You snap back to consciousness in a room that you don’t remember entering. The fog slowly clears from your head and the darkness slowly recedes from your vision. At first you’re confused. The last thing that you remember was exiting a restaurant after grabbing take out. You remember walking down the sidewalk on the clear and hot summer day. You remember the joy that your full stomach brought. You remember reaching your car. You remember digging the key fob out of your pocket and pressing the button. You remember the locks disengaging. Then…
Then what?
You remember the locks disengaging.
Then what?
You try to remember. You sit there, trapped a mysterious room that you only just suddenly found yourself in. You try to push the fog from your mind. After all, it shouldn’t be so difficult to remember what happened a mere few hours ago.
Yet it is.
And was it really a few hours ago?
You find that you simply don’t know.
Why can’t you remember?
You heard your car unlock. You should remember getting in. You should remember sitting down, buckling in and starting the engine. You should remember that. But you don’t. You don’t remember. Two words ring in your head.
“Then what”?
...
You feel your stomach drop out when the answer hits you.
Then nothing.
Your confusion slowly morphs into concern. You try to stand up, but your legs won’t move. You order your arms to push off, but nothing happens. You look down and discover much to your trepidation that you’re tied to a chair. Or, more accurately, zip restrained to it. You try to pull your arms up, but they don’t budge. In fact, all you achieve is to dump yourself over onto your face. It sends stars shooting across your vision.
“Ow”, you hear yourself say.
You lay there, feeling sore and more than a little stupid. You try to pull your legs free, but instead it feels as if your calves are aflame and your thighs are filled with concrete. All you achieve is to dig the chair legs further into your calves and intensify their pain. And now your jaw hurts. It’s not exactly the “James Bond” moment that you’d fantasized about.
If there’s one bright side to this, you’ve momentarily forgotten your situation.
Remember, ladies and gentlemen...
You are not James Bond.
And there are no heroes.
