Victoria Jensen walks into the living room of ‘The Blessed One’ and finds him sat on the sofa staring at a white piece of card, as she walks closer she stops in her tracks as she sees the UGWC World Heavyweight Champion’s face in detail.
Vix: Travis, are you crying?
Travis looks up abruptly and wipes his eyes, it is clear that he had not noticed Vix enter the room.
Travis: Um...no…I was…
‘The Headliner’ tries to contain his emotions but he is fighting a losing battle and he begins to tremble. Vix moves quickly and is soon beside him, wrapping her arms around him tenderly as his head sinks into her shoulder and his tears flow once more.
It’s night time now and Travis and Vix sit in the lowlight of his kitchen, across the counter from one another with three empty bottles and a freshly opened bottle of red wine between them. They are looking through a series of old photos.
Vix: Why have you never spoken about her before?
Travis: This is not an industry that is kind to the families of those within it, I thought it wise to keep them completely separate.
Vix: Isn’t that a bit paranoid?
Travis: You saw what happened to your sister when she dated me, what Eden Morgan put her through, do you really think I’m paranoid?
Vix: I guess not, but I’m not sure anyone would have gone after your Aunt.
Travis: I couldn’t risk it. You don’t understand, she was my salvation, without her I dread to think what I would have become, she saved me. I don’t speak about my upbringing to anyone, it’s too painful to do so, but she was the only shining light in my life for many years. She had no expectations of me, she made no demands, she asked nothing of me than to be true to myself. Had anything ever happened to her due to my choices I could never have forgiven myself.
They sit in silence for a few minutes, each sipping from their glasses of wine before Vix raises her head with a look of realisation upon it.
Vix: Hang on! Is that where you went when you claimed to be going on your post PPV yoga retreats?
Travis smiles.
Vix: I knew it! You do not have the mentality or disposition for Yoga.
Travis: To be fair she always loved mindfulness and yoga, and always wanted me to try.
Vix: You could have just told us, Travis.
Travis: You know I couldn’t. You know this industry, no matter how close you are to someone, no matter how well you work together and how much trust you have in one another, one day even the most well-oiled machine of friendship will break down. It’s not that I didn’t trust you all, I just couldn’t take that risk with her.
Vix: So are you going to the funeral?
Travis: Of course, and it will be tough.
Vix: I can come if you need some support.
Travis smiles softly at Vix.
Travis: I appreciate that, but I kept her away from this business all her life, I’d like to keep it that way as I say my goodbyes. Besides it’s on her ranch in Arizona, it’s where most of my memories with her are from, and as painful as it will be I need to face this on my own. Luckily it’s highly unlikely my mother will be there, otherwise my answer might have been different.
Vix: Why’s that?
Travis: Because I’m sure in the time you’ve spent with Somers he’s taught you the Anaconda, and the UGWC World Heavyweight Champion can’t be seen to choke out his own mother, can he?
Vix: Yeah, that wouldn’t be good.
They sit in silence for a little longer before Travis speaks again.
Travis: Just do one thing for me.
Vix: Anything.
Travis: Don’t tell anyone else.
Rain whips down in the middle of the desert, it is rare that it will rain here, but when it does it falls with ferocity. The sun has gone down, the mourners have left and Travis stands in the middle of a dusty yard as the rain pours down on him. He looks up at the sky and shouts to the heavens above.
Travis: What did she ever do to deserve this? She was a good woman! She helped those around her, she never turned her back on anyone, she even forgave those who had maliciously damaged her, and this is what she gets? She’d never asked for anything, never wanted to be rich, never wanted to be famous, all she wanted was to make people happy, to make them smile and feel good about themselves! And this is how it ends, a drunk driver? Is this a sick joke?
Is this because of what I have done in my past? Is this because I refuse to acknowledge a higher power? Is this somethings way of trying to make me take notice? Was her death a way to punish me? If she was here she’d chastise me for being an egotistical fool, she’d point out the world does not behave in a predictable manner, and I know she’d defend what just happened as the natural order of things! She would forgive you and would convince me to do the same! But she’s not here, no the feckless asshole in the pickup you sent made sure of that, so I shall not forgive, nor shall I forget!
She made me a better person, she opened my eyes to how to treat others, and even when I grew bitter and selfish after the coma, she never gave up trying to help me heal and to see the world as a positive place full of possibility and wonder.
This past year she was so happy, because I was happy, because my life had been enriched with experiences beyond my wildest dreams. And it was because of her, she was the reason I had found my place in the world, and rather than using my skills to demean and belittle I tried to use them to portray endeavour and fortitude. And her thanks for showing me a ‘better’ way? Death at the hands of a redneck with a drinking problem.
She brought stability, she brought a reliability to my life that was lacking everywhere else, and I knew I had to make her proud. But now you have taken her away all that is left is uncertainty and desperation, you have taken my world and ripped it apart at the seams. I do not know what comes next, will I find that this chaos is something positive, or will I be unable to cope without my rock of steadiness? Whatever the answer it is, you are the reason for it.
She may have forgiven.
I never will!
The wind and the rain whip around ‘The Blessed One’ as he hangs his head low and balls his fists together tightly by his sides.
Infinity, an apt name for the event in UGWC’s calendar where the possibilities beyond are of such great numbers they are hard to comprehend. Infinity is when the pieces for the following year start to slip into place, but in the month before we are faced with a blank canvas, who knows what to expect? The possibilities are indeed infinite.
In 2011 The Human Resources Department formed and Jet Somers defended the World Heavyweight Championship. Both were integral to UGWC’s first full year being successful, and the foundations being set for many years to come.
In 2012 The Year of Fear was born when Phrixus Deimos claimed the World Heavyweight Championship in the Global Challenge, to some spectators this was a surprise. But it was just the first surprise of a year that saw title reigns from moss Edwards and Ezekiel Pax, not to mention the underwhelming return of Randy Boolzian.
In 2013 a depleted roster saw Zane Scott win the Global Challenge, and Jet Somers once again became World Heavyweight Champion. Before the event there were worries UGWC was on its knees. By the end of the year Eden Morgan, ‘The Drunken Buzzsaw’ Chaos, Cypress Morgan and Alan ‘Vain’ Wallace had made their debuts in UGWC and played integral roles in the Horizons of that year. Zane Scott dominated throughout much of the year in a program with Eden Morgan that is still one of the companies most talked about Angles
In 2014 ‘The Blessed One’ Travis Roberts won the Global Challenge, and Donovan Hastings became Champion as The Puppet Masters formed. That night a group formed that would play a major role in everything that happened throughout the year, including leading to the Vigilante Match between Travis Roberts and Donovan Hastings, recently voted the greatest match in Horizons’ storied history.
In 2015 Phrixus Deimos once again won the Challenge and KvK started his ill-fated run with the Championship. Despite his best efforts later in the year not even Alan ‘Vain’ Wallace’s talents could help the company recover from such an inauspicious start. Horizons that year, despite claiming to have the fans favourite Main Event, struggled to fill its card, leading to matches between Larry and El Mucho Gordo, a blood feud between Zane Scott and Travis Pierce that nobody wanted to see, Donovan Hastings and Dave Rydell battling a feud more suited to a 1980’s screwball comedy than the flagship show of the year, and Eden Morgan beating someone’s side character.
In 2016 we saw Gabrielle Baal stun the world by winning the Global Challenge in his first month, and ‘The Headliner’ finally returned to the top of the mountain. In the year that proceeded Travis Roberts broke records and established the UGWC World Heavyweight Championship as the most coveted prize in the industry, Gabrielle Baal was involved in some of the hottest angles of the year, and the tenth anniversary of Horizons was one of the greatest spectacles UGWC has ever witnessed.
Infinity 2017, how will we look back on this at the end of year? When Horizons is upon us will we view this night as the beginning of something spectacular, or the dawn of destitution? Will we see ‘The Blessed One’ Travis Roberts continue his incredible run that has seen UGWC climb to heights that have attracted big names to risk their reputations to make a name for themselves here? Or will we see the Engine of Chaos finally make good on a promise they made half a year ago and have failed to fulfil on more than one occasion, and unleash their brand of ‘Chaos’ upon us all many months after the ship has already sailed? Or will the weakness the entire world sees within them open the door to someone else, someone un known, to lead UGWC in to an unpredictable 2017?
No-one can foresee the future, but generally looking at the past gives us a good idea of what may happen going forward. Reliability or unfulfilled promise is what we face this time round.
