance that you got, you severed that relationship, in a fashion much worse than I have ever done. Sure, I left a whore at the alter…but you burned your biker sweater vest. And I think that’s one of the biker trash ten commandments.”
“To be honest, since that time, I don’t think that I can call myself ‘Arrogance Personified’ any longer. Not with you as our champion. You won the biggest match of your career, and instead of taking it in stride, and being a champion that this company can be proud of, you’ve gone on a month-long odyssey of alienating everyone that you can, just because of the status that you feel you now deserve. You show no respect to your opponents, have no respect for the establishment, and through it all you are mostly disrespecting yourself. In fact, it’s been nothing but big talk from you since you won that title, Klaus. And I suspect that will continue.”
“At least until Monday, when I take it from you.”’
“You think your newfound alliance worries me, Klaus? If anyone is worried, it should be you. You’ve surrounded yourself with people that couldn’t get the job done against me. The fact that this big reveal is supposed to give me pause is fucking laughable. Because all you’ve done is allowed three leeches to attach themselves to you, and they will take great pleasure in riding your coattails to the vast successes that are ahead of you in your career. Unfortunately for all four of you, those successes won’t start until after Monday. At least you’ll have a group of people to help console you, when you realize that I am still your better.”
“Truth hurts, doesn’t it?”
“Yes, I might be an asshole, Klaus vonKnorre…but I’m the asshole that the UGWC brass knows. You? You’re the unknown asshole, and you’re not used to playing the politics that are needed from the champion. And that is the biggest reason why I will take everything that you have, and still come out victorious on Monday night.”
“I know what carrying a company feels like, Klaus. I know the pressure of it all, and what is expected of the person that is viewed as the standard-bearer of all the men and women in the back. That’s why UGWC needs me to beat you at Massive Melee. They need someone that they know will be an ambassador to the rest of the wrestling industry, drawing in fans, and luring rival competitors over to the ranks, based strictly off of wanting to go one-on-one with the greatest wrestler that UGWC has.”
“A Vain-led company will be the hottest thing in the industry, and everyone would profit from that. Even you.”
“The only people profiting from a Klaus-led company - outside of your newfound alliance - will be the Morgan’s…because after what you did to them, they will enjoy seeing you fail.”
Vain quickly rises to his feet.
“You think I’m a joke, and that’s fine. In fact, keep taking me lightly…because ultimately, the joke will be on you.”
“See ya soon, buddy.”
Vain drops the microphone and storms off the set, leaving Jason Reeves sitting there speechless.
FIN
The camera focuses on the concerned face of a young man, no more than nineteen or twenty years of age. He watches as paramedics attend the older gentleman that lies on the ground a mere ten feet from him. From the speed in which they are attempting to stabilize him for transport, this young voyeur can only assume that the older gentleman’s condition is dire. And he couldn’t have been more right.
The man’s name was Fermínio Etxebarrio (some names have been changed to protect the identities of those involved). He was 63 years of age.
And the young man that watched this poor individual take his last breath? Alan Wallace.
This was only the second day of the Pamplona encierro that Alan had chosen to be a spectator of. And he had planned on leaving the next day. But something happened to Alan when he witnessed those unfortunate events. It affected him so profoundly, that he decided right then and there to take the man’s place. He decided for the next six days, that he would run with these toro bravos, in memory of Mr. Extebarrio. For Mr. Extebarrio had so loved this sport, that he gave his life for it. And Alan found that to be very commendable.
The first five days were filled with emotion; mostly excitement and sheer terror. However, Alan thrived in this environment…the rush of adrenaline, the excitement of the cheering crowd. He knew, deep down, that those feelings were what he had been searching for all this time. He thirsted for that excitement; he needed that adrenaline rush; he yearned for the limelight.
And yet at the end of that fifth day, he found something that he yearned for just as much.
Her name was Veruzhka. And she was unlike anything he had ever seen.
They came together that evening in a torrid fashion and it lasted well into the morning. They reached the climax just as the first rocket was launched, signifying that the gates had officially opened. By the time the third and the fourth rockets were set off, they had collapsed in exhaustion, and fell asleep holding each other.

FIN
