Three years ago…
A bar, somewhere…
The bartender wipes an open section of the bar. Donovan walks in and sits down, dressed in ripped jeans, a t-shirt, and a backwards baseball cap. He is four days unshaven.
Bartender: What can I get you?
Hastings: The usual.
Bartender: Sure, except I don’t think I’ve seen you in here before.
Hastings: Get me whatever people usually get.
The bartender stares at him for a few moments.
Bartender: Most people order from the top shelf.
Donovan glances at the guy a couple seats down.
Hastings: That guy has a beer.
Bartender: He’s not usual.
Donovan leans forward and looks down the bar.
Hastings: Everyone has a beer.
Bartender: What can I say, it’s not a usual kind of night.
Donovan stares at the bartender.
Hastings: Just give me something on tap and put a shot of amaretto in it.
Bartender: Sure, boss. That’ll do.
The bartender makes the drink and gives it to Donovan. He takes a sip.
Voice: I’ve been waiting for you.
Donovan glances back over his shoulder. He sees a woman sitting at a table behind him, holding a deck of cards. It is Calypso.
Hastings: You’re talking to me?
Calypso: Of course. I’ve been wondering what was taking so long, actually.
Hastings: Do I know you?
Calypso: Not yet. But I’m the reason you’re here.
Hastings: Yeah, okay.
Donovan turns back to the bar and takes another sip of his drink. Calypso smiles. Donovan stands and turns around.
Hastings: Okay, I’ll bite. Why are you the reason I’m here?
Calypso: It’s your destiny.
Hastings: I make my own destiny.
Calypso: Of course you do.
She pushes the chair across from her out with her foot. Donovan hesitates a moment, but he sits.
Calypso: Here, shuffle these.
She hands him the deck. He hesitates, buts begins shuffling the deck.
Hastings: Let me guess, you’re going to pull me a joker.
Calypso: Won’t find one in there, I’m afraid.
Donovan shuffles the deck a final time and hands it back to her.
Hastings: And why is that?
Calypso deals ten cards in a celtic cross.
Hastings: What is this?
Calypso: Tarot. Hush.
She points to the first card.
Calypso: The Eight of Swords. It’s often significant of feeling lost or restricted. It is often a sign that you are heading toward, or are already in, a situation in which you will feel a lack of freedom and choice. At each step, your options seem to narrow until you feel completely stuck.
Hastings: Thanks so much.
Calypso: Except you do have choices, and you do have power. No matter how trapped you feel, you can find a way out if you believe it is possible. Solutions are not always easy, but they exist.
Hastings: Do they?
Calypso: Sometimes.
She smiles. Donovan leans back in the chair and bites his lip. She points to the second card.
Calypso: The Lovers. Keep it in your pants, darling. The Lovers are significant of new challenges. A need to decide one's beliefs, to determine one's own values if you mean to be true to yourself.
Hastings: Okay, you know what…
Donovan stands up and picks up his drink.
Hastings: I’ve had enough, thanks.
He walks back to the bar. Calypso tilts her head down with a smile, and whispers.
Calypso: No, you haven’t.
Donovan pauses before he sits back down. His head tilts down and he bites his lip again. After a moment of hesitation, he looks back towards her.
Hastings: Buy you a drink?
Calypso stands with a smile and goes to sit down next to him at the bar. Donovan watches her sit, and sits himself.
Hastings: I’ll bet you’re going to say you knew I was going to do that.
Calypso: Sweetie, it was inevitable.
