You got embarrassed.
It’s that simple. You were a fly and you got caught in a spider’s web.
It isn’t going to be the last time.
Vidas: En qué puedo servirle, Señor Hastings?
Hastings: I’m going to ignore whatever nonsense that was. We need to talk about Eden Morgan.
It’s hunt or be hunted.
Vidas: What about her?
Hastings: You thought you could have this big “match of respect” or whatever. I think she just showed you what she really thinks of that.
She thinks you’re a fool.
Vidas: Because of the Fall of Eden? No, mi amigo, that was nothing more that a competitor making a statement.
Hastings: The statement you should be hearing is that Eden Morgan has no respect for you. None at all. Everything you need to know, she told you when she cashed-in for this match. Do you know how long Eden sat on that purse of hers? She won most of it at Sin City three years ago. She could have had title shot after title shot by now. But no, she didn’t take them. She didn’t cash in on Vain. She didn’t cash in on Travis. She opted out of a tournament that was supposed to award the winner a title shot. What does she end up doing? She cashes in on you. It wasn’t to have a match of respect. It was because she has no respect for you at all. She thinks you’re a pushover. She is a vulture who spots easy prey, a shark that smells blood in the water.
Yours.
Vidas: And what if she is. Why do you care?
Hastings: Because you are now part of a lineage of great champions. Three years ago I was champion for over two hundred days. Two years ago Vain dominated everyone. Last year Travis had the greatest reign in history. We’re not going to follow that up with two crappy reigns in a row.
Vidas: Two?
Do I stutter?
Hastings: Two. Dos. Zwei. Yours, and Eden’s, because that is what is going to happen when she beats you. You’ll be champ for a month, and so will she, because that’s what she does. Don’t get me wrong, Eden Morgan is good at winning titles. She is shit at keeping them. That title is too important, the standard that Travis set is too high, for that legacy to be ruined by you and her. Do you comprendstando that?
Vidas: Si perro...estoy empanzando.
...whatever.
Hastings: Let me make this perfectly clear to you. You’re going to honor the legacy we’ve set before you. Or I’ll do it for you.
It’s inevitable.
Grey Coppi sits in his chair on his set with Donovan seated across from him.
Coppi: Welcome back to Making Coppis, I’m your host, Grey Coppi, and we continue with the Lord of Pain-
Hastings: The True King of UltraViolence.
Coppi: The Lord of Pain and the True King of UltraViolence, Donovan Hastings. Lord Hastings, we’ve already touched on your Monarchy of Anarchy tournament match against GI at CW: Isolation on Sunday, now I’d like to shift the focus to the following night at Rise or Fall, when you will face four others in the Ascension Match.
Hastings: How appropo it is, wouldn’t you say? An Ascension Match, for the Lord, the King, who is on his way to ascending back to his throne? It sounds like destiny to me. There is no question, this is the match I am supposed to be in.
Coppi: You’re making reference to the speculation that Vain might have selected you as a partner against the Engine of Chaos in the Altitude O Match for the Cooperative Championship, but Vain went instead with his traditional partner, Killian King.
Hastings: We aren’t here to talk about Altitude O. We’re here to talk about the Ascension Match. It’s an eclectic field of opponents, there is no denying that. A few moments ago we were talking about my crowning as the True King of Ultraviolence. When I underscored my claim to be the Lord-Chief of Global Impact Wrestling, it was at the expense of Gabrielle Montgomery. Again, how appropo, Gabby returns to take part in my latest ascension. I welcome her return, she comes again to herald my rise.
Grey stares at Donovan, his mouth agape for a moment.
Hastings: What?
Coppi: Nothing. The Ascension Match originated in the Outsider Wrestling Federation, and CJ Wylde, the veteran of OWF, is one of your opponents. Does this put you at a disadvantage?
Hastings: Did Wylde win an Ascension Match?
Coppi: No.
Hastings: Has he been IN an Ascension Match?
Coppi: Not that I know of.
Hastings: Then who cares? That makes him just another entrant in the match, which is appropriate because he’s just another member of the roster here now. I’m not going to harp about OWF. That’s Jet’s schtick, and the rest of us should be better than that. At Infinity, CJ Wylde almost became the UGWC World Heavyweight Champion. That’s what needs to be focused on here. CJ Wylde has had his clear issues with Killian these past few weeks. He’s alright in my book. Clearly he makes good choices, we’ll see if that continues when he faces the Lord and King.
Coppi: You’ll also be facing a long-time nemesis of yours, Phrixus Deimos.
Hastings: Are you trying to back-door me into a rundown? The Lord and King isn’t so small as to do a paltry opponent rundown.
Coppi: Um.
Hastings: Oh, whatever, we’re halfway done. Fear is a schmuck that cost us the match at Infinity because he’s past his prime, and I haven’t heard of the other wench in this match but I don’t much care at this point. You’ve filmed two segments with me here and I deserve a medal of valor for paying attention to you as long as I have. If I was Vain I’d have adopted a new moniker based on this alone.
Coppi: Right, Vain, he might make a good guest…
Hastings: It’s this simple. Monarchy of Anarchy. Ascension. Inevitable. Done.
Coppi: Lord Hastings, I thank you for your time…
Peterson: You do know that Christmas was almost three months ago.
Hastings: Well that’s obviously why the decorations have to come down, isn’t it?
Owen is most of the way up a ladder that leans against the side of Donovan’s home, attempting to detach and take down Christmas lights.
Hastings: It’s concerning that you took this long to take them down, to be perfectly frank with you.
Peterson: You said we should just leave them up for next year.
Hastings: I say a lot of things. You’re supposed to know which ones to listen to.
Owen grumbles and tugs on a string of lights that appears to be caught in the siding. He nearly loses his balance on the ladder, but manages to steady himself.
Peterson: Would it kill you to come up here and help?
Hastings: Probably not.
Owen pauses, and after a moment stares down at him.
Hastings: I have to climb a ladder contraption on Monday, why do I want to do it today?
Owen grumbles again and resumes work.
Hastings: The pillars that hold everything up are collapsing. These last couple years I’ve been able to take a breather, to feel assured that the burden is being carried by others that can handle it, but that isn’t the case anymore. Travis has fallen. Vain has chosen to go backwards and waste his time with Killian again. I’m supposed to put my faith in Mil Vidas, someone who is already bleeding while the vulture that is Eden circles and readies to strike?
Donovan shakes his head.
Hastings: Maybe Vidas goes to Rise or Fall and proves he can handle it. I can’t take that chance. This is the time that my trials start anew. It’s my time to rise.
