Induction:
The sounds of “Phucking Phreak” play through the festival grounds as Phrixus Deimos appears on the stage and approaches the Hall of Fame podium, settling behind it. It is several moments before he begins to speak.
“Today, UGWC opens the doors to its Hall of Fame for the very first time, to its inaugural class. Ten years ago, if you told Alan Fernandez that he would be in a Hall of Fame, he would have asked you how much he had to pay for the ticket. The man that we all knew as “The Talk of the Town” never thought much of himself, never truly recognized or understood the talent that he was.”
“I first met Alan in 2001, at the beginning of both of our careers, when both of us were just trying to find our place. I was little more than a paranoid sideshow, and Alan just a raw talent. Our first time in the ring together, we faced off in a Herring Match, perhaps best remembered for the use of an illegal striped bass. We recognized a kindred spirit in each other, we both did, and Freak Show Central was born.”
A chant of “F-S-C” breaks out in the crowd, and Phrixus nods his head and waits several moments before continuing.
“Alan had a knack for accomplishing things that nobody expected him to, for achieving things that were never meant to be within his reach. When he won the Lord of the Ring tournament, people looked at it and said, “that’s nice, good for him.” But then he went to Outlast, advanced to the finals, and won the World Title, and the self-proclaimed Freak had dethroned the mighty Robert Ooley.”
Director Ooley is shown in the crowd, and he actually appears to smile.
“When the Massive Melee came along and Arelas won it, and that same night Phoenix won the World Title from Alan when he beat us in a tag match, everybody knew that the main event of Lockmania that year was going to be Phoenix and Arelas. Everybody except Alan Fernandez. He got a rematch against Phoenix and beat him in his own match, beat him in the Inferno Pit, and forced his way into that Lockmania main event.”
Applause from the crowd.
“We were great friends, phenomenal teammates. FSC held championships as a team six different times, in four different promotions, including here in UGWC. As good of friends as we were, the truth is that we made even better enemies. When we faced off with the Cross-Hemisphere Title on the line, we both knew that one match simply wouldn’t be enough. Three matches wouldn’t be enough. No, we knew we needed a best of seven series of matches, a series in which every match would see the stakes rise higher and higher. Seven matches. Seven stipulations. Submission. Strap. Hamsterball. Hall of Mirrors. Weehawken Water Tower. Finally, an Iron Man Match, in which I didn’t really defeat the Innovator of Offense, so much as I survived him.”
“Two time World Champion. Lord of the Ring. Eight time tag team champion. Outlast Champion. Cross-Hemisphere Champion. Seventeen total championships across four promotions, but there is so much more to the legacy of the Talk of the Town. Brother. Partner. Friend. Lover of cookies. Freak.”
Phrixus lowers his head for a moment.
“Legend.”
“Alan Fernandez passed from this world nearly two and a half years ago. If he were here today, he would be sitting out there among you, staring up at me on this stage, and he would stand up and shout, “you’re talking...WHY ARE YOU TALKING!?!?!”
“I’m talking about you because you deserve it, because today you are the Talk of not only the Town, but of this entire Industry. Freaks are everywhere, freaks are nowhere, freaks are cool. I will never forget you, old friend. This...I vow.”
After this final words, the three words that ended many an Alan Fernandez promo, Phrixus steps back, and slowly produces the Talk’s infamous Mallet of Doom from behind the podium. He places it in front of the podium, and steps back and joins with the crowd in their applause.
