Right, I was thinking of doing something to mark the end of the year, and I decided I didn’t really want to do anything particularly original, or brain taxing, so I’ve decided I wanted to just share some thoughts with you all, about many of the long term players here, and some others. Hell you might not care, but Horizons marks the end of a long year with me in sole care of this institution, and we’ve had our ups and downs, and it just seems therapeutic to just get some of that down on paper. There is no particular order to the following stuff, just as and when it pops into my head.
2009 for Me I took over GIW when P decided he’d spent enough time writing pretty much entire shows on his lonesome, and they were big shoes to fill. Now I know some people had some run ins with P, and personalities clashed, but one thing no-one can take away from him was his dedication to GIW. He never posted late, he wrote 90% of GIW’s matches for 2008, and he spent a lot of time making shows fresh and unique. Without P there would have been no GIW for me to run.
It was a bumpy start, I missed some segments, caused members to ‘take a break’ because of it, but I eventually got into the swing of it, with help from a fair few of you, who will be mentioned later on. It hasn’t always been a joy, the responsibility on my shoulder has been resented many many times during the year, but I can sit here today and say I’m happy with everything we have achieved over the year, at points it didn’t look like we’d make it this far, but Horizons was a great success, especially considering the time of year, and made the whole year worth it. Anyway a bit on a few of you.
’The Cyclone’ JK I don’t know why I’ve started with JK, but there is no thought process to this, but I think everyone would agree we’ve seen this dude really grow as a writer over the past year. I’d like to say thanks to JK for his loyalty throughout the year, and say he’s almost the perfect roleplayer from an owners standpoint. Even when things weren’t going well for his character he just kept going, and in the end was rewarded with a much deserved title run. Sure JK has missed some shows, but very few people here can claim not to, but he always comes back, always lets me know whats going on in his life, and just keeps improving.
Donovan Hastings (Steve) At the start of the year I knew little of the man who would become GIW’s Lord Chief Nigga, and ultimately Unified Global Champion. He was an enigma to many, especially myself, but his work was so frustrating. Here I was, week in, week out, writing thousands upon thousands of words to make a decent post, and this dude stroll’s up, slaps out 600 words of genius, tips his hat and disappears again till next week. I was convinced Donny was actually an evil Mastermind, in the proud traditions of Bond villains, and would just switch on his computer for 20 minutes to toy with us mere peon’s, before planning an elaborate plan to plunge the world into recession...
I was wrong, his name was Steve, and in all fairness, no future Global Dictator is named Steve. But over the year I gained a friendship with Steve that I know will probably outlast this place. Many a night I have had two matches to write, and haven’t felt like doing them, and Steve has always urged me on over IM, never blocked my incessant whining, always listened to my moans, and usually abated and took a match for me.
Conversing with Steve has also helped me find inspiration, and also helped me recognise when something was a bad, bad idea. He’s also been a great sounding board over difficult decisions and boring ones too. On many an occasion it has been Steve that has stopped me from just posting a message saying ’I quit’, so yeah, a big thanks for that.
Because of Steve help over the year, and because he said yes, Steve will be one of three new board admins in the new year, and these guys will be a huge help to me, more details on the roles will become clear over the next few weeks.
KvK (Wayne OK before this becomes a little too homo, I thought I’d change tack and speak about Wayne. Now many of you guys have known him longer and know him better than I, but have any of you EVER met anyone more frustrating...
Oh well, yeah there is Hiro....and Mickey D....
All three guys frustrate in the same way, full of immense idea’s, great writers, but very prone to going AWOL. But that’s the thing about Wayne, he goes AWOL, but never leaves! You can always expect a smart comment to some feedz, but the RP’s are generally a shock when they appear. Has he always been like this, or is it something we’re feeding him?
In all seriousness though, I hope next year we’ll see more of KvK than we do at the moment, I’m sure we’ll see the same amount of Wayne though...
BoolZ (Pall) When this dude took a leave of absence, I honestly thought GIW was on the brink of collapse, he really does epitomise this place a great deal. Three of my proudest moments in my history of this game have involved defeating BoolZ, because I honestly expected to lose every single one of them. You’ve woven a brilliant character into the fabric of this place, and he has such a rich, fleshed out history that I’m so glad your back. I have to say you’re one of the guys here that I think everyone is happy to be in a programme to, and to lose to. I’m glad you got back in time to be at Horizons, because enough people were missing without BoolZ not being present, and looking forward to what you have planned in 2010.
MossI feel so bad, I’ve forgotten your real name. I blame to weed. Anyway, you joined at the start of the year and blew everyone away with your ability to change format and style each and every week, and I think it’s immense that you were able to do credit to such a mixed style for an entire year. Your help on shows has been hugely appreciated, and fruitful, with some awesome matches coming from you, most recently Jet Somers vs Raenius which was a definite highlight of Horizons.
Your uniqueness and humour has made GIW a better fed, and it’s seriously gonna be missed by everyone here, I can assure you of that. I will echo the sentiments of many others when I say I hope to see you back one day, you’ll always be welcome (and will have a set feud with a certain Randall to jump right into). Good luck in your future endeavours dude, and once again thanks for everything this year.
War & Peace (Bryan)Yeah this one goes out to our very own man on the frontline, the FIRST ever GIW tag Team Champion. You’ve been missed since you left, and I think everyone here wants you to hurry up and get back, we don’t like the idea of live ammunition near one of our own. Obviosuly you’ve had one hell of a year, but you keep coming back to us, and I can’t wait to see you back on the boards, with a scorched Ezekiel, and hopefully a resurgent Marek, when your tour ends.
A-Kis (Matt) Dude, you’ve been a major help throughout the year, writing an entire show when I went AWOL, posting another and writing a large amount of it, not to mention taking on a hell of a lot from week to week. You work for GIW as if I paid you for it, but purely for the joy of it, you’re always willing to write, and I know you scan sometimes find it as painful as I, yet your desire for GIW to succeed always produces outstanding work. You only need look at the Main Events you have written this year, especially the insanely good Battlegrounds Match.
Also this year your writing has grown so much, I’m engrossed by Alex’s story, something I couldn’t say in 2008, I enjoyed it then, but now I actually look forward to your next post with anticipation, it’s been real fun watching A-Kis get Kidnapped, seduced and team up with a Penguin, all in the space of 12 months.
Like Steve (Donny) Matt has always been around for inspiration and as a sounding board, and he is also going to be an admin next year.
Raenius (R!) Everyone’s favourite drunken Irishman, this dudes promo’s, despite their distaste for mentioning opponents sometimes, always, without fail, make me feel like a complete dumbass. I’ll be the first to admit I don’t always think they “win” matches, due to the aforementioned distaste, but without fail, whether long or short, they always make me think what I’ve written is....well...poo.
Also he’s helped keep this place together in a different way, half of you guys almost walked out when a few people got hot headed, and R! (along with Ad) kept a cool head to speak with me and sort things out. We could ahve been much smaller in numbers than we are now.
Also in recent months R! Has been another source of inspiration and a sounding board, and guess what? He is the third and final of the three new admins for next year.
Dirge (Ad) I’ve always been a fan of Ad’s, because there are few people around nowadays that enjoy the art of Trash Talking, and Ad can take it to levels never imagined. Apart from that he is incredibly committed, I shouldn’t have to remind people that Ad put his character into a Coma when he thought he’d have no net connection, for storyline and continuity purposes (rather than just disappearing). When he found he actually could get on line, what ddi he do? Kept his character off cards, but continued to post each week, when there was nothing to win, that’s someone who is dedicated and enjoys what they’re doing. And it really mad eme feel this place was worth continuing.
Jez/Malise (Brit) We’ve got to know each other fairly well over the also few months, and when life allows you to post I am always blown away, I truly enjoy everything you write. I also have to thank you for the segments you have contributed to shows, as on many occasions they have ‘made’ the shows if you were.
Salem/CaRNiVaL (Danny) I don’t know you as well as your other half, but I hope in 2010 that is rectified. I enjoy your work, and like the dark humour you inject into it. You definitely have one of the craziest minds here, and thats saying something, especially from a guy who had a cigar smoking, gun toting Penguin as fed head for a large chunk of the year.
Chassie Fear (Tailz)I haven’t met many nicer people in over a decade in this game, every time you contact me you always, always enquire into how life is going for me, which is a rarity and always appreciated. You have also had one hell of a year, with many highs and lows, almost like a parallel to this place. But despite everything you always try, and if you can’t get on you always hold your hand up and explain. I’m a big fan of yours, as I think you know, and really hope you have a bit more time to be around next year, because I really think you’ll achieve a lot more here.
Brandon Brown Good Job.
Nah, thats not it. I’m glad ya came back, like BoolZ you epitomize this place, and always inject a huge dose of surrealism into our lives on a weekly basis. I’ve got big plan for you next year, so I’m looking forward to season 3 of the Brandon Brown Show!
Jet (Brandon) You haven’t been around that long, but one thing I do really appreciate is your honesty. If you don’t like something you say. But with that you always take on board an explanation without moaning or making an argument, and I really think your involvement in the fed is gonna help us grow and move on. Not to mention you are yet another fine writer, damn there’s a lot of you guys now.
Crimson/Komo/Aragato/Chinatsu (Hiro) Dude, I really, really hope things in real life are more stabilised for you in 2010, mainly for you, but also for GIW. When you are consistent and on form you are close to unstoppable, the idea’s flow through your head so quick I kinda think you could be in a fed with 2 other people and it’s be 30 thick in characters and have numerous storylines, if you had the time, and didn’t get distracted. By damn video’s on youtube. And other random links. That I don’t want you to IM me anymore. I never click on them. Sorry if that hurts, but it’s true.
Exile, Timza, Tony Lindsey I shall from now on call you the stragglers. Nah, in seriousness I haven’t got to know you guys as well as I’d like, either due to length of time here or my general laziness. Hopefully over 2010 I’ll get to know you all some more, and hopefully you’ll enjoy a full year with us, trust me it can be interesting.
Ok that’s it, I’m sorry if I missed anyone, but I think I got most of the regulars. But I just wanna say one last thank you to you all, I’ve said it before I don’t do this for my own enjoyment, I do it for you guys. And in honesty the whole year has been worthwhile, and that’s because you’ve all contributed to it. Thanks for that, it means I haven’t quite wasted hours and hours of my life.
Thanks,
Rob
