The scene opens to the waiting room inside the hospital where we’ve been over the last year visiting our dear friend Ezekiel Pax. Most would expect to see his dear friend and partial caretaker, Scarlet, sitting close by but that is not the case today. The only people that most former-GIW fans would notice are Xavier Bryan, former manager and lifelong friend/stepbrother to Ezekiel and Xavier’s friend David Dace. Both men sit solemnly, heads perched on hands, waiting to hear the word on Ezekiel’s condition on his most recent surgery. He had been released from the hospital but an emergency had brought them back. The scene fades as we go into flashback mode.
“Oh. My. God.” The words escaped Nicholas Vinegar’s mouth as Ezekiel burst into flames. Nothing else could have summed it up better. One second, Ezekiel was fighting off an attack from The Resident Evil, the very next he was on fire from head to toe. This was the last thing Ezekiel had remembered. The next thing he knew he woke up inside of a gleaming white hospital room with morphine dulling the edges of everything around him. Scarlet had been there the night this all started and she was by his side when she woke up. He’d also seen Xavier a few times and his old partner Marek along with some new faces.
“I guess that is why they call you the Iron Man.” This was an unfamiliar voice. The man, later known as David, had thought Ezekiel was sleeping. He was just enjoying another press on the morphine drip. David must have known more about Ezekiel then Ezekiel knew about him because he had used his nickname. The Iron Man. Ezekiel had been called that because he had more heart than anyone else his size. David wasn’t much bigger so he must have known firsthand what it was like to take on a bigger foe. At 5 foot 10 inches, Ezekiel had taken on anyone in his path. Monsters like Dredd, Komosube, and Dirge. Ezekiel liked David. He figured they had a lot in common. But, that wasn’t the only new face Ezekiel had seen during his recovery.
“We actually weren’t supposed to meet.” She had the voice of an angel but Ezekiel was well enough to know that she really did exist. Her name was Nikolle and together her and Kristoff, both old friends of Xavier, had made videos to teach Ezekiel more styles and techniques so he would be better than ever when he finally returned. The videos included meditation techniques that would calm Ezekiel’s mind and help him heal faster as well examples of the new moves and holds he would be learning. They said watching the videos would mentally prepare him for the physical part. Give him an edge on what was to come. He’d only been out of the hospital a few days when he started training again. Xavier said he was a fast learner and was no longer the shaky young kid he was when he smoked weed.
After a couple weeks of training he decided to try one of the meditation techniques. Xavier had just thought he was doing a good job because he had been meditating for a half hour. But, when he finished and went to stand, Ezekiel suddenly collapsed. Xavier immediately dialed 911 as David tried CPR, unsuccessfully. On the way to the hospital, they got his heart rate back and fast forward briefly and he is in surgery. We fade back into the waiting room where a doctor is walking down the hall towards Xavier and David. Both men get to their feet as the scene fades to Ezekiel. He stands in a dimly lit room dressed only in a hospital gown. His scars are still deeply visible. Suddenly, a doorway appears. Ezekiel slowly walks towards it and cautiously opens the door. As the door completely opens, a white light emits from it.
“Aw, shit.” he says as the scene fades to black.
