DECEMBER 4, 2017 - BEFORE SYNERGY
As Dave Rydell sets himself at a table, he picks up a remote which turns on the camera.
“Another week, another Synergy in the books. Why was that match made? Nobody cares. It was chance for the Court to do court things. Now, I am one week away from facing an enemy I have had for over a decade; since my days in the UWF, LWF, and now here. This man has cost me so much in my time as a performer. During the reboot of the LWF, the 2.0, Fear deemed it necessary to ensure I didn’t win the Tag Titles with CoolJ against him and Donovan Hastings.
My, oh my, how our worlds continue to intertwine. However, many have questioned this challenge I put before you. Allow me to enlighten the world. June 9, 2008. I battled Psiko in a LWF Cross-Hemisphere Title match for the ages. One of the greatest nights of my life; considering I beat him for the LWF Title once and had it ripped away on a technicality. Regardless, I beat him. However, you took something from me Fear. You took a chance from me. A chance for me to potentially hold the greatest reign as Cross-Hemisphere Champion. To be the best champion that that title has ever seen. Take a moment, and watch this.
***** Red Fusion turns around as Psiko charges, but Fusion catches him in a spinebuster. Red Fusion goes to bounce off the ropes, but Fear is at ringside and he pulls down the top rope, and Fusion crashes at ringside!
Fear grins as he stands over Red Fusion, who is holding his leg in pain…*****
That’s all that needs to be shown. Let’s fast forward.
*****“By_Myslf” hits to a mighty pop, and Lock walks out to the stage, his trenchcoat billowing slightly. Over his shoulder he wears the Cross-Hemisphere Title, and he comes down the ramp and makes his way to the ring.
Lock climbs into the ring and gets a microphone for himself.
Lock: Last week, we saw what was simply a thrilling main event match, a match for this title I have over my shoulder, between the defending champion Psiko, and the challenger Red Fusion. I think we were all impressed by the heart shown by Fusion in his victory, and this was even evidenced by the respect shown to him by Psiko after the match. However, Red Fusion suffered an injury in the match when he fell out of the ring.
Lock: These injuries have put Red Fusion on the shelf for hopefully only a couple months, but perhaps indefinitely. As a result, he will obviously not be able to defend the championship this Sunday at Lord of the Ring, and I have therefore stripped Red Fusion of the championship, effective earlier today. The scheduled Fatal Fourway for Sunday is now a three way Ladder Match for the vacant championship, and we will see two of those competitors in action, right…now!*****
So, Fear. Thank you. Thank you for giving me this motivation.
I’ll be real. It took a while for this to truly sink in but after the year that I’ve had…all of the bullshit, the ups and downs…this only seemed right we settle the debt at Horizons.”
Fade out.
DECEMBER 7, 2017 - O’MALLEY’S BAR
Fading in we see Dave Rydell staring at a plate of food with a glass of Lagavulin whiskey in front of him. Michelle walks up.
Michelle: Is everything ok?
Dave: It’s fine. Hey, December 12, are you free?
Michelle: I am.
Dave: Let’s have dinner. You and me.
Michelle: Are you sure? You’re my boss.
Dave: I don’t care. But let’s do that. And until then, we just disconnect. I’ve got some things working right now and I need to focus. But on the 12th, I’m all yours.
Michelle: That’s kind of odd, but sure…
Before Michelle can finish, The door swings open. She looks, and in walks Ed Leonard. He sits next to Dave.
Ed: Michelle, please give us a few minutes alone.
Michelle: You got it.
Ed: Dave.
Dave: I don’t want to hear it. I know what I’m doing.
Ed: I know you do.
Dave: So then what is this about?
Ed: Nothing. I just wanted to come and hang out.
Dave: You don’t hang out. You have a motive, always.
Ed: While true, I jus- you know what. No. You and Fear have a storied rivalry. I’ve been there for literally all of it. This is going to make or break you. So you need to perform. I know you can. But something has been holding you back. And that’s been your focus on the World Title, which you are not ready for in any way shape or form.
Dave: I know.
Ed: So what’s the plan?
Dave: There’s not always going to be a plan, Ed. Fear sees plans and destroys them 5 steps ahead. And I know how to stop him. And I’m going to stop him.
Ed: Stop him? Are you trying to end his career?
Dave: No. But I need this win to be relevant.
Ed: No you don’t. This is your problem. You always think the next big win is going to make you relevant again. It isn’t about the wins. Dave, if I may, your focus is so scattershot it is unreal. You need to focus in on your abilities. You need to focus on what makes you worthy of being in this company. You need to focus on what makes you a real competitor. The wins will come after that.
Dave sits there for a minute, pondering.
Ed: I’m going to leave. You have a lot to think about. Please, focus on the right thing. Otherwise, even getting the win will not be enough. Case and point, you pinned Alan Wallace at Outlast. But what have you done since then? Nothing. You’ve been beaten, thrown around, and back to being a joke. So focus on your abilities. You have them. We have seen them. You just pick and choose when to let them show.
Ed pauses.
Ed: Horizons is the time to show them.
Ed gets up, pats Dave on the shoulder.
Ed: I won’t be there this time. You’re on your own until you can figure that out.
Ed walks out while Dave stares at his glass of whiskey. Fade out.
DECEMBER 10, 2017 - UNDISCLOSED LOCATION
Dave Rydell is sitting in a chair in a dark room with a single overhead light shining down. His face, shrouded by the shadows of his face blocking the light.
“Fear, you and I crossed paths first at Meltdown 2003. You defeated me in a tables match. You won my UWF Global Championship and unified it with the Cross Hemisphere Title. Years later, you destroyed me. You ruined me. You broke my leg and forced me to relinquish the one title I cherish more than anything. Until now. I cherish nothing more than this moment you and I will have. Horizons. The biggest spectacle in this company.
You and I have a showdown for the ages and while not a lot of people understand this history, it was meant to be. I have fought tooth and nail, sometimes half assed it, to try and I get my hands on the UGWC World Title. Right now, none of that matters. Right now, all that matters is beating you. Righting all of the wrongs that you have put me through.
Many have asked me why I picked you as my number one pick for Outlast. Your resume speaks for itself. You are going to go down in history as a legend and I thoroughly applaud your illustrious career. However, you have been a turncoat more times than one can count. Does the name, Alan Fernandez ring a bell? Psiko? Firestar? You destroyed one of the greatest factions in wrestling history with your tactics. You all were an inspiration to the newcomers, such as myself, back when UWF merged with the LWF.
And right now, you have nothing. You were revered, feared, and taken seriously. However, now that you appear on the marquee next to me, you are a joke. Why? Because I am a joke. I’ve tried to fix it. I can’t. So what I need to do is keep fighting. Accept that I am nothing but a bottomless pit of humor for the rest of the company. Even Alan Wallace. I started to turn the tables at Outlast with him, but I mucked it all up on Synergy. It’s fine. It is what it is. Life will still go on.
The point is, Fear, you are a mastermind. You have done literally everything there is to do in this company and this business. You have title reign upon title reign. You have won the Melee, you have defeated legends, you have become a grand slam champion in places. So, at Horizons, the only thing that will give me solace is beating you. Pinning you, 1, 2, 3. Watching your body lay on the mat while I raise my arms in victory.”
Dave pauses for a moment and laughs.
“A joke. That’s what you and I are now. We are jokes. Our resumes do not matter. Our history does not matter to anyone. The only thing that matters is where we go from here. Horizons, old friend, is the future for us.
A lot of this is going to come down to passion. Passion like your former protege has to win the big one again. He is willing to put his career on the line for it. I’m not at that point. You aren’t at that point. It clearly doesn’t mean that much to us until we are ready to do so. Ready to give it all up in exchange for a shot. One day our careers will end, though. And on that day, this match between you and I will be in the highlights. I know this because I promise you I am going to bring you everything I have. I am not going to disappoint. Win or lose, this match will steal the show. This match will set the tone for the night.
I don’t fault you for your actions in the past, Fear. You did what you thought best for your career, I hope. Or you just did it because you’re an asshole. And you just want to watch the world burn. Regardless, the jokes end. You will no longer be a joke after Horizons. I will no longer be a joke after Horizons. We may be bloodied and battered and broken, but dammit, we won’t be jokes anymore.
At Horizons, I will be killing the joke.”
End.
