Thunder cracks. Lightning illuminates the gray sky. Up until an hour ago, Seito Risa's mood was a match for that stormy sky. Her frustration, no anger, had but one place it should be allowed out, and sadly, the Consortium had run for the hills when they allowed Zane Scott to worm his way into that match two weeks ago. Not even their usual snarky letter had awaited her n her locker room. She had been brooding, feeling as if she were trapped in a cage with no exit, until she had arrived at the hospital. Sitting there, watching Ichiro move around with almost no limp, having already regained full use and strength in his upper body, his mind as sharp as ever. Only a slight limp in his left leg giving any sign that something was wrong, and that, she had been assured would come with time. It was good, she thought. If nothing else in the last two weeks in her life could make her smile, this could. They had talked at length about the risk she had taken, risking her own life to save his. He fully appreciated the sacrifice. For some odd reason here she felt more at peace. The leveling, comfortable presence of the other half of her spirit, she was convinced, giving her own turmoil embattled soul the strength to do something it had not done since the accident, or before, when her Grandfather had his heart attack. Relax. As his therapy came to an end, Ichiro walked back to where the wheel chair waited for him.
I: "I want to walk back to my room. I should be able to do it with no problem."
The doctors look at one another, the therapist nodding.
Therapist: "Alright. Just take it slow and easy."
Ichiro nods. Risa giggles, reading Ichiro's look at her. The doctors both look at her, knowing that giggle usually meant trouble for them.
SR: "Ichi-kun. No running in the halls."
He smiles at her, she laughs at the grin.
I: "Awwwwww."
She gets to her feet and walks over to him.
SR: "Come on. You need to get back before lunch. You don't want to miss that."
Ichiro's hands go to his stomach and he groans.
I: "I wish they'd give me something with flavor."
Risa nods stepping up beside him. They walk slowly, side by side, the doctors and the wheelchair behind them.
I: "So, they made you do that?"
Risa nods, hiding a scowl, or at least trying to.
SR: "Yes. And they are hiding, the cowards. I don't know what the Constortium's little game is, but I'm getting damn tired of playing."
They stay to one side of the corridor, windows showing the rain pelting against them.
I: "Still, I know you. You will stay with it if, for no other reason than to spite them."
Risa nods.
SR: "My time will come. I'm convinced of that now. I think they know it, too. That's why last week they pulled that stunt with that lummox Zane Scott. Not to mention this past week."
Ichiro stops and looks at her.
I: "A small package? I mean..."
She shrugs.
SR: "Never let it be said I'm not a company girl. But you know me. Taking my time. Sooner or later they will slip up and when they do, I'll be ready."
Ichiro smiles as they turn into the corridor where his room is.
I: "I like that confidence. It's good to see you feeling that way again. After what happened with your Grandfather I was worried. And then, for you to do what you did to save me. I just don't know. If I weren't a taken man I might think you had feelings for me."
Risa nods, wrapping her arm around his.
SR: "I do. But I know that you aren't for me. Doesn't mean I can't still treat you like the special person you are in my life."
Ichiro nods, turning an odd look on Risa.
SR: "No. It doesn't mean you can't. It doesn't mean I can't do the same for you."
Risa leans in a little, placing her head on his shoulder.
SR: "You always do."
They reach his room and turn inside. The nurse is there, a large sponge in hand.
Nurse: "There you are. I was starting to think they discharged you and didn't tell me!"
The young man smiles brightly. Ichiro clears his throat.
I: "Yes, well. Therapy session ran a little long."
Risa nudges Ichiro gently in the ribs.
SR: "Looks like you get an immediate clean up, too. You enjoy your sponge bath. Now that I've watched your work out, it's time for me to do mine."
Ichiro pauses, looking back at Risa as he settles on the bed.
I: "You? Work out?"
She nods.
SR: "I know, it's a shock. I thought Mom was going to join Grandfather in the heart attack department when I told her about it."
Ichiro smiles.
I: "I imagine so. Will you be here in the morning?"
Risa nods, stepping forward to hug him.
SR: "Soon as they let visitors in, just like always."
He smiles, nodding.
I: "Okay, Brutus. Lets do this."
Risa makes it outside, the door closing behind her before she leans on the wall, shaking. One of the doctors comes around to see if she is okay, just in time for her to explode in laughter. He takes a step back and looks at the Therapist with raised eyebrows. They shrug at each other and move off, down the hall. Risa does as well, wiping a tear from her eye from laughing so hard. She moves out to the lobby and looks at the pouring rain. A glance at the receptionist getting her a shrug.
SR: "What are the odds of getting a taxi?"
The receptionist looks down at her desk.
Receptionist: "Pretty good if you can wait about four minutes."
Risa nods as the girl picks up the phone and dials. Within moments, a yellow cab pulls up in front. Risa takes a deep breath and with a squeal runs through the rain, diving into the backseat of the cab.
SR: "Galaxy Fitness on Bernham Wood, please!"
The driver turns grinning.
Diver: "You sure you don't wanna go to Dunsinane Hill?"
Risa blinks, then smiles.
SR: "This is cab fifty-two?"
He nods.
Driver: "Yep. Lean back and relax. Bernham is about a half hour in this rain and traffic. I notice you aren't dressed to run today. Need to make a stop for your gear?"
Risa shakes her head, brushing the skirt of her light blue dress into order.
SR: "Not necessary. It's at the gym already."
The driver nods again.
Driver: "Right-o!"
With that, he pulls into the rain and eases into the barely moving traffic.
(time marches on)
Half an hour was optimistic. Nearly fifty minutes pass before Risa pays for the cab and walks into the gym. She waves to the receptionist and heads into the women's locker area. She's surprised to find her personal trainer there.
SR: "Hello. Thought you'd be working with a client already."
Her trainer, a cinnamon redhead with a build like Mister Olympia shakes her head, flexing her pecks, glutes and a few other muscles Risa is sure are not natural on a woman.
Trainer: "Nah. The Milquetoast skipped out on me today. Not that it matters much. He wasn't actually serious about his goals."
Risa nods, stepping up to her locker on the opposite side, opening it up and pulling out a gym bag. She sets her purse inside and kicks off her shoes.
SR: "Not a good day to wear open toes. I should have checked the forecast."
The trainer shrus.
Trainer: "Having your hair like that looks good on you."
Risa quirks an eyebrow.
SR: "Um. Are you saying, Tina, that I look good as a drowned rat?"
The trainer raises her right hand in mock self defense.
Tina: "I'd never say that to someone born under the sign of the cat."
Risa nods, smiling brightly.
SR: "Good. Now."
She unzips her gym bag, pulling out some jogging shorts and shoes, a matching sleeveless t-shirt and a sport bra. All in silver with red trim.
SR: "Okay, I'm going to go get ready and..."
She is cut off by the theme from, of all things, Robotech.
SR: "Nani?"
She gets her purse, pulls out her cell and quirks an eyebrow at the number.
SR: "Hello."
Tina watches as Risa's eyebrows quirk even more.
SR: "This is. Um. Okay. What can I do for you?"
She listens to the voice on the other end. She blinks in surprise.
SR: "Um. Sure. I'm booked up until about two-thirty. If she wants to meet at the same place as we did last time, I'm good with that. Thanks."
She hangs up and looks back at Tina.
Tina: "Well, I'm gonna go make fun of the college boys trying to bench press. See you when you get out there."
Risa nods, her attention returning to her phone. She adds the number to her contacts. She then spells out a name to associate with the number. E. Morgan. She returns the cell to her purse, which is returned to the locker. She unzips her dress and steps out of it, hanging it on the hanger in her locker. Then she takes her gear and heads for the shower to prepare herself to sweat like a maniac, closing and locking the locker door behind her.
I: "I want to walk back to my room. I should be able to do it with no problem."
