Donovan stands on the roof of the arena, staring out at dusk. His cloak flows in the breeze. A door opens and closes, and Calypso steps out onto the roof, standing a few feet behind him.
Calypso: Feeling better?
Hastings: Why, because I won?
Calypso: Rumor has it you’ve run Dirge out of UGWC entirely.
Hastings: Dirge forgot one simple truth, one that I nearly lost sight of myself.
Calypso: What’s that?
Hastings: There are no such thing as heroes and villains. All heroes are villains, and villains are heroes. It’s just a matter of perspective.
Donovan turns to face her.
Hastings: The Truth is always perverted by whoever reveals it. His diatribe about his role as a villain was meaningless.
Donovan turns back away.
Hastings: Yet I almost fell into the trap. Nearly allowed myself to be swept up in that madness.
He lowers his head for a moment.
Hastings: Do you know what I felt when I saw what Dirge did after he lost?
Calypso: When he attacked the fans on his way out.
Donovan nods.
Hastings: Nothing. I felt nothing. Not a hint of anger. Not a shred of pity. These people have cheered me, yet I care nothing for their pain.
Calypso: You don’t know them.
Hastings: It runs deeper. I don’t care about the oil spill down south. I’m hardly fazed by the aftermath of terrorist actions. Does this make me terrible?
Calypso: I think it’s disingenuous for people to feign that they care about such things when it has no impact on their lives. Tragedy is unfortunate when it happens to somebody else, but life moves on.
Donovan nods.
Hastings: Life moves on…
Calypso: And you need to move on. From the sound of things, it is going to be difficult to predict what is coming at you this month.
Hastings: For the better. So far, it was the journey to the championship that has proven the most rewarding. My battles to keep it have paled in comparison to what I overcame to win it to begin with. It isn’t something I see changing, either. What can anyone do that wouldn’t pale in comparison to what Raenius and Dirge have already attempted?
Calypso: There is one.
Hastings: Let him come, if he dares. I’m not what he remembers. In the meantime, we’ll deal with whatever Synergy holds for us.
Calypso: Medos.
Hastings: Again? Beating on him isn’t even fun anymore.
Calypso: Have you heard from Travis?[/color=
Donovan glances back at her.
Hastings: Why?
Calypso: Was just wondering.
Hastings: He’s busy with the bearded wonder, which is fine, because this?
He opens his arm, and Calypso steps into it, and he embraces her and kisses her on the forehead.
Hastings: This is all I need.
Calypso: Feeling better?
