"What can one say about a visionary like Moss Edwards?
Each new year in UGWC has given us competitors who have raised the bar. Standards are set by names like Alan Wallace, Eden Morgan, Donovan Hastings, Travis Roberts--they're all names which are synonymous with setting new standards.
Moss Edwards will be remembered differently. Unsatisfied with simply raising the bar, Moss would take the bar down, twist it out of shape, and hang it crooked on the wall. He'd erase the rising standard, and start a new, completely unheard of standard, just to see where it would take the industry.
The mind of Moss Edwards is an enigma, but we could have asked for no better than he as our inaugural Creative Director, and I'll remind you that it was because of his own choice to resign out of fairness that we now have the idea of a rotating position.
It goes without saying that UGWC is unique. No one person can claim sole responsibility for the endless innovations this company has given the world. But it had to begin somewhere, the groundwork of an environment fertile enough for fresh ideas to grow had to be cultivated. When the benefactors came together and launched a high-risk new promotion, it was Moss Edwards they picked to define the Creative Department, and his influence went beyond his ‘Circle.’ Many conceptual groups and Entertainment Professionals, myself included, have Marshal Harding to thank for setting the stage upon which we’d play.
And so it is my intense pleasure to present to you, 2017 Hall of Fame Inductee, MOSS EDWARDS!!"
The stage goes dark.
Lights begin to pulse along with the opening guitar line of The Go Team’s “Junior Kickstart.” An electricity flows through the crowd as the intro continues and the strobes wash over them.
The first sting of the horn section calls forth a harsh shaft of white light beaming directly down onto the stage. A podium rises out of the stage, the front of the podium comprised by a display case adorned with the GIW.Com Title, a GIW Tag Team Title, the UGWC Cross-Hemisphere Title, and the UGWC World Heavyweight Title.
The final drum roll of the intro leads to the entrance of The Auteur, Moss Edwards, clad in a fine grey suit and blue Nikes. The crowd erupts as he stretches his arms out to them. He stops, snaps his fingers, and laughs as the stage explodes in sparks and pyro around him, followed by a balloon drop worthy of inauguration day.
He approaches the podium and leans over the microphone.
Moss: When you’re in charge of production, you get the cool shit.
He grins as the crowd chants his name.
Moss: Alright, alright, let’s get on with it, I have a show to run this weekend. You guys having a good time at WrestleStock? That’s because of this guy right here.
He laughs as the crowd starts a “Thank you Moss” chant.
Moss: I’ve gotten a reputation over the years as being a being of an egotist and a windbag, people think I love talking about myself and going on and on forever. I don’t know where that came from. I mean, I do like talking about myself, that part is true, I like talking about myself because I’m an awesome subject of conversation and everyone should be talking about me. I’m fascinating.
But the part about me being long-winded is very much false. See, people get confused, they think that because I have had some of the greatest promos in wrestling history that I can just talk forever, but that’s not the case. Go back and watch my hits. They’re all on DVD, just ask anyone who has ever been in the creative department since I left it, I have told them all where they can purchase it. I never gave long speeches, I just gave great speeches and let my work do the rest of the talking.
And seeing as how I am standing here today, with this ring on my finger and you people all wearing nice suits, it looks like that work paid off.
The crowd cheers again.
Moss: With all apologies to my hot and sexy wife, I want to thank my better half, Grace. Without her, I have no idea where I would be. Literally. I would be lost in a forest or a desert somewhere, having missed several appointments. You are my brain, you are my best friend, and you currently have the best legs in Washington, D.C.
Wolf whistles and cheers for Miss Harding as she appears on the screen shaking her head and mouthing “Second best.”
Moss: And the rest of my creative team. Colin, Patience, Charity. I got to watch you all grow and develop and now you’re all leading the industry into the future in your own ways, and I couldn’t be prouder of you all. Of course, I’ve been lucky to share the ring with some of the best in the industry. And Grace helpfully gave me this list so I can finally say all of your names right.
The boys in the audience get a good laugh from that.
Moss: Travis Roberts, the feud that might have been. I wouldn’t be here if you hadn’t grown GIW to what it was, but don’t let that go to your head, I don’t want to be held responsible for you thinking you’re a big deal all of a sudden. Donovan Hastings, I don’t know how you’ve been going at this for as long as you have, but your consistency and hard work also built this company that I have benefited from being a part of. I want to break the kayfabe here. Donovan Hastings is not a fool, he is probably the smartest man in this room tonight. I mean, tomorrow he’ll go back to signing checks with crayon and bringing home stray animals, but he’s smart tonight. Jet Somers, I couldn’t be happier than to have had my last match against you, and especially to have beaten you in it. No one else took what I was trying to do with promos and ran with it like you did, I can’t wait to see you up here getting the credit you deserve for that someday. And to my greatest rivals, Ezekiel Pax and Randy Boolzian: Suck it, I won again.
The crowd cheers for a rare sighting of Pax in the crowd, playfully flipping off the camera.
Moss: And circling back to my beautiful girls. Rochelle and Greta. Through the ups and downs, finding my way home to you was the thing that kept me fighting, and the thing that helped me find peace away from the ring. To all you good brothers and sisters out there, remember this. Someday, you won’t be able to lace those boots up anymore. Make sure you have someone who is still going to cheer for you once you take them off. Finally, a quick thank you to all of you out there in the crowd. Since day one I have called you my target demographic, and that’s because everything I have ever done has been for you. I may not have won the most matches or had the longest career. But I think I gave you the most feelings. And I guess that counts for something. Thank you for the opportunity to entertain you, thank you for the honor of standing before you today, and thank you for all the money you’re going to spend on my merchandise this weekend, I love you all!
Roxy and Greta come out onto stage to hug Moss as the crowd gives him a standing ovation and the Hall of Fame ceremony comes to a close.
