Travis Roberts can be seen leaving the UGWC Arena after visiting the on site gym as UGWC Reporter Jason Reeves rushes up to him.
Reeves: Travis, do you have a few moments.
Travis stops and turns to him.
Travis: This is about 'The Headliners' loss to Ichabod, isn't it?
Reeves: We can certainly start there. What happened? Ichabod had almost become synonymous with losing, and now he has a victory of the current UGWC World Heavyweight Champion to his name, does that embarrass you?
Travis looks at Reeves with disgust?
Travis: Embarrass me? You should be the one feeling shame after asking such a ridiculous question. Has nobody been listening to a word Travis Roberts has been saying since winning the Championship in February? How many times have I proclaimed that we have the strongest roster 'The Blessed One' has seen in his many years in the business? That wasn't hyperbole, it was the truth, anyone is capable of beating anyone else right now, and Ichabod proved that last Monday.
Reeves: I see, even in losing you find another way to say you were right all along?
Travis: Do you think I'm stupid? I'm not trying to twist the defeat into some kind of victory for 'The Headliner', I'm just responding to your asinine suggestion that I should be embarrassed by the loss. Am I happy that I lost? Of course not, I'm the UGWC World Heavyweight Champion and attempt to prove each and every time I am out there exactly why I deserve the privilege of being this companies standard bearer.
Reeves: So what went wrong?
Travis: Apart from Ichabod bringing more to the match on Monday than me? I'm not going to try and make excuses, he was the better man last Monday and deserved his win. What is more concerning is that last week Travis Roberts challenged the entire roster to step up, because the coming months are the most important and demanding of the year, ad his opponent proved to take those words on board more than 'The Blessed One' himself. That's something to be ashamed of.
Reeves: Do you think you just didn't want to face him and dismissed him as an easy win?
Travis: Look, I know it's hard to shake a reputation you have garnered over many years, but that's just BS. I have constantly recognised the talent in this organisation, I wouldn't be as proud as I am to be the Champion if I didn't rate the roster we have at our disposal. Just because I also believe that history can often be the best indicator of what we can expect in the future does not mean I am dismissive of people. Just because I have confidence in my own abilities does not mean that I think everyone else is useless.
Reeves: But you often make out that other peoples opinions are ridiculous notions that are unthinkable.
Travis: I'm not about to apologise for having the power of conviction over my own opinions if someone challenges them. But lets not make out that 'The Headliner' is incapable of admitting when he's wrong when it's proven to him. You want the god's honest truth? 'The Blessed One' genuinely believed he had prepared enough to beat Ichabod last week, given the fact Ichabod had been nothing more than a support mechanism for Holden Orson for the past few months, there was no suggestion that he would do anything more than try and make his friend look good. Can anyone really say they expected him to decide that last Monday night was the right time to step out of Orson's shadow and pull out the kind of performance his friend should have two weeks earlier? Hell, going on last weeks evidence he's got a far greater chance of walking out of Outlast than his friend, and I challenge anyone else to truthfully say they expected that. But at the end of the day, Travis Roberts is the only one who should have contemplated it, I didn’t and I was wrong.
Reeves is shocked at hearing those words and takes a moment to realise Travis has stopped talking.
Reeves: I'm sure you're eager to move on from last week and look forward to the future. In your immediate future you will be going one on one against Gabriel Baal, the man you defeated at No Holds Barred to retain your World Heavyweight Championship.
Travis says nothing and just nods.
Reeves: I don't know if you've seen, but he has released a statement regarding your match on Monday and there are a series of interesting comments contained within. Would you like to respond to any?
Travis: Yeah, I saw the statement, and I have a number of thoughts of my own, but don't I run the risk of being dismissive and aloof if I respond from my own perspective?
Reeves: I'm not sure coming across as 'aloof' is a problem when responding to Doctor Gabriel Baal.
Travis: You make a good point, it wouldn't have stopped me anyway, what do you want to know?
Reeves: There's so much, but why don't we start with his reaction to your win at In Your Hands? He seems to take specific issue with the part Dave Rydell played in the finish.
Travis: Ah yes, and that I have been going around telling everyone who will listen that Dave had nothing to do with my victory. I can only assume that Gabriel has been self-medicating because I don't recall making any public statements on the matter. In fact the only person I have had a conversation with about it was Donovan, and that was in the privacy of our locker room.
Reeves: Would you like to address it publicly now?
Travis: There is no doubting that Dave Rydell provided me with an assist with his tomfoolery at ringside, but I do think it's a large leap to believe Holden had the match wrapped up had he not blundered into him like a blind orangutan. If you recall Holden had moments earlier kicked out of a White Out at the last second and hadn't actually succeeded in any offense prior to Rydell underwhelming the world with his reveal. I know the facts tend to get in the way of an exciting story, but I warn you that may become a trend today.
Reeves: So you're saying you don't believe Orson was .03 seconds away from beating you?
Travis: At one point he was, but I don't recall anyone but Travis Roberts kicking out of Black, and as I said Holden did nothing more after that moment than kick out of my finisher and lose all sense of ring awareness. Anyone who says they know which way that match would have gone if Rydell had not shown up is talking crap.
Jason Reeves shrugs his shoulders and tilts his head to the side as if to say 'fair enough'.
Reeves: A large theme that emanates from his statement is that of your apathy for competing at Synergy, that you deem it somewhat below you, how do you feel about that?
Travis: As I said earlier it's hard to shake an image that is so ingrained In peoples minds, especially if those people don't pay attention. That may have been true of 'The Headliner' in years past, but especially since becoming UGWC World Heavyweight Champion I've done everything in my power to show exactly why I can be considered the best. Have I been frustrated with numerous seemingly thrown together Cooperative Matches I have been placed in? Sure, but I've done all I can to work with whoever my partner is. Have people already forgotten how close 'The Blessed One' came to being Cooperative Champion with Jet Somers? That team didn't become a surprisingly powerful unit because Travis Roberts spent the weeks going up to WrestleStock giving less than he could.
Reeves: Would you agree with Baal's assertion that no-one could ever accuse him of giving any less than his all week in week out?
Travis: Should we ignore the month of May when we address that? You know, when he was absent after losing to 'The Headliner'? When he spent an entire month licking his wounds and even sent a proxy into the Massive Melee. Of course Travis Roberts misses the occasional show, but it's been a long time since he vanished into the shadows for so long after being soundly beaten. Of course Baal could claim he was merely recuperating after a brutal match, but I was in the very same match and managed to compete throughout that month.
But if we do somehow ignore that contradiction I won't deny that he does indeed bring his all every time he is scheduled to compete, it's just a pity that thus far his 'all' just really isn't that impressive and has become relatively predictable. It's staggering to think that after only 8 months in the industry he seems to have reached his peak. The Gabriel Baal that so spectacularly overestimated his ability to defeat Eden Morgan is the same person that spectacularly overestimated his ability to beat me back in May. The only difference is he's now aligned with someone who is very well placed to overshadow him. It's a staggering lack of progress ,and for a man who is so well educated, he doesn't seem to learn his lessons very well. So, sure, I'll admit he brings it all every week, it's just a shame his all isn’t enough.
Reeves: He also states that beating you on Synergy means nothing, because you lose so often, because of your already mentioned apathy for the weekly show.
Travis: Ok, for a start, if we entertain the fact that I 'don't care' about Synergy and Baal does, what does it say about him that the two of us have a very comparable set of results on that show since I claimed the UGWC World Heavyweight Championship in February? If he's giving it everything and I'm just sitting back and relaxing all month shouldn’t he have a far superior record if he's as good as he thinks he is?
But ignoring that, isn’t saying that beating me on Synergy this week, doing exactly what he accuses me of doing? Believe me, it is, because it's what I used to do all the time, and despite what some think I have ceased to be that person, there's no point in lowering expectations when you're the World Champion.
Moreover to claim that Ichabod gained nothing from is win last week is just ignorant. At the end of this month we walk into Outlast, and Ichabod just stamped his name down as one of the men to watch in that match. In comparison Holden's lackluster showing against Donovan and Rydell will lead to people questioning whether he has the consistency required to make it all the way to the end. Of course we've still got three Synergy's for each man to change or enhance those opinions, but Ichabod's win was in no way without it's reward.
I'm no psychiatrist, but if Gabriel Baal really believes he has nothing to win and everything to lose going into this match, we may have discovered the cause of his inability to fulfill the potential his first few months promised. That statement is far more applicable to the World Heavyweight Champion, everyone expects him to be the best, to beat all comers, but no-one lauds him when he does, but they will jump on him and accuse him of not caring when he loses. Baal will be treated as conquering hero if he rises to the occasion and still loses, just look at Holden. If he wins, he's instantly put down his marker for Outlast, the fact Baal doesn’t recognise that means he is either tying to protect himself in the event of a defeat, or he's just unbelievably stupid.
Reeves: He's also the latest person to question the integrity of your title reign, claiming you've faced weak opponents and your reign has never truly been threatened.
Travis: Isn't this getting boring yet? How many times do I have to point out that every person who has had a shot at this title has earnt it, that no-one in UGWC can be taken lightly and anyone who gets a shot is a threat? And my reign has been threatened more times than any other champion in UGWC's history, no-one has defended this title on as many occasions as I have.
I saw that he thinks that only he and Holden were significant threats to me? I accept you could possibly dismiss Cynric the Crusader as a legitimate Championship contender, but didn't he defeat Baal the week directly after failing to capture the World heavyweight Championship and weeks before Baal proved he also couldn't wrestle the belt away from me? So I'd suggest Cynric was just as valid a challenger as Gabriel.
As for Baal being a challenge, he certainly gave me a significant run for my money, but given he then took the entire month off afterwards it seemed he almost crippled himself doing so. Travis Roberts on the other hand was capable of competing the very next night, so it seems it was a bigger challenge for the Doctor than it was for 'The Headliner'.
So before he dismisses the efforts of people that have thrown me off of aircraft carriers and resurrected their careers by reminding everyone why they are legends in our industry when facing me, he might want to consider how the actual facts make him look.
Of course he'll excuse his own loss as happening because he was a rookie of four months, asking everyone to ignore the fact he had a successful collegiate wrestling career and used his considerable resources to train for an entire year before entering UGWC. It's hardly the background of your average 'rookie' is it? And the good Doctor accuses me of being a fraud!
Reeves: He finished his statement by saying you’re a good champion, but you'll never be great, and don't deserve to be, before we end this, can I ask you for a response to that?
Travis smirks.
Travis: I'm sorry if I sound dismissive but Gabriel Baal's is one of the last opinions I consider valid. I think I've given enough examples of how flawed his reasoning skills are, facts don't seem to be important to the good Doctor, like your average climate change denier it's dangerous to give them anything but a swift rebuttal before turning to more important matters, but unfortunately he is my opponent this week so I have to give him some credence.
It's clear to me Gabriel is confused about a great number of things not least just how Travis Roberts has managed to be UGWC World Heavyweight Champion for so long, when his own success rate is hit and miss at best. Without looking at himself he reaches for wild conspiracies and strawman opinions to make himself feel better, and he never actually looks at the obvious facts in front of him.
Has he ever considered the reason that this reign has gone on for so long is because, unlike the vast majority of this roster, this is all I care about? Sure people can criticise 'The Headliner' for the way he approaches the business, but not a single person can say that UGWC and everything that goes on within it is not where my focus is.
I'm not spending the majority of my time trying to get into Eden Morgan's underwear, nor am I distracting myself with some convoluted revenge plot, or consumed by identity or daddy issues, I'm not forming ill-advised alliances, or concerning myself with a secret society full of tired clichés. I may be considered monotonous due to only concentrating on this industry rather than sex, business or the occult, but I was under the impression UGWC was a wrestling show not a Lifetime TV Movie. Being the UGWC World Heavyweight Champion is my only focus, it's all I care about, and that’s why it still remains around my waist, that’s why no-one has been able to take it from me.
So many others spend at least half their time concentrating their efforts on inane crap that doesn't have any bearing on what we do inside the ring, and yet some people are somehow surprised that the one person that dedicates everything he does to this industry sits at the top of it? I'm not sure what the psychiatric term for such blissful ignorance is, but 'The Blessed One' considers anyone who conforms to such a view as a window licker of the highest order, even if they obtained a PhD.
Reeves: Finally, Baal challenged you to make your match on Monday a match worth having, any thoughts?
Travis: This match was always worth having, it's Gabriel Baal's chance to show he actually can hang with the top names in this industry, something he has failed to do on previous occasions. For Travis Roberts it's a chance to rebound from his loss last week, and remind everyone going into Outlast just why 'The Blessed One' is the man to beat. If Baal really thinks this match has no stakes it's probably best for him to focus more on his other endeavors.
Reeves: Thanks for your time, Travis.
Travis nods and walks off screen as the interview comes to an end.
Reeves: Travis, do you have a few moments.
Travis stops and turns to him.
Travis: This is about 'The Headliners' loss to Ichabod, isn't it?
