“Now just wait,” says Zane, “I understand you stepping back, taking this new position. I respect it and your reasons for it, I really do. You have my complete support...but you have to give me a real partner.”
“I just did,” says Donovan, nodding a second time towards the cardboard cut-out.
“This isn’t a partner.” Zane shakes his head.
“You’re right,” Donovan smiles. “It’s so much more. It will strike fear into the hearts of those that would oppose you, a reminder of the true challenge that is set against them, the full glory of the Pain and Paradox.”
“You’re asking me to defend the Co-Op titles in a handicap match.”
“Zane,” says Donovan calmly as he puts his hand on his shoulder. “Trust me.”
February
“I’m not asking Larry to wear that,” says Zane with a clear element of disbelief.
“You don’t have to,” replies Donovan with a smile. “I already made the necessary arrangements.”
“He’ll get hurt!” protests Zane.
“Do you really think I would put your Owen in real jeopardy?” asks Donovan, puzzled.
“I suppose not,” concedes Zane. “But still, I’m the World Heavyweight Champion-”
“The Undisputed Triple Champion,” interrupts Donovan.
“Sure, and you have me facing the Court in basically a three-on-one handicap match. This is the Court. Misguided as they may be, they’re dangerous.”
“You’re hardly alone,” chides Donovan, “you’ve got your championship partner by your side!”
“Right,” says Zane, somewhat defeated as he looks as Fauxovan Hasteboard.
“Zane,” says Donovan calmly as he puts his hand on his shoulder. “Trust me.”
April
“You’re serious about this? Three opponents in a Chain Match?” Zane folds his arms as he glares.
“You think you can’t handle it?” asks Donovan with surprise.
“I didn’t say that. It just seems like the odds keep getting stacked higher and higher against me.”
“The Lord gives us nothing we cannot handle,” replies Donovan with a smile. “Besides, you’re becoming the true face of this company. A hero to children everywhere. You’re inspiring them to stand up against adversity and overcome the odds in their own lives.”
“I suppose,” allows Zane.
“Zane,” says Donovan calmly as he puts his hand on his shoulder. “Trust me.”
Outlast
“t's fine, Donovan,” says Zane with acceptance. “Sometimes things don't work out. There will be another day.”
“No, TODAY,” insists Donovan. “The REDUX!!!!! is destined to happen TONIGHT! I'm going to take care of everything, don't worry about it. I can't do anything about a decision a referee has already made, but justice will prevail.”
“Listen, I can be at peace with it,” says Zane as he shakes his head. “Tonight isn't my night. I don't need you do anything.”
“Zane,” says Donovan as he calmly puts his hand on his shoulder. “I need you to trust me.”
Later that night…
Guerilla Position
“I’m getting Baal out of there,” says Donovan with determination before turning to look at Zane. “Then I’ll introduce you and bring you down.”
“You don’t need to do this,” says Zane calmly. “I’m really okay.”
“Zane,” says Donovan as he calmly puts his hand on his shoulder, “for the last time…trust me.”
“I do.”
Synergy.
Kenzi Grey hesitates, unsure of what to make of this.
Go ahead. Go ahead, do it.
Kenzi lifts Zane into a suplex, and rolls right to her feet.
More. Keep coming.
Kenzi hesitates, and she backs away.
No. Don’t stop now. You can’t stop now.
A tag is made to Roxy Cotton.
Yes. She will do it. She will give me what I deserve.
Roxy and Sarah make a series of tags, delivering a brutal beating to Zane, each trying to outdo the other.
Keep coming, don’t stop. I deserve this. I need this.
One of them has walked away. That’s how worthless I am, not even worth Vaughn getting her hands dirty. Treat me like I don’t deserve even a kick to the curb. Maybe that’s all I’m worth, just a piece of trash to be thrown away, discarded.
He planned all of this, right from the start. Our partnership, our budding friendship. Our surprising common ground. He gave me something to trust, something to believe in, gave me something to lose...and took it away. He knew just how to hurt me, knew just how to destroy me.
He’s no fool. I know that. I’ve always known that. So why did I fall for this anyway?
It’s because I know I deserve this. I’ve always deserved this.
A double brainbuster, and it is over.
It wasn’t enough.
After Synergy.
Jason Reeves runs up behind Zane as he gingerly walks through the halls of the UGWC Arena. Zane is hunched ever so slightly, there is a hitch in his walk caused by a limp. His right hand holds a rib.
“Zane!” calls Reeves. “Can we get a quick word?”
Zane does not stop, but it doesn’t matter. Reeves can keep up with him with ease, and Jason Reeves is never one to let anything, certainly not common sense or decency, stand in the way of a possible story.
“You’re just one week away from Battleground, are you in any shape to compete?”
Zane doesn’t acknowledge him, and merely saunters ahead.
“This might be one of the most competitive fields in history, after the beatings you’ve taken these past couple weeks, do you really stand a chance against a hungry talent like Kem Dynamo, one of the top young rising stars in UGWC today? Or what about Konrad Raab, you two had a real barnburner last month on Synergy, he really seemed to impress you!”
It’s possible Zane hasn’t even realized that Reeves is there, as he lurches forward.
“You’ll be facing the new Chaos Champion in one of the most violent matches in UGWC, does Bordy have the advantage in Battleground? What about Travis Pierce and Phrixus Deimos, two of your significant rivals in your career? Maybe some revenge against Deimos, after he was basically proven right all along, and has been seemingly doing Director Hastings’ bidding against you?”
Zane stops, his hand falling to his side, and slowly forming a fist. Reeves brightens with delight.
“Can you assure your fans that you’re going to be ready next week for Battleground? Is there hope that we’ll see Zane Scott in the main event of Horizons?”
Zane does not react.
“Or would you use the opportunity to seek justice against Donovan Hastings?”
Zane stands upright, his fist clenched just a bit tighter. He continues his walk ahead.
His limp is gone.
Moments Later
Northwestern Memorial Hospital
Larry sits up sharply in bed, his eyes wide with excitement. He points emphatically at the screen in front of him.
“Did you see that?” he exclaims. “Did you see it!?!”
“He’s ready,” notes Spyder.
“Now just wait,” says Zane, “I understand you stepping back, taking this new position. I respect it and your reasons for it, I really do. You have my complete support...but you have to give me a real partner.”
