The doctor had promised to come back to 'unveil' her dear friend Ezekiel in 'a few days' but she had yet to see the doctor since they spoke. How long was 'a few days'? Technically, it was 3. To most people in the world, a few meant 3. 2 was a couple, a few was 3, 4 or more meant a lot. Just as she had reached her limit of patience, she heard footsteps approach the door. She quickly exited her position on the bed next to Ezekiel, knowing full well that she had broken her promise to the doctor. She had made a deal with the orderlies that they wouldn't tell their Chief Medical Supervisor what she had been doing. They didn't see any harm in it, just as long as she was being disruptive like other visitors had been. The girl kept to herself while she was there. She wasn't rude or obnoxious to them.
Anyways, like a child who just finished their stolen cookie from the cookie jar, Scarlet just stood there silently staring at the doctor as she entered the room.
"Everything okay?" asked the doctor as she headed toward Ezekiel doing her usual checks. Checking his pulse, feeling the bandages, etc. etc. Scarlet didn't answer her, she just silently looked away. The doctor said and went back to her checks. "If you're upset about me not coming back as soon as you wanted, you can keep the attitude. My daughter at home was sick. I took a couple extra days off over the weekend."
Scarlet continued looking away but her face became contorted with anger. How dare this woman speak to her like that? Who did she think she was? This woman, some lowly doctor who couldn't keep a schedule talk down to Scarlet, borderline member of The Covenant. She did as dear Raenius had asked of her, right? Her brain exploded with violent images. She was tired of this back-talking bitch. Her thoughts were interrupted by someone placing their hand on her shoulder. She jumped and quickly spun then backpedaled. It was just the doctor.
"Whoa, calm down." The doctor smiled wryly. "I was just trying to snap you from your daydream to let you know that all the checks went well and we can take of Ezekiel's bandages today. The nurse on duty told me that they changed the bandages a couple of days ago so it's time to change them anyways. This time they can stay off."
It was Scarlet who smiled this time. She leaps forward and gave the doctor a great big hug. No more violent images swept through her troubled head. She was excited. They hadn't let her be in the rooms when they changed the bandages so she hadn't seen what her dear Ezekiel looked like after the 'accident'. She would get back at those bastards for what they did to him. Raenius and his band of merry misfits. She was trying to help Ezekiel but her throw was off. She never was that good at sports. She snapped back to reality again to realize she had still been hugging the doctor. She quickly let go.
"Sorry, doc." Scarlet said as she headed for her chair next to the bed. "I'm just so excited. I can't wait to see --"
She was stopped suddenly by the doctor grabbing her by the arm.
"You have to leave, Scarlet." The doctor said quietly. "Just like if we were changing the bandages. It's a medical procedure. You'll have to wait in the hallway."
Scarlet quickly pulled her arm from the doctor's grip. She walked over to Ezekiel and gave his bandaged head a kiss and headed for the door. Stupid bitch of a doctor. Raenius would definitely hear about this. Maybe she could convince him to hurt the doctor. She was in his good graces now after doing what he had asked.
After sitting in the hallway for an eternity, or at least it felt that way, the doctor exited Ezekiel's room with her crew of nurses carrying a bag marked 'bio hazard' which no doubt held the bandages that were once covering poor Ezekiel. The nurses pass Scarlet by as she gets to her feet, looking expectantly at the doctor.
"How is he?" Scarlet asks, almost looking as if she will simply crumble if she doesn't hear what she has been waiting for. "Is he okay? How did the removal go?"
Scarlet is about to continue her line of questions but the doctor simply raises one hand, getting the young woman to quiet down. "Everything went fine. His skin is still healing but the fresh air will help."
"Can I see him?"
"Yes."
Scarlet quickly heads for the door but the doctor grabs her arm. "As a fair warning, he is still healing and we did all we can with the numerous surgeries and skin grafts but you may not recognize the young man laying before you." The doctor side, braving herself to continue. "Most of the damage was done to his right arm, chest area, his jaw area, and his nose. We did the best we can Scarlet. Also, he is still in the medicine-induced coma. We are still unsure on when we will bring him back to consciousness."
Scarlet nodded, looking confident that she could handle whatever is behind that door. The doctor releases her grip as Scarlet pulls away toward Room 13. Scarlet slowly opens the door and walks in. We can't see Ezekiel at first. Scarlet is blocking the view. See his feet, untouched from the fire, covered under a blanket that is pulled to his waist. Scarlet silently weeps and sits down in the chair next to the bed with her hands over her mouth.
"Oh god." she gasps.
The sight before is breathtaking and gruesome at the same time. Ezekiel's stomach area is slightly burned but looks to have healed mostly. From his sternum to his neck is what looks to be a mixture of red and white wax mushed together to from a crude sculpture. His left arm is slightly scarred, but like his stomach it looks to have healed. His right arm is worse than his chest. Parts of it look to still be scabbed over along with the wax-like skin covering from wrist to shoulder. His hand looks waxy but normal otherwise. The worst part looks to be his face. His mouth is twisted in what looks to be a grimace of pain. His nose almost looks non-existent. His eyes are closed and look to have barely been touched. His eyebrows seem to have grown back. The horrid sight brings Scarlet into worse and worse convulsions of sobbing. She slinks from the chair to the floor on her knee's. She looks upward, to God maybe, before repeating these words over and over.
"What have I done? Oh dear God, what have I done?"
