Ok I've come into this late so I'm gonna cover a couple of things.
I'll start with Montana's original point. Why play Guitar Hero when you can learn to play a guitar? Why play Call of Duty when you can join the army? Why play Madden when you can play Football?
There's various answers but it essentially boils down to ease and ability. Videogames are escapism. While learning to play a guitar requires you to buy a guitar, take lessons and practice for years to, if you're lucky, be average. Guitar Hero allows you to spend a fraction of the money and be playing your favourite songs within' minutes of starting it up. Much like Call of Duty allows you to be a Marine without the distinct possibility of dying etc.
Now as for the point about about originality in gaming. Guitar Hero is a great example. See now we look at Guitar Hero and see another franchise game. But if you cast your mind back only a matter of a few years you'll remember a little game called Guitar Hero 1. Like now people had decided they wanted something new and original and although rythem games had been done before, Guitar Hero took a new approach and did so on a greater scale with much greater success. People enjoyed Guitar Hero and were happy. But you see one of two things happens with new and original games.
1) Everyone decides they don't like this original new game and prefer what they had before. The game falls into obscurity with a small cult following if it's lucky.
2) People enjoy the new game. They finish the first one though and demand more of it. A new franchise is born and people are happy. That is, until they decide this game has got boring and once more they demand originality.
There's only so original things can be. Everythings original to start with but people are running out of ideas. I mean, what could anyone here come up with that they genuinly believe would be an utterly original, marketable and popular game?
I'll finish off with my own run down of favourite games. Top 5 in no particular order:-
Shadow of the Colossus (PS2) Final Fantasy X (PS2) Mass Effect (X360) Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection (PSP) The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (X360)

Hm.
The bulk of my video game time lately has been split between Guitar Hero: Metallica and MLB '09: The Show, with sprinklings here and there of Street Fighter IV. Last month I played through Ghostbusters, which was pretty good.
I am eagerly looking forward to Arkham Asylum, Ultimate Alliance 2, Dissidia, and downloading MvC2. I'm thinking about downloading the FF4 sequel on my Wii.
Amongst my favorite all time games, in no particular order... - Final Fantasy 7 - Final Fantasy 10 - Final Fantasy Tactics - Kingdom Hearts 2 - Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past - Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Mega Man 2 - Mega Man X

Final Fantasy X makes me only remember one thing:
my 300 pound friend running through the mall the day it came out. I never saw that fat fuck run for anything, including food, but he ran for FFX. Then to find out they sold out already. He cried.
