Daniel Corvin sat in his locker room. He was alone in the barely lit room staring at the floor between his feet. The sounds of the crowd winding down and leaving the theatre. His hands were clenched into fists and his shoulders started to shake. A growl slowly starts to form deep in his chest. It seems to grow as the sounds from the leaving fans dies down.
The growl finally escapes from him in a guttural, primal roar. He stands up and heaves the chair he was sitting in against the wall. He throws anything he can as he rages across his locker room. His rage at losing the HPW Title is taken out on every inanimate object he can find. He stands in the middle of the debris field he created panting from the exertion.
“It’s time to dig down and let the world see the true beast that sleeps inside of every Corvin...”
Present Day
Daniel Corvin racked the weights and sat up with a sigh. He hadn’t been in a wrestling match in almost a year. He had kept in shape in his downtime. It was half to stay ready to return to the ring given the right opportunity and half habit of working out a lot.
He was back in Los Angeles after his short move down to San Diego. It was only a couple weeks after he moved down, at the request of his then-girlfriend Brittany Kane. It was a relationship set up through friends of friends. It was a fun few months, that’s for sure. But it’s the nature of the world that relationships sometimes end. Nothing to do but move on and keep focused on the end goal.
Getting back into the ring.
So here he was, working out in his family’s gym/wrestling school, waiting for Chris Collins to show up for an on-camera interview for the new promotion he had signed to, UGWC. He was contacted to join them starting a new brand. The shows were spread out farther apart than a normal touring schedule. He always had the option to sign over to the other brand should he want a full time gig.
But he was happy to ease back into things. It had been almost six months since his father, Ashe Corvin, had received a career-ending injury at the hands of a former student and a semi-family member. Daniel and his Uncle Eric had been helping out with his rehab and recovery. Things were better but not back to ‘normal.’ Ashe could move around pretty much without issue. He had to use a cane more often than not still, but he wasn’t in a neck brace anymore.
Daniel didn’t even want to do this interview but contracts being what they are and all, he had to do it. It was days before his debut for the company and they needed sound bites and video of him. The start of a new brand was always surrounded by buzz and excitement. They wanted to live up to it all so they needed their stars to promote it as much as possible. So he agreed to it. He did think it was odd that Collins asked if his father would be there. That wasn’t really an option and there was no real reason for him to be. Sure his dad had acted as his manager when he first started. But now, it was time for him to get out on his own.
Collins had told him that he would be speaking with his opponent, Kenzi Grey, earlier in the day. Which was fine with Daniel. That let him have some time not only for a small workout but to also make sure everything with the training part of the company was running smoothly. Something he has done since his father’s injury. Daniel stood up and grabbed a bottle of water and took a long drink from it. He then headed towards the showers to get cleaned up and ready for his interview.
April 25th, 2018
Daniel Corvin opened up the Skype app on his phone and held it so his face was in view of the camera. He then selected the contact he wanted and waited for them to answer. After a few ‘rings’ of the Skype app, the call was answered. He grins and gave a little wave. “Heya Mary.”
“Hey, Daniel!”
“Tough loss Monday. How you doing?”
“Yeah but it happens so no worries here you know that. I'm good, just helping take care of my girlfriend. Speaking of which, sorry things didn’t work out with you and Britt.”
“Eh, don’t worry about it.” He shrugs and smirks waving a hand. “It was fun while it lasted. I knew it wasn’t gonna be anything long term. She just wasn’t in the mindset for anything long term.” He rubs the back of his neck with his free hand. “I actually have some stuff to ask you about a teammate of yours.”
“Oh?” She raises a brow in curiosity. “Who?”
“Kenzi Grey-Lacklan. Have a cage match against her Monday.”
“Oh wow. That’s awesome. Yeah, I can tell you anything you want to know. Not gonna be much help with in-ring stuff. We have only worked together in the LFL and stuff. What with my exclusive contract and all.”
“That’s fine. I have hours of tape for that part. I need to know about HER. I need to know what makes her tick. What she loves, hates, fears. You know, anything I can use to get that advantage.”
“Jeez, Danny. I dunno. That could ruin my friendship with her and stuff. You know with all of the stuff I’ve gone through that I have lost countless friends.”
“Yeah, but weren’t you griping about how she kept on and on about your relationship and stuff?”
“Well, Yeah. But I mean, that was just some huge misunderstanding and stuff. She was locked and set in her beliefs and thought I should be doing what she thought was right. WIthout thought about my beliefs and stuff.”
“That’s my point! She claims to be some caring and loving friend and she did that shit? She is more like her fucked up mother than she wants to admit.”
“Hey now, that’s not fair! Sid is a raging cunt, Kenzi is nowhere near that bad. She is just in deep with her ‘religion’ and thinks everyone should believe like she does.”
“Yeah, that’s what cults do to their members. It’s brainwashing. I don’t even know why you are aligned with her and that other cultist bimbo.”
“Yeah. I keep hearing that a lot. Ya know what, give me a day to think things over. Shoot me a text tomorrow and I’ll let you know if I’ll help you the way you want.”
“That’s all I could ask for Mary. Thanks. Hopefully I’ll talk to you tomorrow. If not, good luck on Friday and enjoy your vacation after.”
“Thanks, Danny. I’ll get a hold of you tomorrow.” They both waved at each other and Daniel ended the call.
Present Day
Chris Collins exited his uber in front of The Crow’s Nest Training Facility. He fought to hold back his excitement at being able to get to see the inside Ashe Corvin’s training facility. He looked up at the sign and smiled. He opened the door and stepped inside. It was laid out like a typical gym and training center. There were weight bags and exercise equipment set on one side while the other was taken up by a wrestling ring.
The camera crew had gotten there earlier and set up. They had a pair of chairs sat in front of a UGWC Chill backdrop. Collins walks over and sets his bag on the table that holds the microphones and other technical gear. He pulls out his tablet and brings up all the info he feels he needs to make this interview the best it could be.
This was the one he was looking forward to this interview all day. He was upset that the great Ashe Corvin wouldn’t be there but understand why. With Daniel on the roster, it was only a matter of time before he got the chance to meet the wrestling legend. He walked over to a group of photos on the wall. Most of Ashe during and after major matches from his career. There are also others of Daniel from the start of his career and ECWF Extreme Champion Sativa Nevaeh, a student of Corvin’s.
“Chris Collins, I presume?.”
The voice of Daniel Corvin startles Collins causing him to jump slightly. He turns around with a nod and holds his hand out. “Yes. And you are Daniel Corvin. Pleasure to meet you.” Daniel takes his hand and gives it a very firm shake. He towers over the smaller Collins with a devilish grin.
“I assume you are very busy getting ready for your debut match for Chill. So would you like to get started?”
“I would love to.” Daniel and Chris make their way over to the chairs and take a seat. The camera crew attaches the mics and get everything set. They nod to the two men that everything is ready and they can start whenever.
“Ladies and gentlemen I am Chris Collins, and I am here with newest UGWC member Daniel Corvin. Corvin, as you all know, is the son of the great Ashe Corvin. Ashe made his name in the late nineties and early two thousands by being a dominant force inside the wrestling ring. He won many championships throughout his career. Now, after taking almost a year off his son returns to the ring and doing it in UGWC on their newest show, Chill. Thank you for your time, Mr. Corvin.”
“Yeah, not like I’m required to do this or anything. So, why don’t you start your questions?”
“Well, um, alright.” Collins taps on his tablet for a second bringing up the information he needed. “First off, your new nickname is the Blade of Damocles. Which is a play on the name you have for one of your moves. Why did you switch from Prince of Darkness?” Daniel rolls his eyes and shakes his head.
“It was time for a change. I used Prince of Darkness because of the recognition it would help garner. My father called himself the King of Darkness. So I went with mine to show the lineage. But I have had my own success. I have made my own name. So like anyone moving towards their future, I made a change.”
“Now, we have seen the banter on social media between you and your opponent's mother and manager Sidney Grey. Would you like to give any more information or insight on your words?”
“What else is there to say? She wanted the match canceled because she is a manipulative bitch. She only cares what she can get out of her daughter's success. She would rather her daughter sit pretty in Hollywood in front of a camera twenty-four seven. There is more money to be made easier in acting. She would be living the high life off of her daughter’s financial teat.”
“That might be true. But you did threaten to, and I quote, ‘I can make sure she goes back into retirement and maybe even get a wheelchair to match her wife’s.’ Why the harsh words?”
“Are you serious?” Daniel scoffs. “Sid is so worried that her daughter might get hurt wrestling. That she might not be able to act is some trash ass direct to DVD movie put out by some half-assed production company. I said what I said because it’s true. This sport is dangerous. This sport can, as has, ended not only careers but lives. She underestimates Kenzi. She fails to remember that Kenzi was in a multi-person ladder match to win a title before she retired. That only proves that Kenzi can handle this match and any dangers it’s might have.”
“Alright, let's change gears for a moment. You have said you watched tape on her. Do you feel that you are prepared for this match? Have you had any special insight from your and Kenzi’s mutual friend Sativa Nevaeh?”
“I have been watching tape of Kenzi. Any wrestler worth half a damn would do their research before going into a match. But this is wrestling Collins, and you of all people should know what that means. I could watch every match of Kenzi’s until I had every single one memorized and I still would never be one hundred percent ready. She wanted to come back for a reason. I don’t know what that reason is, no one does. Well, her wife might but she hasn’t been in front of a camera hardly since her accident.” Daniel shrugs. “And I’ll be honest I did call Sativa after I found out that I was booked against Kenzi. She and I had a long talk. What that was isn’t really your, or anyone else’s, business. I’ve know Sativa longer than Kenzi. I’ve trained with her. I’ve been in the right against her twice. I’m surprised Kenzi never called her to find out about me.”
“How do you know she hasn’t?”
“She might have. But there has been a few calls between Sativa and myself. And she hasn’t mentioned any type of call from Kenzi. But our calls were about a week ago. So for all, I know Kenzi might have since then. I know they are teammates in the LFL. I know they are both part of the ‘Cool Kids.’ It doesn’t matter though. I could be fucking Kenzi’s live in hobo, which for the record is so not my type, and it wouldn’t matter. Wrestling is in my blood and I am confident in my abilities. I am a former World level champion. A title I won in less than a year in the business. Hell, it was just over a month before I won that title. A MONTH after my debut. Has Kenzi done anything like that?”
“Well, she does have more title reigns than you do.”
“That doesn’t answer my question, Chris.”
“Well, no, she hasn’t done anything like that.”
“There you go. I was in HPW and CWC for three months. I won their top title in just over thirty days. Kenzi is nothing but a glorified actress trying to impress a washed up cripple.”
“You brought up the #CoolKids. Despite this being a cage match, are you worried they might try and interfere? That they might try and attack you before the match?”
Corvin laughs. “They can try. Who among them would even think twice about trying to attack me? The stereotypical Southern California bimbo and her manish bodyguard? Or maybe the naive talk blonde? Oh, maybe they can drag their socially awkward ‘friend’ out of the bottle long enough to earn her keep. Send them all and I will send them all back to their locker room to lick each other's wounds along with whatever else that coven of dykes lick.”
“Those are awfully strong words, Daniel. But you aren’t the only one to have some. I was just at an interview with Ms. Grey and she had some words for you. I’d like to get your thoughts on them if I could.” Collins pulls up some of the video from his interview with Kenzi earlier in the day. He hands the tablet over to Daniel to let him watch a clip. “So, what are your thoughts on those words?”
“Well, that was interesting.” He takes a deep breath and exhales through his nostrils rubbing his chin. “I know you want something from me that would be scathing and in line with this business. And I could go on at length about what she said. But why waste the effort? I know the worst thing I could say to her. I know that my words to her mother have already gotten under her skin. She might try and deny it. She can sit and say she isn’t worried. But I’m already in her head and under her skin. It’s a trait I learned and inherited from my father. I see a chink in the armor and I aim for it. She didn’t like that I spoke ill of her to her mother. Well, maybe if she could keep her mother on a fucking leash I wouldn’t have had to. I said what I did about her cripple wife and got the reaction I wanted. It got into her head. She turned and threatened to do to me what I did to her. She might try and take some holier than thou attitude because of the cult she is part of. But at the end of the day, she is nothing more than one simple thing.”
“And what’s that?”
“She is her mother’s daughter.” Daniel grins and pulls the mic off of his shirt and walks away before the cameras stop rolling.
