The scene opens once again to Room 13. Ezekiel is lying there, motionless. No different than usual. Some sick soul has turned on the television, possibly thinking Ezekiel would enjoy it even though he is still drugged to help ease the pain. The TV is set onto a local channel and you can hear a televangelist preaching to his audience. He tells them that he is the way to God and goes off into a tirade of why they should give financial offerings to the church. While the tirade is happening, we see a slight movement come from Ezekiel. His head slightly raises for moment before slowly lowering back to his pillow. The door opens and in walks Dr. Mavetti, clipboard in hand. He slides a chair to the bedside and takes off his glasses as he sits down. He scoffs at the television before turning it off with the remote.
“Hello there, my boy.” The doctor says as he sets the clipboard on a shelf to his right. “Just coming in to do my hourly check up. Make sure that pesky girl hasn’t found her way back in here. We made a deal. I will call her when her after your important visitor comes and that way they don’t cross paths. I’m sure it wouldn’t go well.” The doctor pats Ezekiel’s hand. “The time will come where we will seek our vengeance. You just worry about healing right now.” The doctor puts back on his glasses, grabs the clipboard and heads toward the door. As he grips the door knob he turns back towards Ezekiel. “Stay away from the dark, Mr. Pax. The Family can’t help you if you go to the dark.” Dr. Mavetti then exits the room as the scene fades.
An undisclosed time has gone by. Is it hours, or is it the next day. Who know? What we do know is that we are once again graced by the presence of Dr. Mavetti entering room Room 13. He doesn’t sit down like he did before. He simply stands near the door.
“Ezekiel, my boy. Your visitors are here.” Dr. Mavetti steps out of the way of the door and holds it open as 2 men in suits enter, followed by Anthony Bryan, Xavier’s father. After he enters, the two men that entered before him step back and then exit the room. Anthony stands, looking at Ezekiel, a solemn expression on his face.
“Can he hear me, Ian?” Anthony says, his words obviously meant for Dr. Mavetti, even though he isn’t looking at him.
“Yes.” the doctor replied as he started to close the door. “He feels no pain but he can hear and will retain anything said to him while under the influence of the anesthetic.”
“Good. Go ahead outside, Ian. Give me a moment with the boy.” Anthony managed to get the words out before the door closed. Dr. Mavetti politely nods and then exits the room, gently closing the door behind him. He doesn’t sit in the chair like the past visitors have. He stands there, hands clasped in front of him, looking at the poor soul who did his best to rescue his son. His weathered face seems to be holding back his true expression as he exhales and then addresses his stepson.
“We’ve had quite the go-around, haven’t we kid. Me and you never really got along. Never clicked. You and Xavier always got along well. Must of been those funny cigarettes you two always enjoyed so much.” He pauses and exhales deeply again, figuring out what he is going to say. “You’ve been a pain in my butt since the day I moved you and your mother into my home but it’s been worth it, kid. I blamed you for my boy being kidnapped by those freaks of nature and even when we argued, you still did your best to bring him home. I thank you for that.”
Anthony pauses again and decided to sit down in the chair. He places his hands in his lap and looks around the room.
“Hopefully we’ll get you moved out here, kid. A member of The Family deserves better scenery, ya know. You did me a big favor making sure my boy stayed alive and I owe you for that. I know I made things difficult and I apologize for that. I plan on repaying you in full. What happened to you was awful and what happened to my son was awful and both times those freaks were involved. The Covenant is their name, right? Sounds like some type of religious nutjobs. What do they know about religion? What do they know about loyalty? Trust me, kid. The Family will teach them what is necessary.”
Anthony pauses again, obviously getting a bit flustered. He stands up and grips Ezekiel’s hand gently and gets down on one knee. He bows his head and then whispers something.
“When I quest my flashing sword and my hand takes hold of judgement, I will take vengance upon thine enemies and I will have paid those who haze me, Oh Lord raise me to thy right hand and count me among thy saints.”
Anthony gets back to his feet and pats Ezekiel’s hand. He takes a step from the bed.
“I am sure my son is doing his best to find your friend.” he says, solemnly. “In due time, things just can’t be hidden any longer and we will take down our enemies, Ezekiel. No one will be safe from the hidden. See you again soon, kid.”
The door opens slowly and Dr. Mavetti walks in.
“He’s all yours now, Ian. Keep an eye on him and that stupid little girl.”
Dr. Mavetti nods as Anthony leaves the room. He closes and turns towards Ezekiel as the scene fades.
