I knew she was hurt before my dad called to confirm it. I’ve always been able to tell, ever since I was little and she first started fighting. It feels like panic. Like panic and pain gripping at the very heart of me. To be slightly more precise, it feels like my heart stops. The breath just leaves my lungs and I start seeing those little white dots in my sight, like you do when you shut your eyes tightly for a long time. Jarek’s phone call had not surprised me. I tried to remain calm for him though, and to act surprised when he finally sighed, and got around to the reason for calling. I love dad, but he spares my feelings a lot of the time.
‘ Hayleigh, your mom’s been hurt. They’re bringing her back to the room, and I want you to just stay out of the way okay baby, cause she’s not going to be too happy.’
‘Okay…’
He hung up, and I could hear her now, cussing up a storm and probably trying to get whomever else was around away from her. I backed against the wall, intending to leave as soon as the way was clear. I don’t like being babysat, and that’s what they were doing, bringing me with them but never letting me out of sight. She came in, looking horrible, and that’s not a term I use lightly. She was woozy, but feisty, her eyes unfocused and swiveling around, as if trying to fixate on something specific. It was probably a good thing that she couldn’t though, because had she a focal point, I’m fairly certain that she’d have hurt one of the poor guys holding her. I moved against the far right wall as they set her down. One of the guys looked at me apologetically. I shrugged in response.
‘I said take me back there dammit! I’m not done with that girl, Calypso! Get your scrawny dear diary looking ass back here!’
‘Chassie calm the fuck-’
‘No, NO!’
‘Chass, the match is over, she pinned you.’
Mom stopped at this point, holding her head still for a second, and the EMT’s swarmed her, trying to clean off the blood and assess the damages. About this time, I figured that getting out of the way might be the best idea. I’m not queasy, but I didn’t want to be in the way when she sent the medics flying. As I headed out of the door I heard him talking to her.
‘What do you mean, I wasn’t pinned…’
‘ Chassie it just happened, don’t you…remember?’
‘I remember that the bitch moved and then shoved me, I hit the table and then these blue clad douchebags are all over me. She pinned me? Man what the fuck, hey watch the hands pretty boy, medic or not...’
The words come out like a wave of disbelief. The air is cooler in the hallway and I can see the next match. I want to be out there, I want to be one of them…their beautiful and perfect and monsters and ugly, dreams and nightmares rolled into one. I love watching all of them, I always have. There’s something magical about it. Dad’s voice catches my attention and I turn as his hand reaches for my shoulder. He looks around, slightly unsettled.
‘ Hayles…why don’t you come back to the room? I don’t want you out here alone. You could be hurt.’
‘You mean you don’t want me out here because of all the shit with this ridiculous Jezebel Saint situation, right? Because you and I know they’re not bringing any of the matches back here. The most action I’d see would be the great buffet war between the sound guy and the production tech guy. I’d bet on the production tech personally.’
“Yes, that’s exactly what I mean. I’m not afraid of them, but I’d much rather not give them the opportunity to get irrational and stupid as far as your concerned. Let’s not give them any reason to look this way for retribution.”
Aww, God bless him he was worried about me.
‘Dad, please. I’ll be fine. I’m not worried about them. I stopped being afraid of the boogeyman and things that go bump in the night when I was six.’
He held my gaze, and I stood unwavering. I was not taught to run from potential problems and I was not about to start now. Papa would just have to deal with that. He sighed, and I braced myself for a possible parental onslaught.
‘Hayleigh, I am not questioning your courage, or your honor, I’m saying to be smart. Every fighter back here will tell you that picking your battles is just as important as the fight itself. And this is not the time or place. Make the decision Hayleigh, because I can no longer choose for you.’
He came at me with logic, and a complete willingness to back off and let me stay. I sighed, and pulled some of my hair back away from my face. Parental force of will I was ready for, but his ability to talk sense to me threw me off guard. I analyzed the situation for a moment. Things between the Covenant and Salem(his retards included) were not going well, and even I could sense trouble brewing beyond what my uncle Mickey had done, although Jezebel never should have doubted Uncle Mickey for a second. She did and she was getting what she had coming for that. Further more, brothers or not, Salem and Raenius were at odds. Two powerhouses in one federation at odds with one another meant that technically shit could go down anytime, anyplace, and with KvK there, for any or no reason at all. This whole place balanced on a delicate string, and between us, we were walking a fine dance between resolution and disaster. What the Covenant needed, what we had to have now was strength and unity. And those were things we could not hope to have with one of us standing in the hallway practically flipping the mentally unstable the bird. Plus, Salem and Co. are all generally big boys, and I am not. I took about ten seconds to rationally process that information before turning calmly and heading back toward the room. I could already hear Mom’s voice, and another, unfamiliar one. They were arguing.
‘I wish I could change the diagnosis, but I can’t. It’s not broken, but damn near close. I personally don’t see how it’s not; Also it looked like you have a pretty severe concussion. That may be why you don’t remember the ending to your match Ms. Fear. You were pretty out of it. Now look, you are going to be out of it for a few weeks at least, to be monitored and make sure that everything is okay.’
‘Bullshit.’
Gotta love my mom’s outlook on things. I swear, she’s as stubborn as I am. I walked in cautiously.
‘Mom, come on, you could use a few weeks off, you need to rest, and recuperate. I’ve got your bags packed already. Let’s just leave, come on.’
She looked at me like she didn’t believe I would say that, but after a moment she started to stand. The doctor immediately set her down. She looked at him with murderous eyes.
‘Ms. Fear, I don’t think you understand. Your going to a hospital for evaluation, and then you will be sent home in a neck brace. They’re bringing the stretcher now.’
‘Like hell they are, I’m walking. Furthermore I’m going home, I do not care to spend my time in a hospital.’
This time the doctor looked like he was seething. He took obvious effort to reign in his devil before responding calmly.
‘Ms. Fear, you will go, whether you go willingly or not is up to you; But you will go. If you choose not to go willingly I will be more than glad to order you mentally unfit to speak for yourself and I will have multiple men come in here, strap you to a stretcher and take you out.’
I saw mom deliberate for half a second before shooting the doctor a scathing look that was full of loathing.
‘Get me a wheelchair and that damn neck brace. I swear you’d think I was a crip.’
Well, looked like the Doc won that bet. Wait’ll he tries to get a needle in her. Something chirped softly from my side, and I pulled my phone from my hip. I had a text.
‘Your friend told me you were out of town, when u get back, want to go out sometime? This is Riley…’
How’d he get my number? I deliberated over it for a moment or so. I shouldn’t, but I couldn’t help myself as I texted a response, against my better judgment.
‘I’d like that. Talk to you soon.’
‘ Hayleigh, your mom’s been hurt. They’re bringing her back to the room, and I want you to just stay out of the way okay baby, cause she’s not going to be too happy.’
