Alex sat at his desk in the office of the Dragon’s Cave Academy. His brow is furrowed as he frantically scribbles his way through an assuredly boring form and places it on a pile to his left before taking another from a second pile to his right. Judging by the size of both piles he’s been at this for quite some time and will likely be at for some time more. He sighs as he stops, crosses something out and writes it again. A knock on his door makes his head snap up quickly. In the doorway is grappling coach Jacob Bryce.
“Yes?” Alex asks, his pen still poised in position.
“Malone’s downstairs.” Jacob said, gesturing out behind himself with his thumb. “Says she’s got an interview with you.”
Alex’s eyes opened wide. “Shit.” he muttered. “I completely forgot about that.” He stopped, looked between the piles on each side of him, then back up at Jacob hopefully. “You don’t think she’ll take a rain check do you?”
“Do you?”
Alex sighed and slumped back in his seat. “Send her up.”
“No need.” Roxy’s soft musical voice replied as she appeared from behind Jacob, brushed past him and made to take a seat in front of the desk.
Alex hesitated, looked between Roxy at the desk and Jacob at the door. “You said she was downstairs.”
“I thought she was.” Jacob replied defensively.
Throughout this moment Roxy has drawn out a pen and a notepad while wearing a smile that suggests she’s very pleased with herself. “Jay taught me a couple of things.” she said.
“I’ll leave you to it.” Jacob said as he made his exit, closing the door behind him.
“I’m sorry Roxy but this is going to have to be quick. Things kinda got me distracted the last couple of weeks and, as you can see.” Alex said, gesturing to the paperwork around him. “Things have piled up on me.”
“I understand. I’m sure we can get through this swiftly enough and you can get back to whatever exciting stuff you’ve got there.”
“Thank you.”
“So.” Roxy began. “Last week you teamed with Travis Roberts for the first time. How do you think it went?”
“I think it went well. We won for a start. It seems our two styles compliment one another surprisingly well.”
“Speaking of that match and your victory, you personally scored a pin fall over the reigning Cross-Hemisphere Champion, the man who took that belt from you at Revolution, John Russo. How did that feel?”
Alex thought for a second. “Well, it’s always good to get a win. It’s always satisfying to beat someone who’s had your number in the past and especially someone who’s taken a title from you. I’d like to think that last week proved I’m still a contender but there were two other people in that match. It’s hard to truly compare Cooperative performances with singles match-ups.”
Roxy finished writing down his response. “Well the word backstage is that you will in fact be facing Travis Pierce once again at In Your Hands for the Number 1 contenders position for the Cross Hemisphere title. What’re your thoughts on that?”
“Travis Pierce is an ass. It was understandable when UGWC first formed that there would be some tension between the two of us. We were each others opposite number, we both had titles that we were proud of and had no intention of losing. It was unfortunate that one of us had to but that’s the way the business works. I think that if he was able to take that loss with some kind of grace then there’s no reason the two of us couldn’t have got along.”
“Do you really believe that?” Roxy asked.
“Of course. He’s a charismatic guy that the fans really get behind. Some would argue that he’s just the kind of person I could use as a Tag partner. That ship has long since sailed though. Since No Holds Barred Travis Pierce has shown himself as little more then a child who can’t take losing. I bet he was the kind of kid who’d throw the board over when he was losing at checkers.”
“Maybe you should play him and find out.” Roxy joked.
“Maybe I’ll suggest is to Moss, could be on the poll for In Your Hands. How is he anyway?”
“He’s doing well. Anyway though, you haven’t entirely answered the original question.” Roxy said, getting things back on track.
“Sorry. What was it again?”
“Your thought on a Number 1 Contenders match with Pierce at In Your Hands.”
“Oh- yeah.” Alex cleared his throat. “As I said, Pierce is an ass. Now I could take his childish whining but two weeks ago he made things real personal. He always complains about how some unfair advantage he perceives me as having but two weeks ago we were in the exact same place, both going for that World Heavyweight title poll position. He lost, straight up. I can’t say for sure but I’m confident I had my match won until he interfered. When he did that he made things really personal. Everyone in UGWC wants that World Heavyweight title. Anyone who says they don’t is lying. So, when a guys got a shot, unless your fighting him for that same shot, you don’t get in his way. You just don’t.”
“What can we expect from In Your Hands then?”
“Payback.” Alex said sternly.
“Right.” Roxy said, taken aback by Alex’s bluntness, she recomposed herself. “This week you’re facing Kyle Tacker. What’re you thoughts on the match?”
“Tacker, yeah, I remember him, just. I’d like to say how he’s a great competitor and we’ll have a great hard fought bout come Monday but the truth is, will we? Kyle Tacker spent his first month getting beaten up by everyone who saw him and had his title taken by Jet who barely even seemed to break a sweat. Then he hid for over a month. At best Kyle Tacker is a thug with a pair of knuckledusters. At worst, he’s a thug with a pair of knuckledusters and some severe ring rust.”
“I’ll take it your confident then?”
“As long as I can get out from behind here long enough to get some training done, yes.” Alex laughed.
“Tacker is known to be a close associate of John Russo. Do you think this match will effect your standing with the Champion?”
“Another win always increases your standing in the company. With Russo personally, after last week I should hope my standing with him is pretty high anyway. I hope he doesn’t take anything I do this week personally though. I can do without another mortal enemy right now.”
“Ok, one last one. Four men have a chance to face Russo for the title at In Your Hands. Who would you like it to be?”
“Hmm, that’s a tough one. I have genuine respect for everyone in the poll, even Forewell and any of them should produce a great match come the PPV. Truth is after In Your Hands I could be lined up for a match against one of those very people. I don’t mind who it is, I just hope the most worthy man gets through and makes the most of his opportunity.”
“Very diplomatic.” Roxy said as she finished writing and closed the pad. “That will do just fine. Thank you for your time.”
“No problem.”
Roxy gets up from the seat and makes her way out of the office as Alex sighs and once more returns to his paperwork.
“Yes?” Alex asks, his pen still poised in position.
